Strength:

powerful, solid, smoothest shift you can imagine for an automatic. hugs the road... feels like part of my body... it's design is so classic i bet its still modern-looking in 2010!

Weakness:

electrical glitches, plastic top of front dash cracked. so low to the ground you'd BETTER not go over a bump too fast or your oil pan'll cost you about a grand. expensive to fix. but worth it.

my favorite car to date. never enjoyed driving until i bought this one. i love that its so rare here in LA too. nobody looks at BMWs or Benzs anymore, and i get compliments on this car all the time. i inherited a brand new passat 4 cyl with 10,000 miles, and i sold it. prefer to keep my alfa.

Strength:

Strong visual presence, high quality leather trim, addictive performance from great engine with terrific exhaust note for a luxury car, rarity.

Weakness:

Fickle electical equipment and air-con, creaky plastic dash, plastic inner wheel arches which wear right through when foolish previous owner fits too large tyres, heavy and hard to fit alloy wheels ('93 model wheels, look sharp though). Interior rather dark in blue-tinged charcoal colour.

Always admired Alfas apart from some quirky '80s styling, but hadn't quite seen myself as Alfista 'til I saw and drove this car - it seemed to have so much to offer for the price (US$2800 approx). The Alfa emblem embossed on the seats was one of those things that helped clinch the purchase! Though really it was the way it looked,(in Alfa Red), went, and sounded. I've loved every second behind the wheel so far and am looking forward to showing it to a friend or two - especially the one who paid NZ$25000 for a Saab 9000 and got a less interesting car for her extra $20000. 24V QV model must be a fine machine, but I couldn't afford the inevitable speed camera fines. Now I wanna go for a drive!

Strength:

Excellent engine. Pininfarina line. Alfa heart and soul. Still firm poise at 240 km/hour. Fuel economy on freeway, but you lose the pleasure to have other provoking BMWs and Subarus eat your dust.

Weakness:

Electric glitches. Fast wear-out on two front tires.

Bought secondhand in 2000 when its speedo was 23,000 km. My fourth Italian and second Alfa, and the best whatever country or make I've ever owned. Drives much better and faster than BMW 525i. I use it to work everyday and put 100,000 extra km on it. But inside out it still feels like day one.

Strength:

Very smooth on motorways upto speeds of 130 mph. Great in country lanes at 50 mph, good comfort, even for passengers, servicing a lot cheaper than V6. Oil is clean after 3000miles

Weakness:

Power steering a bit too heavy, Electrics go weird sometimes. Front tyre wear, Ape like driving position, if you are over 6Ft tall.

The European Alfa 164 has very suttle differences to the U.S spec cars. My car has the total spec, including Air Con seats. Its good to drive and own. The 2.0 8v engine is best giving a combined fuel consumption of 36 miles to the gallon ( English Gallon ). The engine can be tweaked with a air induction kit, to boost the BHP up by 30 to 180 Bhp.

Fast!! This car is fast with all the appropriate italian V-6 sounds. It is excellent on gas (compared to my mustang 5.0 convertable, anything is excellent on gas!!) and it drives very smooth

Weakness:

Parts are expensive and hard to find. Finding a mechanic that knows about Alfas is a problem

Fantastic car. This car ALWAYS puts a smile on my face! This is a true sports sedan. The response of the engine and the sound, glorious!

No rust at all on body and paintwork still like new. Roadholding superb for a poweful FWD car. Acceleration at hight speed, Really comfortable and an absolute thrill to drive. All the electric gizmos.

Weakness:

High cost of main dealer spares. Cambelt/tensioner failure within change period. Torque steer can be scary till you get use to it,then its fun. Poor turning circle. Climate control display unit. Weird elec faults that cure themselves. Front tire wear. depreciation (In the UK)

Brilliant car, Looks beautiful as new. Real head turner. The 3 liter engine growls superbly and the performance is unbelievable for a saloon (Sedan) car.A little slow off the mark but after that there aint a lot around here that can catch it!!!!!!!!!

Strength:

Style. Handling. Interior features. Cruising power. Comfort. Alfa Romeo exclusivity. (it was always great fun to watch the Acura/Lexus owners pull up behind at a stoplight, and see them first squint at the logo, then mouth "Alfa Romeo" and glance at their passenger-- remember, this is the USA market)

Weakness:

Engine timing belt drive system requires absolutely religious, regular maintenance by qualified service techs to be consistently reliable. 12-valve cars were (I hear) easier to maintain in this regard. Later cars (''94 on) were more reliable electrically, more refined, more expensive.

We owned our LS (aka Super in other markets) 24 valve, automatic transmission model for 6 years, and we loved it. The decision to sell it last year was a tough one, but necessary. They are a very comfortable, fast, refined and agile genuine Alfa Romeo sports sedan. Our car was very reliable, in spite of a timing belt disaster at 17,000 miles (warranty repair, of course). Thereafter, we encountered only minor problems but were never stranded. Electrically the car performed extremely well. My wife drove it daily carting our young son around, and she received compliments on a regular basis from all sorts of people, knowledgeable and otherwise! It was not a gas-it-up and forget it Toyota, but then no Toyota sedan ever came close to the style and panache our LS had, either. A fine car, but not for the uninitiated or naive owner.
