Jaguar S-Type Luxury

Jaguar S-Type Luxury

DESCRIPTION

(1998 - 2008) The Jaguar S-Type is a 4-door, 5-passenger luxury sedan, or luxury sports sedan.
<
The name was a revival of a previous Jaguar model, the S-Type introduced in 1963, while the bodywork appeared to have been inspired by the Jaguar Mark 2 of the same period. The supercharged 390-horsepower S-Type R was added for 2003. The S-Type is in its final model year for 2008 before the expected arrival of the all-new 2009 XF in March 2008.

Strength:

Looks great

Weakness:

Not enough leg room. 5 window regulators went out. Jaguar has not recalled them 1 cup holder Trunk opens by itself-usually on the freeway. Brakes make noises. I've had them replaced 3 times. Car shakes at high speeds. Sunroom worked intermittently. Front window cracked after washing the car due to the heat.

This is definitely the last Jag I lease.

Strength:

Lots of power, lots of character, great handling, comfort, appearance. The 2003 model has a better transmission, more power, and more safety features, but the trunk space is slightly reduced.

Weakness:

I got a flat, and when I got out the spare I found it was one of those "space-saver" wheels (about 1/3 the width of a standard Jag tire). These things are ugly, dangerous and unworthy of a car of this quality. I also found the standard tires (Pirellis) wore out very quickly (about 15,000km (10,000 miles). The weird ashtray design made it difficult to plug in the lead for my radar detector. The center rear seat is very unconfortable. Basically, this is a four-seater. The CD player doesn't accept MP3s (2000 and 2003 models). Double-locking/alarm armed is confirmed by sounding the horn instead of the beep that most car alarm systems use. That's a bit embarassing, and in New Zealand it's illegal to use the horn except as an emergency warning. The 2003 model has no audible confirmation of locking/alarm arming.

I drove a 4.0L V8 S-type for nearly 4 years without any major problems and just traded it in for the 2003 model (4.2 liters). The total depreciation was just under 50% over the ownership period. Apart from some minor irritations that could easily be fixed, I find the S-Type and excellent vehicle with superbly understated style.

Strength:

Looks like no other (remember when all cars had a distinct look - even from a distance). Interior is much richer looking with most. Handles quite nicely. Navigation system is a life saver.

Weakness:

Transmission should get more that 53,000. Not enough cup holders. No back seat leg room.

OWNERS BEWARE: I have owned my Jaguar S-Type since I fell in love with it on January 21, 2000. Here we are in March of 2003 and I am heart broken (and mad). I am preparing for a trip to Las Vegas so the week before I take my car in for a few "little" items. Drivers brake light is burned out, makes a "chirp" in the morning only and the transmission might be slipping. Service rep quotes 220.00. Get a call, the transmission needs to be reprogrammed - the bill goes to 660.00. At this point I am still o.k.. Next call - I need a new transmission because the reprogramming did not work. Now the bill is 7,000.00. I have 52,313 miles on the car and am out of warranty. So we ask how much for the trade in. 16,500 minus the work required is the figure we get. This gives me a trade in value of 9,500. I owe 12,531. So I will have to pay Jaguar to take my car!!!!! A few notes. At the time I bought this car - no extended warranty was available. I was not informed that at 48,000 miles I could have then gone back and bought an extended warranty. And I am extremely upset that I can only expect 52,000 miles out of this transmission. Our niece lives with us and drives a 1981 Toyota Camry with over 200,000 miles on it AND it has the original transmission. Our secretary drives a Trooper with 154,000 miles on it AND the original transmission. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE. The dealer is certainly appologetic - but out of warranty is out of warranty. I will also add that we took a trip to Sedona, Arizona to gather with friends. The drivers window started making a "funny" noise. When we returned from our trip (280 miles each way) I brought my car in with 50,245 miles on it. The window needed to be replaced - the cost was 1345.00. Jaguar would not cover it. I explained that we were out of the state, and we were told that we should have stopped at a dealership in Arizona. I argued that we did not want to take vacation time for something that did not seem an emergency - and the dealer was appologetic, but the cost was still ours. This morning, I will spend time once again talking with Jag. I spent the weekend looking at new cars. Mercedes will probably be my choice, but now I will be driving a car that may give me backing and performance, with absolutely no distinction on looks. Sounds silly, but both are important to me. I am extremely dissapointed and only wish that Jag would have been willing to back this "mishap".

Strength:

Drives nice and looks nice! Interior nice.

Weakness:

NO CUPHOLDERS. If you have children, this is not the right car to buy! The CD changer takes up the entire glove box. I need this for papers, tissues, etc.

I bought a used-lease 2000 Jag in September of 2002. So far no problems, except the battery went dead and it was covered under warranty. It does have a good warranty. Does anyone have problems with the heater? I try to let it warm up before getting into it in the morning. (at least 10 minutes) and it never is warm like all my other cars I've had. Also, when you stop the heater stays on; but cool air comes out - not warm air. What is the problem? The service dept. says that is the way jaguars are. Is anyone else experiencing this. I sure would like to know if it's just because its a Jag or there is a heating problem with it before the warranty expires.

Strength:

Great "HTQ" - Head Turning Quotient. The lines when looking out over the hood are wonderful, the wood and leather steering wheel always a pleasure in the hand. A stable, smooth, always comfortable ride. Just can't say enough good things about this car. I love cars and this one is tops.

Weakness:

If you worry about things such as number of cupholders and size of glovebox (mine has the CD stacker in it), then I guess that would be the weakness. She is also a bit thirsty, but I could care less -- the rest of the package more than makes up for that!

A truly super driving experience in every way whether for business or pleasure. In any road or weather conditions you feel as if you are in a protected cocoon. Totally reliable and trouble free. She always purrs right along!

Pretty car and runs well when we have it out of the shop. Only 18,000 miles since 4-2001.

Weakness:

Trunk Space, Leg room. Breaks down alot. TNo extra plug for a phone and the one plug we have is the lighter and it keeps breaking

The car looks great and runs great when it's running. We have had numerous problems including a short in the fan motor, floor mats rotted on the backside, lighter is broken for the third time right now, glass is crazed and has been replaced once. When the dealer replaced it they scratched the car and the drivers side glass so badly that we have to take it back next week and leave it for several days for body work and glass work. The trunk is too small rear leg room awful. This is the second Jaguart the first was a 1969 XKE that was an electrical nightmare. This is definately the LAST!! Glad it's leased

Strength:

The above-referenced overheating problem far outweighs any of the car's strengths.

Weakness:

Engine overheats regularly.

The engine of my 2002 Jaguar S-Type, purchased in April, 2002, has overheated four times, three of which resulted in roadside assistance and a tow. My dealer does not seem to be able to diagnose the root cause of the problem. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Strength:

Very quick on take-off. Resposive handling. Very attractive exterior.

Weakness:

No leg room in back seat. Excessive wheel noise. Steering wheel vibrates at all speeds.

We are extremely diappointed with this car. We have had BMW's in the past and made a change this year to try the new 300hp S-Type V8 Sport Jaguar. We have had the car for 5 months. So far it has been in the shop four times. That's almost once a month. The first trip was for something that seems to be very consistent in the reviews I've read about the steering wheel shaking at interstate speed and the excessive wheel noise. You would expect more from a car like this wouldn't you? The next three visits have been from a transmission problem that literally scares you to death when you are driving the car. It shifts really hard out of first gear. After driving it a while the "restricted Performance" warning comes on and the car simply won't go at all. If you are stopped at a stoplight and you accelerate, the car acts as if it is out of gas. It does this until you get it serviced. So far, all the dealer does is reset the computer. THe car drives fine for a while then does the exact same thing. Thankfully, we bought the car in Ohio, which has a consumer-friendly lemon-law which we are studying whether or not we can use it. Sorry to say, we don't like this car one bit.

Strength:

Power, roadability, styling and comfort.

Weakness:

Not as much trunk space as I am used to.

I find this to be an excellent car! I had a Cadillac ETC before and I much prefer the Jaguar. I haven't had it long enough to judge its reliability, but it is a very solid feeling car with a lot of power and good creature comforts.
