Very nice car overall. Has its problems with interior fit and finish and things like that. But a very reliable car has never gave me any major problems up until recently. Car starts but will not drive easily with out engine rpms going nuts and then dying and not starting right away. I think it has something to do with ignition control module. If anybody has anything to say about it E-mail me.

Brakes

Overall, the car has been very reliable. I haven't had to replace anything in the engine, yet and it's 6 years old, almost 100,000 miles on it. I will complain about the brakes. I replaced them in Fall 2002 and all they do now is squeal, grind and make this loud humming noise when I am almost at a stop. I replaced the brakes including rotors a 2nd time in Fall 2003, I am having the same problem. It's very frustrating because I don't know if there is something wrong with them or it's just hard brake pads like people tell me. The steering has always made a creeking noise and steered pretty hard when I'm going slow, like in a parking lot. I see that I just got a recall notice from GM for a recall on a bearing in the steering assembly. Maybe that's why it has made that noise? The dealer never knew what it was, they could never hear it (surprise, surprise). The cup holders both have broken, the slot that the visor fits into on the driver side fell out.

Strength:

fantastic highway vehicle (I expect 300,000+ of highway use) trong fuel efficent motor with high life expectancy, strong 4 speed overdrive tranmission(took a licking and kept on ticking) Galvanized metal body resists rust 4 wheel disc brakes for great stopping power.

Weakness:

As always, if you are not car-savy you should have a used car looked over by a good mechanic, before buying. rear brake calipers may often need attention on these vehicles, especially in areas with road salt. the "slides" often bind up. CUPHOLDER, if originally equipped, is in center armrest, but is usually gone.

Best car I have ever had this is a great car! 3.1 v6 Torquey motor with a lot of power, efficient 4 speed tranny, (I expect 300,000+ of highway use) always got 26 to 30 mpg. I recommend acquiring a Euro model(better suspension) with 15 or 16 inch rims, and 3.1 liter engine. (some base models have only a 3 speed, watch out of you like efficency) Avoid 4 cylinder(under powered, and usually blown with very low mileage) and 3.4 liter engines(weak timing belt gears) NOTE: most problems encountered by owners of these cars occur when the vehicle maintainence was neglected, change your oil and trans fluids, replace all your filters, and have your brakes maintained.

I bought this car new out of the dealership back in 1994. I have only 90,000 miles on it, have only changed the brakes, tires, alternator and battery. The car has no rust and has been garage kept for about 10 years. This car did me a lot of good.

Strength:

Interior room, reasonable power, reasonable gas mileage (low/mid 20's), ride, reliability, roomy trunk

Weakness:

turning, long skinny trunk, no interior trunk release, so-so seats

I bought the Lumina fie years ago because I received an additional $3,000 off the best price using my GM Master Card. I've owned Japanese mid-size cars for previous 20 years with great success. I must admit I've been very impressed with the Lumina's reliability (with the exception of the $800 gasket repair most people seem to experience at around 60K miles). The car does nothing exceptionally well, but for the price it does most things adequately. I'll shop GM again after this experience.

Strength:

This car does have power! I have gotten it up to 120 mph with no problem. Pretty reliable.

Weakness:

No drink holders. Transmission Slips. Brakes go fast.

Overall, I would say that this has been a decent car. I purchassed it four years ago with 118k miles on it. It had major problems with stalling out. The problem turned out to be a vaccuum hose between the throttle body and the map sensor. I replaced the stereo, speakers and put in a JVC and two JBL 12's in the huge trunk. After burning out my third alternator, i decided to turn the amp down. Gauges on the dash do odd things. Voltage is very irregular (b/w 9-14). The red light on the temp gaguge flickers on and off when stopped at a red light. The mileage odometer sticks (if i don't reset the trip meter every 200 miles, it stops adding miles!). This car leaks / burns about a half a quart of oil for every tank of gas (every 5 days) and my gas mileage seems to stink. I have had major transmission problems among them coolant clogs, overheating, and slipping. The transmission in the EURO differs from a standard lumina in that this one is completely controlled by the ECM. there is no kickdown linkage from the throttle body. My EURO will NOT shift into overdrive, instead, when you let off the gas to coast, it slips out of gear (the tach drops to about 1000 rpm evn at 60 mph) and then it makes a horrible 'thunk' as it tries to get back in gear when you step on the gas again. Brakes have always been an issue. As soon as i put a new set of pads of, thety start screeching again. Recently i have been having problems with the shocks and struts, creaking and making very load noises, althought they don't feel as if they are going bad. The cruise control hasn't worked from day one. I have no idea why. I have replaced the vaccuum lines and the cruise control mechanism. I am assuming the problem lies in my failing turn/wiper/cruise multi switch on the steering column. The turn signals must be held up or down to work, and the switch for the bright lights (pull forward) does not even click. Everything else has been pretty good though. The dash paneling is falling down, however all power accessories work, none of the doors, windows, or trunk leak water. I have gotten used to all these problems, and the car doesnt seem so bad anymore... It is a pretty good daily driver. It is comfy and it always starts up and goes where i need it to. the reliability overall is pretty good.

I recently bought my lumina from a public auction. Since my previous car was a taurus it makes the lumina seem like a luxury car. I did notice that the brakes are a little harder to push than most cars. Also the engine makes a funny tcking when it accelerates. Other than that it is a wonderful car to drive
