The quality of a Hyundai for the price of an Audi. I have learned to like the Ford Focus often provided as a loaner during my frequent service visits in the first 18K miles of ownership. Model Reviewed: A6 2.7t Sort Quattro

Strength:

Design quality and apearance approaching an art form. More over-all driving safety and versatility than any (city)SUV and more fun to drive than should be allowed by law!

Weakness:

Some wind noise and poor brake design.

If you are a serious driving enthusiast or just serious about safety, quality and value, then look no further than the Audi A6 2.7 T Quattro with Sports Package. The A6 2.7t offers an ideal blend of performance, sex appeal, luxury and name exclusivity. I have 37,000 miles on my A6 and have experienced no major propblems requiring lengthly repairs. The brake rotors are a bit problematic, but the repair efforts solved the problem. Up in the snow, the A6 quattro offers you and your family all the cold weather handeling capability you could ever reasonably expect or need. Plus, say goodby to roof-top ski racks. Simply fold the ski port down from the back seat and your skis fit neatly within the trunk. I spent another $1,000 on the GIAC engine and transmission performance "Chip" and have about 310 horsepower and 358 pound feet of torque at my disposal. Because of the power and supurb handeling and performance of this vehicle, I think I've discovered one of the best kept secrets in the automotive industry. The 2.7t is possibly as close as you or I will ever find in an all-around performance luxury sports sedan.

Strength:

Strengths are the performance of this car. The 2.7T is very quick and it handles well at higher speeds. My children love the heated seats in the rear.

Weakness:

I have had a rattle in the headliner since I owned this car and no dealer yet has been able to repair it. The credit card drawer is currently stuck shut, I put change in it instead of credit cards. I am on my 5th set of batteries in the key, never had this problem with any other car. All four discs have been replaced once and they are vibrating again, it looks like they will need replacement again, I do a lot of high speed driving and braking.

I purchased my A6 2.7T in 2000 and currently have about 38K miles on it. The performance of the car has been excellent and the ride has been smooth and sometimes quiet. My only gripes with the car are the interior and othe minor details. Some of the interior components are cheap and flimsy and not worthy of a car at this price. I like manual transmissions and Audi is one of the few car companies left that offer one in a luxury car. Shifting from first to second when racing is a little cluncky but otherwise the transmission is fine.

I owned the Passat 1.8T prior to this car and was happy with the performance, handling and the interior held up much better in that car than in my Audi.

Strength:

The A6 2.7T trumps all others in its class with its combination of excellent acceleration, handling, passenger room, comfort and convenience, style and overall price. Others may have an advantage in one catagory, but cannot match the 2.7T in all. It provides the best compromise for those who want a reliable, fast, yet practical sports sedan without breaking the bank.

Weakness:

I am disappointed with overall mileage: I average around 22 to 24 mpg, with a 50/50 mix of highway and city drinving, although I drive in a more "spirited" manner than others might. Nevertheless, my BMW 328i averaged 25-27 mpg. Also, the front cupholders are not as robust as many others, it that is your chief concern. It is not as loud as I like under acceleration, but that is a fault I can live with.

This Audi A6 2.7T has lived up to all of my expectations, and more. I have a (pregnant) wife and two kids, so I wanted a performance vehicle that would still fit my family. I extensively researched cars in this class, and it provided the best cost, performance, style and size compromise. After owning two BMWs, my expectations on the performance end are high. The A6 2.7T is even quicker than the 540i, while much more affordable, and even less costly than the 530i, while massively faster. In either event, the 5 series is both smallish and being replaced soon. The Jaguar S-type is gorgeous, but way too small inside, and much slower. Handling is not up to par, either. The MB E-Class is untouchably expensive and way too sedate--not a performance car. The Lexus IS is way too small, and the GS is ugly, overpriced, and not my idea of fun. The only comparison was with the Acura 3.2TL Type R, which is very inexpensive and quick. However it is also not a handler, looks boring, is very common, and, most importantly, does not come with a shifter, except in a coupe; great value, though. Except for a slightly rough idle, the car has run flawlessly over 9,500 miles. Acceleration is a hoot, especially with the manual transmission. Turbo lag is very minimal, and only off the line. At other speeds, the engine just keeps pulling. This is the joy of driving a excellently engineered vehicle. Whether blasting away from stop signs, on freeway ramps or ducking around traffic, the accleration this car provides brings lots of grins. Cold weather has not been a problem, although even with the quattro, I put on performance snow tires, which affect the handling in the dry a bit. Otherwise, handling is very sharp, especially for a larger car, so long as you keep your boot on the accelerator to keep the quattro and other systems active and assisting. Handles almost as well as the BMW 530i I tested, and that is a compliment. Brakes are great, but again, not up to BMW standards. Performance-wise, I am very satisfied. Reliability has thus far been perfect, except the Bose stereo display developed a small outtage, so I had it replaced--no hassles, and done at the normal service interval. I haven't backed it over anything, so no comment on how its bumpers are--although it certainly has adequate ground clearance for inclined driveways and the like. All of my passengers have been very comfortable, and the interior is better thought out and more intuitively useful than any other vehicle that I know. Only the Jag S-Type is more luxurious in its class. I also get various unsolicited comments on its looks, as well. Cost was a major factor. While its sticker price is ballpark for similar cars in the class, Audi's discounts and low financing made this far less expensive than the competitors on the performance end (except for the Acura). I paid nothing down, no deposit, bought lots of extra miles up front and my payment is still less than $700/mo. with taxes. Nobody could touch that in this class, with this performance. My family loves this car, and I love it. Audi has a high content, barn burner here. I highly recommend it.

Strength:

Comfortable interior. Good sound system. Superb handling.

Weakness:

Very loud engine. Terrible gas mileage. Poor reliability. Rear is badly designed so that the wagon-design actually does not hold that much cargo volume.

The Audi A6 drives like a true luxury car--extremely smooth ride, beautiful handling--it is an effortless drive. The all-wheel drive makes a substantial difference in bad weather. The automatic displays give detailed descriptions of mechanical faults (e.g., it explicitly stated when one of the tail lights was out). Unfortunately, our experience with the A6 was extremely negative. It requires premium fuel, as do all luxury cars, but our Audi guzzled it. The digital mpg reading shows our average consumption at 16.5 miles/gallon. In city driving, it tends to average 9-10 miles per gallon. The reliability of our car was the poorest of any we have ever owned. The car was recalled twice, and we had to take it in on at least six separate occasions for repairs (the gas guage had to be replaced three times, the window became stuck down, a tail light failed, and the compressor died). The fuel costs and the waste of time on repairs were not at all worth it for this vehicle.

Strength:

The folks at Bernardi Audi are actually very good at service. I think they know that this product has some serious problems.

Weakness:

Unless you want to drag your front bumper on the ground for a few miles, I would recommend avoiding the use of this car in a parking lot.

I really liked this car a lot until the day the front bumper ripped right off on a curb in a parking lot. $1,800 repair. Two A4 owners saw it happen, came up to me and told me that the same thing had happened to them; to one of them, it had happened TWICE. The body shop told me that they see this all the time with Audi's, and pointed out how the low bottom plate both grips the curb and tears off the whole bumper when you back up. When this happens to you, I promise that this will end your love affair with this defective product. The fuel gauge recall was nice, too. I ran out of gas at the height of rush hour on I-95, with the gauge reading 1/4 full. Audi managed to find me every month to send me a bill, but surprisingly could not find me when it came time to send out the recall notice.

Strength:

Looks, Outside and Inside. Highway ride, Decent Power.

Weakness:

Transmission, Engine/Exhaust Sound, Ride is too soft.

I have always been a fan of this car. It is beautiful looking, it has, by far, the nicest interior of any car at any price, and it is a solid vehicle. I have to say, however that after purchasing this car that I have wanted to buy for at least the last 24 mos of my last car lease, I am underwhelmed. Yes, my car is great looking, handles very well but I have some gripes. First, the car is much more softly sprung then I thought, it bounces up and down over dips like an american car. Second, the transmission on this car is a pc. of s--t, and Third the car makes a lot of noise for such a "fine" car. The Transmission is a five speed which I would imagine would have a tall 5th gear for highway driving but I keep thinking at around 70, the car should shift to the next gear. At 75, the RPM is almost 3,000. Similarly, my Acura MDX also, 5 speed auto and 6 cylinder cruises silently at 2,000 at same speed. Also, the transmission hunts around for gears endlessly in city driving. If I am not bearing down on the accelerator, the car runs to 5th gear before I get to 40 mph. Then the slightest press on the pedal, the car jumps down a gear then right back up seemingly premature. To say the least, it is very aggrivating and for a new car, dissappointing. It has been getting cold in the mornings and the car will get stuck in first gear until around 3500 RPM even if I am going very slow and light on the pedal, then all the sudden will lurch into second gear very abrubtly. The engine sound reminds me of a Pontiac Grand Am trying to sound rough, not a refined sound of a car of this caliber. The previous engine 2.8, although not as powerful, was much smoother and more refined.

Model Reviewed: 3.0 A6 Avant

Strength:

Bose option is sweet. Controls well placed even if the ESP & hazards take up prime space. Cargo, head & leg room are above avg. The car rides very comfortably. I have been in quieter cars but this one is up there with the top. Best looking wagon out there. Excellent handling especially for a wagon. Front view is clear & open. Easy to find a good driving position. Highway gas mileage is better than I expected. Xenon headlights are awesome. I never had this feature in any of my other cars & I will never go without it again. (I don’t think Audi has a better system than any other manufacturer with Xenon Lights, but I am not sure). Fit & Finish - Perfect

Weakness:

Glove box & center console are way too SMALL! No steering wheel memory attached to memory seats & mirrors. No quick 1 button shutoff for the A/C/heat. Cupholders are small (They work great though). Defogger takes more time than other cars I have driven. Cruise control location takes some getting used to. No full spare. Headlights don't turn off automatically. Windshield wipers are not auto sensing. Gas mileage on the streets is weak. You can be mistaken for driving a portable w@!#*house with all the read lights on the dash & center console at night.

I am extremely satisfied with this automobile & this is coming from a tough critic. Overall if you like to drive cars, I believe this is the best all around wagon/Small SUV in the market. I was very worried about the power this car offered based on some of the reading I did prior to my purchase. The worrying was for naught. This car gets up to speed quickly with no hesitation. It is not a vette, but acceleration is better than most cars.
