BMW Z3 M Roadster (1998 - 2002) Convertibles

BMW Z3 M Roadster (1998 - 2002) Convertibles

DESCRIPTION

(1998 - 2002) The Z3 was the first BMW roadster to be sold in America since the legendary 507 was discontinued in 1959. While the Z3's retro styling has the feel of classic roadsters, the car is thoroughly modern, foregoing no creature comfort or ergonomic consideration. In 1998, BMW's M motorsports division added the Z3 to its collection of high-performance M models with the addition of the M Roadster. Equipped with a tuned down version of the engine found in the powerful new M3 and styling befitting of an M car, the lightweight M Roadster reaches 60 mph in just five seconds.

Strength:

315 horses Only a handful of faster convertibles (such as the Ferrari and the MB SLK32) Much cheaper than either car mentioned above! The car looks great

Weakness:

No Xenon No glass rear window No auto temp control No keyless entry

The car is very fast. I''m still breaking it in, but it''s still very fun to drive. It took only one test drive to convince me to buy it. It''s missing a few things I expected from a car in this price range, but it has everything you need.

Strength:

315Bhp, brakes, interior, fit & finish.

Weakness:

Brakes overly senisitive, no tilt on steering wheel.

Wow! This thing is a high-speed projectile for the perfectionist in a terrible hurry. My C5 vette was a joke compared to this thing. This is a sports car, the vette was just a GT. I have not been kept on my toes like this since I drove a 427 Cobra replica. Not for beginners (it will bite). It’s simple; I either shake or smile for hours after driving this animal.

Great Performance car, a TRUE spots car not a muscle car. Responsive, fast, handeling, everything a dream sports car should be.

Weakness:

Stupid people think its a Z3. Seatbelts

This is a 100% true sports car. These days, people confuse muscle cars, luxury cars, etc with sports cars. However, the M-roadster is a true sports car, the Viper is a muscle car, the mustang is a muscle car, the firebird is a muslce car. THE ROADSTER is a sports car. This mean high performance in all areas. Its fast, corner like a cat, fun to drive, its basically a street legal ROCKET! In first gear it seem like a normal BMW but just wait until you put it in second gear and floor it. You will be throw back so fast into your seat as if you were shot out of a cannon. Its that responsive! Its like a Porsche 911 for half the price and twice the sports car. (Posche 911 is borning to drive. Too soft)

Strength:

Classic BMW design. There is nothing generic about this vehicle and there is no mistaking it for anything else on the road. It is nearly ready to race out of the box.

Weakness:

For all the styling, the M uses too much plastic in the interior. The armrest is pitiful as is the use of ''chromed'' plastic. I''d rather see more leather, wood or chrome on the interior. As fast as it is, I felt it needed that extra punch from a full Dinan performance upgrade. Was that the best choice? Hard to say, but it makes me happy.

This car is one great toy! Solid handling and acceleration. Once I am behind the wheel and fire up the engine, I am in another world. I have no idea why BMW even bothered putting a radio or CD player in it. The only thing I want to hear is the whine of the engine and the shifting of the gears while it presses me into the seat. This car is NOT a daily driver. If that is what you are looking for, then shop the 3 series.

Too many to list.

Weakness:

The Sound System is junk, if that is a weakness. Easily upgraded.

I don''t know where to start. This car is excellent. I have the stainless exhaust, software download, air intake, lowered, upgraded eibach suspension etc. etc. A couple extra grand will turn this car into a monster roadster. Handling. Flawless. Power. Smooth. Torque. Always there no matter what gear you are in. I highly recommend the M Roadster. After a few aftermarket upgrades, this thing is a MONSTER. I can''t wait for the Dinan Supercharger. Wow!

Fast and smooth with that great German engineering. This car rocks in the wide open spaces of the west.

Weakness:

Yeah, yeah, the trunk is small and seat could recline a little more - so go buy a chrysler and leave the serious driving to us!

Awesome, Awesome, Awesome.
Classy, powerful, refined.
Cool retro look meets state of the art driver's car!
I love the sound of my Roadster so much I even turn down Stevie Ray!

Strength:

Putting 315 hp into a car this small borders on the absurd, but makes for an incredible drive. Don't know why I bothered to get the CD changer, I haven't listened to anything other than the engine sounds since I got it. Acceleration is great, torque is downright excessive. Top down is fast and simple. Addition of temperature gauge, tire pressure sensors, etc. puts the amenities up where they belong for the price range.

Weakness:

Ridiculously small trunk space. Notable cowl shake. Handling is very good but my 95 M3 was stiffer and felt more direct, the Roadster feels slightly more damped and rubbery as a consequence. Tonneau cover is difficult to place.

Overall, the best purchase in the category in spite of increased cost relative to the 2000 model. Not recommended for folks who just want to cruise around and don't care about the performance, this car is almost brutish and rough compared to "normal" BMW products, even other M cars. For the performance enthusiast, an excellent choice. Also a very practical alternative to waiting 1-3 years in line for a 2001 M3.

Similar Products Used:

Tested the S2000, 320 SLK, Audi TT, Porsche Boxster. The S2000 is fun and looks good but lacks the torque of the BMW. The SLK is a luxocrusier, not a sports car, but for the strictly top down, non-performance crowd a very solid and beautifully made choice. The Audi is really handicapped by an anemic engine, otherwise a nice car. The Boxster is cramped, sold by arrogant buffoons, more expensive and not as fast. The only thing it does well is handle and its not better than the roadster even at that.

Strength:

Art in motion! Powerful, agile, and just plain fun!. BMW quality and reliability. Affordable!

Weakness:

Somewhat limited trunk space, no outside temp guage (but I hear the 2001 has one! Thanks BMW!), no spare (but the Z3 has one, and the new 2001 with 225hp is fun to drive too).

Addicting: The first time driving the Roadster I left work for six months because I could not get enough of it... no kidding! Truly a "man and his machine" experience (But I've seen a number of happy women driving them too!).

I feel its best car I've ever driven in over 25 years on the road, period. Also the best return on investment in units of fun than any other purchase I've made! So much fun in fact that in the last four years I've owned four Roadsters - two Z3's and two M's. I've tried to find other convertables I like, but have returned to BMW each time.

When driving one you can quickly appreciate all aspects of the design and engineering. Even parked you never get tired of looking at its elegant form.

I've driven these Roadsters all the way down to Central America four times. With a total of over 100,000 miles of Roadster driving experience I've come to trust the quality so much that on my last trip I drove all the way from Spartanburg SC to the Panama Canal (and them some). No problems - just 12,000 miles of confident performance! But watch out for those Costa Rica potholes in the M (no spare tire).

After driving over 10,000 miles I compared mine to a Boxster... and could not wait to get back to my Roadster. I've shopped a lot for convertables, the BMW just feels more advanced, and seems to be better quality all around.
