Strength:

The Catera really ZIGS, it handles well with great acceleration, and gets good gas mileage. The interior is comfortable, trunk space is ample, and the car looks great on the road.

Weakness:

At 37,000 miles, I've had recent trouble with flat tires and car veering to the right. Had to replace three tires due to inner tire wear. I'm dissatisfied with dealership which changed tires because of their reluctance to diagnose wheel problems. I found a service bulletin (TSB 81-31-02) report on this problem. I notice other drivers have had similar problems.

Have a $399 per month four-year lease. Would recommend shorter lease. Believe dealers should be more familiar with common technical problems.

Well it the Caddie that ZIGS!! I have read some of the review and dont understand what is happening to my fellow Catera owners? I love every thing about this car. I maintain it, and once I needed to replace the battery. Now I have 113k miles and runs great, Iam glad I bought this car!

Weakness:

Poor cup holders, and bad take off power, but I NEVER had a problem with the drive train!

I would recommend this car! The only major work done on my car was at 100K the changing of my sparks plugs, timing belt, and transmission oil! Iam glad I bought this car! Honda and Toyota owners eat your heart out, we got a new luxury car that out ZIGS YALL!!

Strength:

It was a cheesy ad campaign, but this IS the Caddy that zigs! I live in the Rockies and drive a lot of tight mountain roads, and this car eats them up and begs for more. On the same hand it rides unbelievably quiet smooth. It gives so many luxuries for so little money. I bought my car with every option available (no cellphone) with 34000 miles. It was certified by Cadillac, so the warranty went to six years and seventy thousand miles from date of original service. So I have 3/36. It's like a new car warranty. The best part about this car is my local dealer. they bend over backwards for you. I had to have a headlight switch replaced and they provided me with a loaner untill my car was repaired. Oh yeah, The Bose premium sound is GREAT!

Weakness:

The cupholder is a joke. Not a lot of storage space in the cabin, but it's not a big deal. Seats could use a tad bit more bolster. A five speed auto with a tiptronic like manual shift would be nice too. Man, I really have to dig deep to find anything wrong with this car.

For the paltry 19000 I paid for this optioned out certified luxury perfomance sedan I can think of no other equal. I have been an autophile for all of my life and never thought I would want a car to haul the kids around in. But four doors over these four wheels is just what the doctor ordered. It's just a rebadged Opel Omega from Europe. And I am glad GM owns Opel. WOW! What the heck are you doing reading this? Get your butt down to your Cadillac dealer and get one NOW!

Strength:

The interior is roomy and very comfortable. The eletric leather seats make adjusting easy and long rides very comfortable. The Bose stereo system is first rate. The dash gauges are well located and easy to read. The interior lighting is well balanced. The engine is well powered and the car handles very well.I like the chrome wheels and large 16 inch tires.

Weakness:

The glove box is to small and there is no center console for storage. The cup holders should be located somewhere else. The trunk does not lock if you leave your car in a public parking garage.

I paid $17,900.00 with twenty seven thousand miles on the car. I highly recomend the car so far. The interior is well sound proofed so there is very little outside noise.

I love this fine fine luxury car. It is truly affordable I can
buy this car with my pocket change not that I'm arrogant or anything.
I say that this caddy is proud for its pricetag.

Weakness:

I hope cadillac thinks fast and makes the hp faster.

Price is way too low so buy it if you want.

Strength:

Bargain price, great sound system, good performance.

Weakness:

Some quality issues and several warranty repairs. Front end alignment is a problem on the Catera and I had to have the tires replaced twice in 35,000 miles (the first time under warranty)

If you really dicker with your Cadillac salesman you can probably get a Catera cheaper than you can buy any comparable car. I priced Avalons, Infinities, Bimmers--you name it. The lease price I got on the Catera was about a $100 a month lower than any car that I thought was about equal to it.
That said, I have not been entirely satisfied with the quality of the car. The front end needed to be aligned three times due to excessive tire wear and some of the interior trim has broken under light use. (the cupholder). I've also had a few minor problems with hoses and warning lights.
But Cadillac has a very good warranty policy and has fixed everything without (much) complaint. I have also found their service to be excellent.
At the price I am very happy with the car. Performance is good, though certainly not in the same category as my beloved V-8 Seville SLS. Handling is tight, but smooth on the highway. Acceleration is good--- if you step down hard. The interior is slightly cheaper than the upper echelon luxury cars, but then again, you pay a whole lot less for 90% of the same thing.
Don't pay full sticker for this car. Dicker hard and play the dealer against the Toyota dealer across the street. You can probably get it for $5000 off list (maybe more, I don't know). As long as the warranty lasts, this car is much better than an Avalon and probably signifigantly cheaper.

Not quite in the same class as the Seville SLS I had before it, but much, much cheaper.

Strength:

I enjoy the handling, and the horsepower seems to kick in around 1500rpm. I also like the 16 inch wheels.

Weakness:

Well, I want to say that I do enjoy the car but, since it has turned 35K I am experiencing a lot of warrenty issues. In the last two months I have had the AC compresor, harmonic balancer, fuel sending unit, fuel gauge, exteior trim replaced I also think that the class A surfacing (interior design) could have been done better.

I am looking forward to driving the new 2000, I hope that they got the bugs out. I think the next time I spend that kind of money, I'll get a BMW.

Strength:

I previously leased a 1997 Catera and had problems with the front end alignment. This problem caused me to replace 3 sets of tires within 31 months of ownership. The new 2000 Caters has been completely re-done. I'am impressed with the new lines on the outside and also the interior changes that have been done. They have improved the shifting of the transmission alot smoother than the 1997.new placement of the window controls from the center console to where they belong along the door. The new ONSTAR feature is slick and reduces my insurance premium. This car has been finally improve to the point that it easily competes with all cars in its price range. GM reduce the base sticker 2000.00 compared to the 1997 model. A fun car to drive

Weakness:

They still haven't figured out a storage plan for cassettes or c.d's. Not a real big deal but a nusance.

Sticker price of 34,500.00 included Sunroof,Bose sound system with cassette and single cd player. Leather and 16" chrome wheels. I think GM finally got the bugs out of this Cadillac entry level car.All in all I was generally satisfied with my 1997 Catera with the exeption of my tire problem which GM took care of but I'am really excited about the 2000 model.

Strength:

Power, accelaration, lot of room inside, nice control panel, loaded with a equipment, handles great on the road even on the high speed and rain, you really can feel that you have a control of car. Good visability, strong headlights. For all that you need to pay only $30,000! that's a still!

Weakness:

Compartment space inside. Would be nice if the hand brake is on left side under the stear wheel - like mercedes has.
Just little more space for cell phone, sunglasses and other junk.

I paid $22,500 for 1998 with 3000 miles on it. Defenetly I would recommend this car to everyone - Catera also has great extended warranty program - check with your dealer.
Negotiate the price - tag on my car was $30,000! Dealers are soft on Catera's price, new model 2000 had a price reduction so that's kills the price 98 and 99's Cateras.
Use this opportunity until Cadillac promoting this car.

Similar Products Used:

I wouldn't compare with BMW 3 class or 280 Mercedes it's more comparable by size and power as well the features on the car with BMW 5 or Mercedes E class. Just look the price tag on the each of this cars and decide what is good for you. Lexus is not car for me - trying to hard to copy Mercedes - no personality
