4th S class. Excellent Car, This the the last year of the Benz W126, The interior materal use is so good. Although the car is more than 10 year old. It still look a almost like brand new. The car is 65000km on the clock roughly 40625miles. Still drive like brand new. The engine is so quiet as when the car is at idling you have to double check whether you have started the car. Comfort is excellent. The original paint still shines but with one spot is peeling next the the front grille otherwise is perfect. If you see the car you cannot tell this is a 13year car. The desgin stil look modern. Fuel consumption is quite high. accerelation is reasonably good on such a heavy car. Handly is far on the confort side and NOT sporty at all. Again although this car is 13 years old car but I is way better the most brand new Japanese car now available on the market. The old Benz are generally over build. If you take care of them. They should last for ever.

Strength:

Quality of Ride, Workmanship, Engine Power/Performance

Weakness:

It's kind of big, and also head-turning. Requires valet parking when goto downtown San Francisco.

This is a S500 1997 model. Now with 73000 miles, still solid and smooth. It is a BIG car. Yet gas mileage is reasonable (avg. 18 miles in my daily driving). Ride quality is excellent. At 60 miles per hour, I can talk with passengers in the back seat without raising my voice at all. I can even do that during my acceleration to 80 miles. The engine delivers ample power and torque for highway passing, in such a quiet and smooth manner. Mercedes used top-graded materials in this model. Workmanship is also top-notched. Compared to Lexus GS430 I tested the other day, the S-500 is entirely another class. GS430 is a very good car, and a very fast car. But the riding quality is not at the same level as the S500. Engine noise of the GS430, when push hard (while, you have to push hard to achieve the performance claimed by Lexus), can penetrate significantly into the car, making the car sounds like a Honda Accord. (I used Honda Accord and Lexus GS430 in comparison, since I consider this two cars are already at the top of the balance between performance and comfort in its own class.) So the bottom line is, if you want to treat yourself well, I suggest getting a Mercedes S-class. Someone may claim some other cars have similar luxury that cost a lower price. I will have to agree. But if you want the best, S-class deserves a very close look.

Strength:

The carefully placed wood trim nicely accents the aluminum and metal fixtures around the cabin. The COMAND system isn't as complicated as people say. I've learned to use it without a manual...through trial and error. (I guess b/c I grew up in the techno revolution.) The Airmatic Suspension coddles the passengers, relieving them from the trials and tribulations of New Orleans pot hole driving. The car also can be raised to give higher clearance during natural disasters such as floods or simply to avoid scraping the front lip spoiler on a ridiculously high driveway. Another spoiling feature is the rear vanity mirrors. The rear passengers are delivered with two lighted fold down vanity mirrors and reading lights, whilst the front passengers are spoiled further with zoom-feature vanity mirrors and Xenon reading lamps. The car is packed with an endless list of pampering features. This is what you pay for...it's not just the exclusivity, the marquee, but it's also the luxury, refinement, and exquisite attention to detail that make Mercedes outshine all other brands. You know, it's the only brand that offers 24 hour free road side assitance (gas, flat tire, spare tire, etc.) even after

Weakness:

(cont'd from strengths) the four year warranty has expired! Did I mention the pneumatic automatic soft-close doors? Precisely...simply astonishing! Some materials aren't of the highest quality, i.e. the interior roof. Also, the CD-ROM based navigation system could use a DVD based navi system (This will relieve many of us travellers from changing CDs as we hop around from city to city.) The $90,000+ car could also use a 6-disc CD changer. They seemed to have thought of everything else but the CD changer! =)

The Mercedes-Benz S Class glides quietly and smoothly on the highways and byways with speeds in excess of 100 mph. The cabin is warm and soothing with butter smooth, glove soft nappa leather. Our family has been acquainted with quite a few marques, however, Mercedes always seems to lead the pack. It not only looks ravishing on the inside and outside with its coupe like curves and opulent jewel-box interior, but it also drives effortlessly with an impeccable demeanor. It's quite pulchritudinous!

Excellent looks, drive, handling, performance, reliability and interior room.

Weakness:

Average ergonomics, comfort and trunk room. Navigation system needs more precise maps. I would hate to really depend on it to not get lost.

Best looking 4 door today. Perfect reliability, drive & handling. 4300 V8 best all around choice. Plenty of power and still gets decent mileage. Navigation system does not have all points of destination or steets programmed. Ample room, but being 6'-5", ergonomics could be improved and seats are not very comfortable. Trunk seems small. My previous 94' Cadillac Fleetwood was much better in these 3 areas.

Weakness:

God forbid someone should buy a neglected 560. That's punishment. Buy a good one and you'll reap the reward.

This car has been my chariot for over 3 years. I love the W126, much less sophisticated than my W140 though. Sturdy, reliable, solid and always willing to be driven hard. Slight oil leaks required retorquing heads, tranny seepage after 230,000 km - but geez, what a car. Starts always, runs with the best of them, even gets 28 mpg (imperial) highway. What on earth more does a feller need? I love mine, just go out and find one with a good history, cherished ownership and one that is being sold for a realistic price. Many people think they're too precious - but if you have the coin - the best new car on the market in 1988 is also the best used 1988 car 14 years later. Period. Mind you, I was recently wowed by the depreciation on a W140 600SEL - so I bought it. Much more swank than a W126, but missing that honest to goodness visceral feeling of a supremely solid Panzer. My new(to me) 600 is more like an ingot.

I'm on my 7th Benz. I love diesels, but the V8 (&V12!) models suffer far more depreciation, making them potent bargains. I've even had a BMW (which fell apart), as well as the usual Japanese stuff, wh

Lousy dealers. Bugs in software

I picked up the car, my 4th S-class (after 380SE, 500SEL, S500), came to my office and in the evening the car would not start. 42 km on the dash! Service could not start it -- MB has not found the problem -- took the car back. Dealership is awful, car was great for the 12 km I drove it! I am figuring out a way to buy the car without involving the dealer. Buy the silver, not the black - because of the body shape lines. Ignore the dealer like a necessary evil.
