Strength:

Great engine. Sounds absolutely glorious! Very strong clutch. Electronically adjustable suspension. Auto-mode makes driving in the city a little nicer. Excellent inteor, high quality, strong Italian leather. Very fast.

Weakness:

Hard to find service in the US. Does your home town have a Ferrari Mechanic? Thus giving it a higher cost to maintain. High oil consumption (about 1 liter every 1000 miles). Fitting with insufficient springs for the US market. Once replaced (with European OE or high quality aftermarket) the suspension is great! The stock brakes are not up to par with the weight and speeds it is capable of reaching. Would recommend upgraded braking system upon purchasing (Brembo or Tarox).

Beautiful vehicle. Looks different (and great) from every angle. Great car to drive. Hugs the road like any sports car. Not too quick off the line, but very, very fast. Use the whole speedometer! Handles great, corners very well. Very fun driving in the mountains. Impressise friends/colleagues/family members/doubting thomas very quickly this way. Impressive interior, completely covered in leather with red stitch. Like a Ferrari with four doors! Very fast.

Strength:

Plenty of power built well overall Looks like nothing else on the road (in USA) All around fabulous car!

Weakness:

Stepper motors for HVAC timing belt/valve maint. Can wear tires excessively if not watched closely

I have had several Alfas and this is my second 164, going on 5 years with this car. This Alfa is one of the best cars I have ever owned. Some make comments about the reliability of the 164 but mine has been bullit proof. The car drives and handles like some newer cars of much higher price. It is a nice alternative to a BMW or Aisan 4 door sport.

Great car extremely underated. Mine is the facelift QV 24v. Agile and poised handling. Can look tired if not pristine. great engine and manual gearbox (auto box is a major weak point). previously owned a auto 3.0 12v which had a troublesome box not unusual. Must be bought "right" to avoid problems, however this is applicable to all cars. Few owners, FSH (with receipts) is the current owner a nice person ? Never buy from someone you don"t like!!

Model Reviewed: 164TS Lusso 2 Litre

Strength:

Engine just goes and goes, handling is sharp. 2 Litre is economical at 30mpg or so. Its that rare thing, a large car that is truly a drivers car. Most parts can be obtained at reaonable cost.

Weakness:

Poor rear suspension with bad reaction to bumps. Very slow heater. Official parts and dealer costs are a scandal.

This is my 2nd 164TS and my third Alfa. I have owned this one for 2 years and covered 22k miles. Replacements have been limited to Radiator, Exhaust, 4 tyres, front brake pads, power steering drive belt. The car has never broken down and is in remarkable condition for a nine year old that is used every day. A the other say..who wants a BMW ..and why! Its a complete mystery to me why sell for so little secondhand.

Strength:

V6 engine, styling, awesome touring car thats what it loves, doin 125mph on a long trip.

Weakness:

Oh, man. here we go, stepper motors, suspension, minor electrics here and there, bearings, rubber, alignment is fragile, overheats, A/C.

This is my pretty hate machine. I love everything about the car. From it''s flawless styling to it''s awesome sounding italian V6. Nothing compares to this car. Italian styling rules.I love the looks people give me in my ride, not to mention everyone thinks it is only a year old...maybe. Great power, good handling if you use the right components, really reliable if you take care of it everyday. A little TLC evryday it it will keep you chuggin down the highways.

Model Reviewed: Base, manual transmission

Strength:

Engine and transmission, wonderful sounds when you run it up in the gears. Comparatively rare, yet inconspicuous on the road. Interior velour has not worn at all so far. Very high overall quality.

Weakness:

Front suspension strut design is poor, very deceptive at speed, though here in Kansas, the officers are usually friendly while they write the ticket! Headlights are not up to the standard or capabilities of the car. Foglights are there, but of little use.

This is the best car for day-to-day driving I have ever owned. A very fine long distance car, best one day run so far has been 1200 odd miles. A looong day! Very comfortable, fast, quiet inside(except for that glorious engine note when the throttle is open)and reliable, provided maintenance is scrupulously done. I do it all myself, because I don''t trust any mechanic I have met yet to do a careful job. Cost for parts is reasonable, for what it is. Parts are readily available both new and used in the U.S. I have had no problems with electronics - so far - but then I watch over all the car very carefully, and I do own a workshop manual and electrical manual, and I use them. The car now has 150,000 miles, and is running smooth and strong. I change oil(synthetic) and filter religiously at 5000 miles or less, engine and transmission. I have not changed the factory settings, suspension, or engine. I believe this car is well thought out as it is, a superb grand touring 4-door sedan, fairly economical - I get about 27 mpg even when I''m running over 80. I love this car.

the dash is a bit different and don''t care for the lack of a wood knob.

Simply the cheepest way to feel young. This machine is about heart and soul, and it still has four doors and a good size trunk. I will keep this car as long as possible. I''ve owned M-B and BMW and this is simply the best; not the fastest, not the most expensive just the best.

Strength:

Performance(after 60-70 kmh) Looks Handling Quality size, weight(safety)

Weakness:

performance (under 60-70 kmh);(could be fixed through modification, which an engine of this quality can easily accomodate) too much plastic for an executive sedan needs petrol to turn it into what it is electric failures(who cares) expensive parts stiff clutch could''ve had better softer leather size, weight(maneuverability, low rev performance) shifting is not smooth and short enough

Big car, small price. 7 years old but looks, feels, runs like a 1-2 year-old. Engine at 154k km, but feels more like 15k! Beautiful, but subtle. Very comfortable, well manufactured and luxurious for an Alfa. Needlessly heavy, though;but, amazing performance for the weight. Excellent handling(if you''re an experienced and skilled driver).Wonderful engine noise. Mine has 215/45/17 tyres yet the ride is much much softer than you''d expect. Most importantly: unique, has character in this rotten age of mass-production(why call it a skoda if it''s exactly like a passat?)

Strength:

Engine, style, sensuality, and handling.

Weakness:

Automatic gearbox, dipsomainacs delight for petrol, tight headroom, expensive parts, lack of aftermarket upgrades, few specialists, and high insurance.

The usual love/hate relationship most people have with Italian cars. I love the way it drives, handles, looks, and sheer sensuality of the car. Has never let us down, and has been remarkably reliable...with constant preventative maintenance. I have had it for over four years now, and replaced the transmission, steering rack, power steering pump, water pump, radiator, numerous switches etc. Still love it, especially blasting around the local canyons and mountains. Hope to keep it until Alfa returns to the US in 2004.
