Strength:

fully loaded--power sun/moonroof, a/c, cd, power windows, keyless entry, auto traction control, nice styling, good factory sound, many after market add-ons available. Even though it is an automatic if you stomp on the gas it takes of like a standard. inexpensive for features it offers. LOW INSURANCE

Weakness:

head rest of seat sits back to far

I paid 10,000 for this car and believe it is money well spent. Car is excellent transportation but also is sporty. FUN CAR. Low insurance especially for young drivers. I would definatly recommend to anyone looking at imports. less money, more features---you do the math.

Model Reviewed: z-22 , 2.4 liter engine

Strength:

Very easy to get after market parts for it ( I.e proformance parts, head light covers etc..) peppy 2.4 engine, with upgraded air and exhaust system has real kick. Fully loaded very nice, moon roof and power windows, great factory sound, lots of trunk space for a compact car

Weakness:

Needs a tad more support in the seats, too much lateral movement, no t.c.s on/off switch (comes off when parking brake pulled for power turn though ;o) or shifted down into first or second gear ( on auto tranny ). A couple of rattles from rear quaters but over all nothing serious.

I paid 12,500 ( Canadian )for it, real good deal, the dealer sold me out on another car so he gave me this one for 3 grand under sticker price. If your young and don't want horrible insurance cost but wanna be able to turn your compact run-around into a tire burning, street fighter, for reasonably cheap and easy to get parts this is the car for you. I would recomend this for any younger person who can't afford gas or insurance on camro or vette.

Strength:

Good gas mileage, seats are comfortable. Not many other strengths.

Weakness:

Where to start...No head room, too many major and minor problems within the first 4 years, body rust, transmission is slow

I would not reccomend this car to anyone. Well before 100,000 miles I had so many problems: starter motor, engine coils, muffler, exhaust system, catalytic convertor, and a new horn. These are just the problems I can think of off the top of my head. I have driven a couple Chevy's and I never will again. They look nice in the beginning, but it comes down to terrible craftmanship. They are not reliable at all (I've been stranded 4 times). I would reccomend a Civic or Sentra in this price range.

I would never insult another car by comparing a Cavalier to it.

Model Reviewed: Z24

Strength:

Smooth automatic transmission. The 2.4L provided good acceleration for a compact.

Weakness:

Poor quality control and craftsmanship. Purchased new in 1997 the car immediately began to rattle excessively from the dash and headliner. Front suspension thumping began at 4000 miles. Waterpump went out at 40000 miles and fuel regulator began leaking at 38000 miles.

Having a GM employed relative at the time of purchase, I paid $14000 for the Z-24 which was well below invoice. However, I strongly recommend against the purchase of the cavalier based on quality and reliability issues only. True, you get alot for your money compared to imports of the same class but you're risking long term reliability. My advice; pay the extra $2000.00-$3000.00 for a Civic or Altima. It's worth the peace of mind. As for me and my wife; we decided to keep our 1990 Nissan Stanza with 153000 miles, sell our Z24 and purchase a Nissan XTERRA.

Strength:

Very good gas mileage. Very few maintenance checks needed. Large trunk space.

Weakness:

0-60 in 14.7 sec. Headliner on 91-93 models fall and debree comes flying out. Lots of body roll on fast turns.

5000$ I would not recommend the older models, but the newer ones 95 on up. The new Ford Focus is a lot better than the current Chevy Cavaliers, in handling, speed, and has a more sturdier chasis.

Strength:

16" alloy wheels, Fog lamps, Good AM/FM/CD Radio, pretty good acceleration and pick-up for a car this size

Weakness:

ABS locks too quickly, seats could be more suportive, noisy engine

Great sporty-looking compact car, with good amenities such as the alloy wheels, good radio, and a very good engine. Had it for 3 years and only had to change the front tires once. No other problems. This is a great low maintenance vehicle with lots of goodies for its price.

Strength:

Prety good looking car. Great car for the price. Decent engine. I would go for the Z24 over the 2.2 though.

Weakness:

It was weak cornering when I got it. I upgraded the rims to 15" and put better tires on it and it is great.
Noisy, but I have bad hearing anyway.
Rough ride on unsmooth road. It actually sounds like something is loose sometimes.

I am a college student who is torture on cars!! This car has taken everything I have thrown at it and still carrys me around without problems. I have about 60000 miles on it now and I expect another 60 before it dies!! I have pushed this thing through 1 foot of water down in LA a few years ago. I have been mud riding(sort of) many times. And more recently I encountered 15 inches of snow here in AR. It has taken it all without slowing down.
I recomend it for someone who needs a car that is dependable but not a Lexus. If you are looking for a luxury car, buy a Lexus.
I give it 4 stars b/c nothing is perfect.
