BMW Z3 M Roadster (1998 - 2002) Convertibles

BMW Z3 M Roadster (1998 - 2002) Convertibles

DESCRIPTION

(1998 - 2002) The Z3 was the first BMW roadster to be sold in America since the legendary 507 was discontinued in 1959. While the Z3's retro styling has the feel of classic roadsters, the car is thoroughly modern, foregoing no creature comfort or ergonomic consideration. In 1998, BMW's M motorsports division added the Z3 to its collection of high-performance M models with the addition of the M Roadster. Equipped with a tuned down version of the engine found in the powerful new M3 and styling befitting of an M car, the lightweight M Roadster reaches 60 mph in just five seconds.

For the money i paid for it this car is the cats @$$, I drove my father-in-laws s2000 for (4) months while he was on vacation, before I bought it so I have a good feel for the difference. Man is it a big difference it is torque, torque, and one more thing that slips my mind. OH yeah, more torque!!!! I had the opprotunity to race him and (3) car lengths later he was in my rear view mirror. I mess with my freinds when they ask how much I paid. I ask them to guess. I've gotten up to $70,000 responses. This car is the most sports car you could possibly get for your money, it has the entire package looks, comfort, speed, and of course acceleration.

Weakness:

If you purchase a set of winter tires this car has no weaknesses, in my opinion of course.

Strength:

Awesome eyeball. Can't drive this car w/out getting looks, waves, shouts, etc. Beautigful, classy sports car lines. Unbelievable acceleration. Very few cars on the road can hang with the M Roadster off the line or on the highway. Cool, throaty rumble from the dual exhausts.

Weakness:

Horrible in the rain and forget about taking it out of the garage if there is even a prediction of snow in the forecast. Driving in the city is tough, potholes are killer on this car's tires and if you do happen to blow one out, very, very expensive to replace. Absolutely no storage space. Trunk doesn't even have room for a spare tire. When top is up there are blind spots.

Bought the car for my wife because she wanted a convertible. Drove the Z3 2.8 first then drove the M, absolutely no comparison. After driving the M for a block knew that was the car we were getting. I have never owned a car with this much mystique. Driving it is a pleasure. It accelerates like a beast and handles very well (although I'm told the M Coupe handles better due to the stability that a roof adds. While there are some flaws ie blind spots when roof is up, poor handling in inclement weather and no storage space, this car more than makes up for it with pure adrenaline rush. Not practical as an everyday car but it makes one helluva second/ weekend/ nice weather ride.

Porsche Boxster S. Handles great but doesn't have the acceleration or the eyeball that the M Roadster has.

Strength:

Mid-end torque

Weakness:

Difficult and lengthy process to put on the top.
Excess body roll during hard cornering.

It has a good look and a very flexible engine and is a good sporty car for mid life crisis. It has very good normal street driving performance.

For the price/value, it is a little lacking in refinement. The chassis is not very strong and very susceptible to ratlles on rough surface. The suspension has excess body roll during hard cornering. After driving a friend's Porsche Boxster-S, I realize that the M-roadster is definitely lacking the race car "feel".

Overall, it is a decent car but for real convertible sport car. Porsche Boxster S is still the winner.

Engine (torque, torque, torque, eyeball squishing acceleration)
Brakes (eyeball popping brakes)
Suspension (way sticky in the turns)

Weakness:

Build quality (had numerous little things - logos, glove compartment, etc.)
BMW snooty image (people think you are snooty if you have one)
Requires lots of $

This car is just awesome! If you haven't driven one you are missing out on a true pleasure. I think it is as close to an old Vette as you can get (with modern safety stuff). Lots of engine!
Kids wave and say "nice car" all the time.
It is nice to be able to leave most cars behind if necessary. This is not a car for a teenager, I think they would get to know the local police very quickly. I haven't been overly pleased with the build quality. I have had to visit the dealer numerous times (15) in the two years of ownership. Can be very expensive to maintain (tires cost around $1000 set and only last about 18000 miles). I would do it all over again in a minute though.

Miata - both are convertibles, different leagues
Porsche Boxster - BMW has better acceleration and grunt, Porsche has better handling.

1)The power was just right, I previously owned a 1993 vette and wanted something more fun to drive. The vette feels like a tankcompared to this little rocket! It took a while for me to get used to the seating position, I normally recline more than this car will allow, but I am becoming more comfortable with the position and feel that the more upright seating is a good habit to get into. I just love to drive this car. I do wish it had a bit less chasis flex, but it rides great and has much less flex than my old vette, my friend with a boxster commented he would be much happier with this car for long trips. He considers this to be more of a touring set-up from a suspension stand point than his Boxster. the sound of this engine at 6000 RPM is out of this world, but be careful the "M" engine pulls past redline quickly so be sure and SHIFT!

I like how when I mash the gas peddle I suddenly feel like the ruler of a small country or a minor Olympian God. This puppy is as quick as a thought and just about as nimble. It's meant for sultry summer nights and serpentine back roads.
Perhaps best of all is the music it makes when the needle arcs north of 4000 rpm. I think the m stands for Mozart.

Weakness:

Snow.I don't like the stuff. Either does my M. Even with traction control at the ready things get pretty hairy in anything but a dusting of the white stuff. If you're thinking of this as your only transport and you live in...let's say Buffalo, forget it.

$64,000.00 Canadian.
A fully loaded Miata will set you back about $32K.
Is it worth it?
How much to you like to grin your ass off?

240 horse power! This car is fast as hell. Estroil blue color kicks ass. I love everything about this car.

Weakness:

None that I can find.

The M roadster is an awesome car. I have driven a lot of sport cars including a lot being compared to the M. The S2000 is not a bad looking car for a Honda. But, 5-second range 0-60? You might be able to get this, but you will also need a new clutch every few months. Not only do I say this, but Car and Driver also backs that up. The first test of the S2000 had it in the 7-second range. Amazing that a car could drop 0-60 times 2 seconds with out any modifications. Give me a break. The M roadster has always posted 0-60 times of 5-5.2 seconds. That is reliable info. I love the M cars and the roadster is no exception.

trunk space sucks, nothing like the streo in my old car

OK, this is a serios sports car...i really get tierd of these old GOMERS writing reviews about their mid life crisis... I can tell you that this is no Z3..Its an M car with precision, smooth power delivery, and no time ofr BS...I personally have had experience with a boxter also and can tell that they are difficult to comparisons. The M roaster buyer is more serious about performance. My car does 0-60 in 5 Flat witha power chip..and i am told by my dealer that another $10,000 of modifictions will give me 350 horses..aside fron that its a dream...the boxter is very pretty..but the interior (dash) is basically right out of a ford taurus and its really slow..i once raced a 2000 maxima with a boxter and i ashamed to say he kept up the entire quater mile..also once your are done buying the boxter and adding things like a sports package and some fit and finish options you have spent between 55-$60,000. The boxter S is better at performing but the M roadster will have it sucking exhaust fumes i nthe firs second of take off. Hey if you have to have a porche and you have the money but a 911 carera...it at least acts like a real porche
