Strength:

Superb handling, Quattro is a must. Hosrepower is plenitful in all drivetrain selections, interior options fit for a king, and looks that say it all.

Weakness:

Dealership understanding of the vehicles they sell and are supposed to stand behind, and endless electrical issues that leave you wondering, "what are those crazy Germans doing?"

Love the car, fear the dealership. I have been fortunate with my A6, experiencing only minor electrical glitches and few mechanical failures, all with low cost of repair (so far). Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for my wife's A4 (2000 1.8T Sport), as soon as we passed 50K (warranty), the display lights started to fade, gas gauge malfunctioned, hauntingly abnormal tire wear, several charging system issues, headlights constantly burning out, and finally, the turbo blew. Sounded like marbles being swirled around in a coffee can. The car spent more time in the service bay, and my poor wife behind the wheel of a bright yellow cavalier (loaner), than in my garage. The staff at the dealership are always sympathetic, but that quality seems to bring them no closer to getting the problem resolved. It seems to me that there are no immediate fixes with these cars and none are soon on the way. The longest stay at the dealership with the A4 was 11 days!! And that was because the brake pad indicator light was on, and after replacing the brakes, all around (still under warranty, thank God) the techs couldn't get the light to stay off. It is my belief that they simply disconnected it. :) It got to the point where the service manager and I were on a first name basis. I miss the A4 tremendously, I know several people that have never experienced the troubles that I had, the same can be said for the A6, I know several people that have gone through hell with theirs, while I have been lucky. I believe Audi to be unsurpassed in luxury, comfort, handling and horsepower, and I have enjoyed every second behind the wheel of them both, I only wish that they didn't spend as much time as they have in service. After reading several reviews of Audi's product, I feel for the owners of the cars that didn't stand the test of time, and I know the feeling. Solution? Lease. I am fairly certain that while my wife vows to never get behind the wheel of one again (traded the A4 for an SUV, Chevy), I'll own nothing other than a German engineered car for the rest of my driving days.

Solid, polished interior. Solid handling. Great sound system.

Weakness:

Electrical problems. Expensive to repair.

I always wanted to own an Audi and when my Cadillac SLS (great car!) finally started giving me problems at 168,000 miles, I decided to do for it! WHAT A MISTAKE! My car is in for service at least once a month. The cost of maintaining this car is outrageous. Electrical problems are a regular occurrance. In addition to the inconvenient regular visits, the dealer has done a lot of damage to my car and I've had to fight them tooth and nail to get them to make good on the repairs. When I take it in for warranty service, their courtesy vehicles are pickup trucks and Dodge Neons!!! The A6 has, by far, has the most perfect interior of any car I've ever driven and the body design is absolutely beautiful. Beyond that... you'd better have a big bank account and a lot of free time on your hands if you're thinking about owning one of these money pits. I'm headed for the Acura dealer.

This is a white elephant. Spare parts and service prices will dry your wallet

I recieved this car as a payment from some graphic arts machinery built for this person, so it was the car or the wait to get paid. This car is very impressive in terms of equipment for the year of its make. Has a smooth driving and very nice features that really maks you feel in a luxury vehicle. Sadly I had to let it go because of the price of the parts. I had an indicator flashing for the ABS brakes and after getting the car to the shop, the mechanic told me that a fuse in the sensor had a short circuit, that the ABS mechanical parts were OK, but that he had to replace the sensor box, everything in the box because that fuse couldn´t be replaced individually. Price of the box: $2,000. Also there were minor details like the left window would open down but refused to close up and there were some problems with the adjustable seat´s cartridge and overall, the bill went to $5,000... Needless to say, I´m sorry but I had to get rid of it.

Weakness:

Horrible mechanical and electrical product quality spanning several model years. Customer service is non-existent.

I have a 1999 A6. My boss has a 2004 A6 and watches my vehicle like a hawk. The reason: my falls apart. His is falling apart with the same issues. The net/net is that "Audi quality" is an oxymoron. - 4 engine check light failures - 5 gas tank sensor/gauge failures - failing front rotors at 30K - 5 radios - 4 temperature gauges - 3 wire harness failures - 1 ABS control module failures - 1 engine computer failure - 6 injectors replaced - 1 failed thermostat - 5 factory recalls - 2 leaking differential seals - consumes vast quantities of oil It goes on and on. The 2004 has the same gas/temp/engine light failures as well as wire harness failures and premature brake wearout, eats oil, plus multiple light and window failures. What a joy to own...

Model Reviewed: A6 2.8 Quattro w/ Tiptronic

Strength:

Luxury Galore......big bang for ballers on a budget. Quattro is setting the standard for vehicles with and without all-wheel drive systems. And the feel and look of the interior almost makes me more comfy in my car than I am at home (don't tell my wife!!! shhhhhhhh!) and the rearview mirror that turns down automatically so u can see the curb....I dont know who thought of that, but damn good job! Also 22.7 mpg, not bad for a V6.

Weakness:

Getting out the car to change the cds in the trunk is definitely annoying (especially in suspecious areas). The Tires seem so small, and authentic Audi rims are sooooooo booooooring. I dont think the Auto dim feature on the mirrors works, and (from what i hear) this is expensive car for parts. but if u take care of it like u are suppose to and drive the car like u love it, then it not that serious. Also the tires squeal into fast cornering (i definitely gettin some low profiles some time soon) and there is noticable body roll when driving very dynamically (but like i said i own it for the smooth ride not for the sportiness). And the transmission seems to "remember" how u were driving (soft or hard) so if u wer driving soft, it may take a second for the car to adjust to hard driving after u step on the gas (unless of course u have the manual of the tiptronic)

This car is a has been a pure joy for me. i recently replace (i.e, gave my wife) a Toyota Tercel, and for the price i (i mean "we") paid ($14k), I have not a single regret. I have a 70-mile, one-way commute to work, and now (after sitting in 2 hours of traffic) I come home feeling better than ever. This vehicle has been truly therapeutic for me (my wife thinks so, too). Now I love my long commute (I drive almost 1000 miles per week). The look of the dark-blue exterior is very distinguished and classy, but not overly "showy" like a lot of other car in its class. Also, the complimentary beige leather interior with heated seats (winters in NJ are ridiculous sometimes), dual-zone climate control, 12-way adjustable seats w/ power lumbar support are extremely comfy. Cup-holders are everywhere (they cant fit snapple bottles though), and i love the red glowing display. The walnut trim is beautiful, and i love the flip down cover for the radio. The Bose system could be alot better (i cant good a good thump in a song with a heavy bassline). As u can see, I obviously love the car more for the luxury end of the deal as opposed to performance. my favorite feature is the memory seats prgrammed into each of the 2 keys (i'm 5'11" and my wife is 5'2") so it's good to not have to adjust the seating positions all the time. And also, I love the passenger rearview mirror that tilts down so u can see the curb as ur parking (i never knew i needed it before, but now that i have i cant live without it!!). The trunk is big enough to hold a body (i know at the dealership i was so amazed i jumped in it!!!). The lil side storage compartments keep the trunk uncluttered, and the fold-down seat come in really handy. And I LOVE that you can OPEN and CLOSE WINDOWS with the key in the door. As far the ride, SMOOTH... the A6 is like a boat on land. smooths out the rugged potholed filled streets of Camden and Newbrunswick and the Tiptronic semimanual transmission gives a great jump onto the on-ramps of the NJ Turnpike. The engine runs so quiet that when i was at a convience store sittin in the car, the guy parked next to me ask if the car was running cuz i left my lights on (he couldnt even hear it!). and on the highway i do 65mph and it feels like i'm doing 25mph (watch out for speeding tickets, especially takin Rt. 70 to the beach). But what i really like about the car is the QUATTRO all wheel drive. in a torrential down pour i watch other cars doing 45 while i'm still coasting at 75 (watch out for the hydroplaning, especially near the divider). The car is also suprisingly nimble for its size. I dont like to drive fast, but what i love to do is jump in and out of traffic and this car is great for that. I throw the car to manual mode, downshift from 5th to 4th for greater acceleration and the upshift coming back into the lane and I AM GONE... No Problems really so far, the car had 70k miles on when i brought it like 2 months ago and everything is in great condition. I love this vehicle and i love the understaed styling that the Audi delivers (i'm not really a flashy person but i still wanna ride in style!) and this vehicle gives me a perfect blend of luxury and performance. I was serious considering my next car to be an S55 AMG, but i cant imagine owning a car without all-wheel drive. so now i think the next car is gonna be the flagship, the A8L (but i got at least a few years before that purchase (unless i find a reall good deal)). And even when i get the A8L, i still plan on keepin the A6, it will be hooked up by then (19" rims, better sound system, possibly lcd screens in the head rest, and what ever other amenity i can think of, and the A8L will be my "serious car."

Strength:

Great in the snow, the locking differential will get you out of everything. Very reliable. Comfortable. Built like a tank, but can still be nimble when cruising country roads. No matter how dirty, it still looks good after a wash. Understated elegance. Cruises well at 80 mph. Love the heated seats. Good clearance for a sedan. Pearl white paint is Audi’s best paint job.

Weakness:

As with any Euro car, the electrical can be quirky. For instance, sometimes the climate system won't respond when on the road, turning it off and on again seems to fix it. After finding a good German Auto repair-person, I have learned to avoid the dealer and have had great luck. General repairs include brakes, struts, and by choice, replaced timing belt/water pump. The only surprise repairs: cv joint boot, a couple of seals, and a leaking over flow reservoir.

After losing our A8 to a head on car accident, (both passengers survived, but Audi died to save the passengers) we bought a used A6 because we needed quattro, but felt it would be more reliable and better for mileage than our A8. After 3 x-country trips, and numerous state hopping, it has been a great car. It just hit 150,000 and has only been in the shop for normal wear and tear. The pearl paint looks great but she is starting lose some of her luster. After reading reviews, I’m leery of buying a new one because frankly, this one has been wonderful. It is the epitome of precise German engineering.

It is interesting to read that some of your reviews have had bad experiences with their A6's. I'm sorry to hear that. All I can say is that out of all the cars I have owned (and they are numerous, believe me), none come close to the Audi RS6. The build quality is superb and way above that of Porsche / BMW. The 'understated-ness' of it is almost as satisfying as leaving 911's for dust up the M4 highway in England at 145mph plus ! The practicality of the Audi is also second to none. The only issue I have with the RS6 is the price. I am a UK reader, so you guys on the other side of the pond can see how much motoring costs us (USD 104,000). In addition, gas is around USD 5.40 a gallon....'ouch' I hear you say. Anyway, you only live once, so get out there and enjoy it as much as you can!

Strength:

Fantastic interior, quiet, smooth ride, AWD, great corrosion proofing, ample space for 5 folks and great hauling ability (it's a wagon.)

Weakness:

The brakes are a bit squeeky. (Can I get asbestos brake pads out of country? Hell, I'll even install 'em myself- what's a little asbestos dust? It's not like I'm refitting insulation on twelve Liberty Ships!) Also, the orignal rubber mats allowed salty slush water from my shoes to puddle into the carpet. (I replaced them with some German-made mats that will hold a 1/2 gallon of slush!)

I must admit, after reading several negative A6 reviews on this site, even I would be put off from buying my car. That being said, for whatever reason, at 39,000 miles I have had absolutely no problems and the dealer (Carousel Audi) has been exceptional. I have only taken the vehicle in for its free service (20K, 30K, 40K) and they have been helpful and attentive in all aspects. Why did I buy it? 1) The AWD quattro System (great in Minnesota) 2) A 12 YEAR CORROSION WARRANTY 3) The gas mileage, which at 22 mpg is much better than I would get with a similar sized SUV.

Performance, looks, features, and ride.

Weakness:

Reliability could be better. Alot of complaints of electrical issues.

I am going to rate in this car in four categories... Performance - A, this car has great performance I have tiptronic auto and if you just touch the accelerator it jerks forward w/ power (0-60 6.6). Handling is excellent it can take sharp turns at high speeds with alot of control. It doesn't give you that loose/out of control feeling like some cars. AWD quattro has outstanding performance in poor conditions. All around great performance. Looks - A, exterior design is of opinion, but it seems like most people think it looks great. I like the sporty wheels and like the conservative look. The interior is gorgeous w/ many details like wood and metal. Best I have ever seen in any car so far. Very high grade materials. Features - A, all of what other cars have but more. It has CD, cassete, dual climate control, leather, great BOSE audio system, dual power seats etc. Plus AWD Quattro and many electrically controlled things like automatic adjusting mirrors when you start the car etc. So many electrical gadgets. Very high grade. Ride - A, sporty yet comfortable and smooth at the same time. Not a rough ride like a sporty coupe (Mustang) or too smooth and boring (Lincoln Town Car). It is just right, sporty and comfortable at the same time. Reliability - C, haven't had car long enough to experience any problems except one of signal lights has burned out. I am giving it a C b/c the reliability ratings from JD Power and other people is only average. It isn't as reliable as a Honda or similar make etc. The car I bought though has 68,000 miles and it looks new and feels very solid. It runs just as well as it looks. I think this car is a great value used. Still a great value new too.

This is the worse car I have ever owned. The engine works fine, but the electrical system and computer system always fails and is costing me a fortune to fix. I bought this car based on 2 recommendations. One person sold it for a used Honda, the other is now proceeding with the NYS Lemon Law. The car is very nice looking (I think it's much nicer than BMW or Mercedes), but it is terrible. Like the last post, I know the service people at Audi as well...they see me every month.,,until I dump this thing.
