Strength:

Been a reliable car now with 170,000.

Weakness:

It is a little small sometimes.

This is the first year 1990 1/2 2.2ltr Throttle Body Injection. (TBI) 1 of just a few model years before multi-port. All the parts for it come under 1991. It's not a fast car having the 4spd. OD automatic,
but it does ok. It has been a good one with no major problems, doesn't burn oil. They all ride a little rough. This car is probably exceptional which is why I won't rate it 5 stars. They all have their problems though.
(GM Radiators) I thought the plastic tube ports for the heater core was a little cheap. After market core for 30 bucks far surpasses original.

Strength:

Bought new.First new car.Likes:2.2 engine w/OHV valves [I'm old fashioned that way]4 speed auto.w/trac.control,air,spoiler all for 11,808 [with all the "incentives"]. Beautiful shape will still look good 10 years from now;reminds me of the first Camaros in size and weight and a little like the 75 Monza 2+2.Seems over built for a small car. Also like the safety features, the two sided galvanized steel body,ABS, 15 inch tires gas mileage is great: 22 in L.A. traffic/almost 37 mpg on one leg of the I-5 going to Oregon.Perfect size for metro driving, comfortable and quiet on the road. Great value;as much as I will EVER pay for a car, could have bought 2 or 3 Pintos for the price 25 years ago.Rides like a much larger car.Great for long distances.

Weakness:

Odd dash rattles, but after reading all these posts, I'll chalk it up as a standard feature, quiet, but hollow sounding, will try to correct when I have to buy new tires. Nothing else I can complain about,it's just the right purchase.Get rid of that stupid console;what's the point of having FWD for the passenger room if they're going to put a plastic log down the center of the car!!!!?????? It IS handy though.

High value, safety features, simple and inexpensive if you need repairs, comfortable, does everything it needs to do as a day to day work horse, pretty, comfortable and priced right. Have 15,500 miles on mine and the "rough" 2.2 gets smoother every day, and has this knockabout quality as if you could abuse it and it'll still be going strong thousands of miles later.

Similar Products Used:

86 Olds Calais: Cavalier rides better [you don't hear bumps as well as feel them],2.2 smoother, quieter and more powerful,4 speed auto:no comparison. Better build quality in the 90's than the 80's I think. The Olds is still going strong as my parents are driving it now. It handles better than the Cavalier, but I would rather have the less firm ride I have now.
Neon:interior looks cheap with a nasty polyester fabric;no longer trust Chryco. any longer, have heard too many bad things about them.
Escort: seats like a park bench, noisy
Sentra/Honda:Price too high, seats too low in Civic, a jack knife position in the Sentra AND too low to the floor. No std.ABS, dealers arrogant.

Model Reviewed: Cavalier Z24

Strength:

Very torquey engine, 2.4L definetly pulls its own weight, not to mention the quad 4 has been around for quite sometime and is a great design. New looks for 2000 are sharp. Factory 16" alloys, CD player, fog lights, many nice features. Off the line it will spank most 4 cyls, including Civic Si's, Integra's, Accords, MX-6's - 155lb/ft of torque will do that!

Weakness:

Outside noise while driving can be louder but not unbearable by any means. Driver side floor mat sometimes slides forward and catches the clutch. Doors sometimes want to close by themselves. No 4 wheel disc brakes.

For the price you pay, you get a lot more performance when next to a Civic Si or something comparable. I had already signed a lease on an Electron Blue Civic Si when I saw my Z24 Cavy. I asked why would I pay 4,000 more for a car with the exact same options AND less power (155lb/ft @ 4,400 RPMs vs. 111 lb/ft @ 7,000 RPMs!!) You get a bigger 4 cylinder motor which doesn't have to be revved up into the 7-8k range to produce power. I drove back in my new Z24 and cancelled the deal on the Si. The new looks for the 2000 Cavy are gorgeous, not to mention many standard features like 16" alloys. You can't beat this car in a sport compact field, I only wish they offered 4 wheel disc brakes as an option, although I will be adding them shortly. Also this car is all USA, being built in Ohio (not Mexico).

Similar Products Used:

1996 Honda Accord LX - Way more low end torque
2000 Honda Civic Si - Defintely more power off the line, except for 4 wheel disc brakes, more performance for the money.
1995 Mazda MX-6 - Faster, more interior space
1992 Saturn SL1 - Quite a bit more power, tad bit less room
1995 Saturn SC1 - More power, more room

Strength:

Great power, easy to work on, killer body style(some people mistaken it for a mustang), 130,000+ miles, only minor work needed with hoses, brake maintaince, lube maintance, plugs and wires

Weakness:

Heavy glass in convertible top, over time will start ripping out, moisture builds up in light lenses

I would recommend the convertible to anyone who can afford a new top every four or five years. I would recommend a hard top to anyone who likes plenty of power and a mean looking car if dressed right.

Model Reviewed: Cavalier 2.2 coupe

Strength:

The car is economical with 25/30 MPG automatic.
Insurance is inexpensive because it has dual air bags, anti-lock brakes daytime running lights and frankly its not very expensive in the first place. It has a nice standard tires, not small narrow ones like on some imports and domestics.
It holds the road nice, easy to manuvere and park. Good trunk space. Easy to find parts and replacement work is affordable if needed of course.
Nice smooth transmission, adequate engine.

Weakness:

The coupe has several blind spots and the back windshield is very long and oblique, distorting figures when backing up.
Could use alittle more passing power, and it isn't the quickest to down shift. Need to floor it if you want to maintain your speed up steep hills.
Some rattles and squeaks from front and back.
The back seat needs more leg room and could be more comfortable, but you get what you pay for.
Entry/Exit from the back is a pain, but to be expected from 2dr.

I would recommend the cavalier for people who want basic transportation without all the extras. It's not the fastest or most luxurious car in its class but will get you from point A to point B more economically. I bought mine 2 years old with 20,000 miles and have put on 16,000 trouble free miles. The only thing I replaced under warranty was the battery and that may have been the fault of the audio accessories place that put in the cd player and alarm/keyless entry. I think the battery had a short in it, how it got there I dont know.
It has been reliable to me and I expect it to make it to 100,000 miles before having to replace anything major. The tranny fluid and spark plugs shouldnt need replacing until then according to GM.
I have noticed that the anti-lock brakes work well, almost too well, up here during the winter weather it seems any locking is quickly fixed with the engaging of the system. I'm not quite use to that vibrating brake feel yet.
This car will work well for you if you appreciate it and don't abuse it. However, don't expect to race anybody except maybe a metro or sub 100hp vehicle.

Strength:

The cavalier is an economical car with good gas milage. It's nice to look at with a sporty exterior.

Weakness:

In less than 2 years many problems has arison. The ABS sensor has crashed, two fuel injectors has been leaking (still strong gas fumes), the intake manifold is currently in need of replacement, the dash squeaks, there is a bumping/popping in the rear, brakes are constantly being replaced, and the list goes much, much further.

I would not recommend this product unless you-yourself is a mechanic!!!!
