Strength:
Looks good, sporty with the spoiler and tinted windows, gets good mileage(20 miles to the gallon) and purchase price was affordable.
Weakness:
Leaves me stranded at least once a month. Unknown cause of not starting every 3 to 4 weeks. After sitting 12/14 hours it starts and runs fine and service dealers can't find any problem. My 2001 Chevy Malibu was purchased used as a Program Car. It had 24,000 miles at purchase and included a remaining warranty of 12,000. The car ran well up until 35,565 miles, at which point I went to get in it one day and it just wouldn't start; turned over but wouldn't start. Well, I thought, how lucky with 435 miles remaining on the warranty! BOY WAS I MISTAKEN!! My 2001 Malibu was towed into the nearest dealership and SUPPOSEDLY fixed (removed fuel tank and replaced fuel pump assy.) Now since that 1st incident 10-14-02 my supposedly fixed Malibu has done this same EXACT SAME thing 3 more times. The service dept. dealerships (2 different ones) have been unable to find what this problem is. By the time the car is towed in and looked at it starts fine. On 2 other occasions, after again being stranded without my 2001 Malibu able to start, I waited approx. 12-14 hours continually trying to start this car when finally out of the blue after 12+ hours it started and ran fine. Until again 3 weeks later, here we ago again, it turns over but just won't start. It's done this at least 4 times within 5 months. Now get this, the GM/Chevrolet service dealers claim that not only can't they find the problem, that when they do it won't be covered under warranty, unless it's the fuel pump again. HOW CONVENIENT!! To say this car is fixed while under warranty but 4 weeks and 2500 miles later it does it again, THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM, but now it's not under warranty. This Malibu has continued this SAME problem for the past 5 months. COME ON PEOPLE!! I don't want a car that MAY or MAY NOT start when I get in it. I'm paying not only my monthly note and insurance, I have to make sure I have $20 cab fee and $50 towing fee every time I want to use my car. I've started researching to see if this is a GM parts problem, MALIBU specific problem or just a lemon...Let's hear it. It's so discouraging to buy a car and have the Company you bought the car from shrug off the problem...."DON'T KNOW WHAT'S WRONG WITH IT". Well I can tell you, if you get a CHEVROLET MALIBU and it starts doing this....dump it quick or get your WALLET because it's going to cost you. Especially since they can't find anything wrong to fix it!!!!!! Hey maybe the CHEVY MALIBU is designed to only run sometimes, like GM/Chevrolet is only able to honor their product "SOMETIMES". Who knows, at this point it doesn't matter how much I like my car or how good it looks...if it doesn't run it's not an automobile(mode of transportation)!! |

Strength:
Body style, mine has a rear spoiler which i really like. The pickup is good, Bucket seats are nice, driver's side cupholder except if you make a sharp left turn.
Weakness:
ABS breaks on this car are HORRID! Everytime I have to make an emergency stop, no matter if it's dry or wet...the ABS breaks kick in and they chug like crazy. I've had my 2000 Malibu for 8 months...it had 34,600 miles on it when I got it and i guess should have been an indicator of things to come. The car was great when I got it..but then started driving back and forth to school. Had my first oil change in October and just had my second one done. In the span of 4 months I now need a pvc valve replacement, a new airfilter, my lower intake gasket needs to be fixed, my rear breaks need readjusting, and my front breaks need resurfacing. After reading these reviews I realize I now have all the common problems that go with the 00 Malibu. I like the style of the car and the interior space, as well as the pickup...but i can't afford to have new breaks put on every 4 months and have no clue if i'll be able to get what I owe on it for a tradein. |

Strength:
The Malibus strengths are its sound system, its acceleration power, its looks its afforablity, and well just about anything you can think of.
Weakness:
To tell you the ture just one for me. Its brakes i know i love this car but i do not love their brakes thats all. Well all those Malibu owners out there this is for you. I have had my Malibu for about 5 years now and it has not given me trouble like the others i have heard of here in this site. I know its not the most perfect car that it does have a few flaws but get real every car does. There is no perfect car out there and if there was everyone would have it. And for the people who said that s carmy was the best car. WHAT EVER i owned a carmy and that car gave me trouble. Thats why i bought the Malibu because that stupid car left me on the side of the road. I think the problem everyone is having is that you are buying a used Malibu. I bought mine brand new and i have not had to take it to the shop for any major repairs like the others. Look the bottom line is if you want a good easy car, that is affortable, well then go get you a Malibu. Similar Products Used: Carmy SUCKED, Galant's a good car and so are the new Altimas 2002 |

Strength:
Fairly spacious, comfortable seats, OK power until the transmission slips, lunges or engine stalls out
Weakness:
You name it. Resale value. An equivalent but smaller, less powered Honda civic when of the same year/mileage is worth twice what my car is. Mine was also more expensive than the civic. The car is junk and I can't afford to sell it. Don't buy an American car. Friends don't let friends buy an American car. They have always been terrible. My immediate family has bought about 8 GM/Ford cars/trucks. All were sold within 4 years due to excessive repairs. 1) My brakes would squeal whenever car was moving--except when I hit the brakes. 3 dealer visits, 3 pairs of brake pads and a rotor replacement later, it's fixed. 2)My alternator died twice within 2 years-replaced twice. 3) My AC just leaked out all the refrigerant twice, compressor, lines replaced twice. 4)Power steering fluid just spontaneously leaked out all over my garage, twice. My transmission has been causing my car to lunge mainly when shifting from 1st to 2nd. 5) My AC's fresh air/recirculate mode switches back and forth several times a minute with a nice irregular clicking sound. 6) Intake manifold replaced because my engine oil and coolant managed to mix. 7) RPMs drop and headlights dim in 3 sec intervals when idling-engine nearly dies. Resale bluebook value fell by almost exactly 50% in 2 years. Similar Products Used: Any oldsmobile, buick, or pontiac |

Strength:
roominess, features from automatic seat adjustment to CD player to remote key entry, value. Everything works. Also good for short people in that is has a short seat length and you can see over the steering wheel and touch the gas easily. You can't do that with a lot of other mid-size cars.
Weakness:
steering is not as easy as other cars,(that is stiffer) After reading the horrible reviews of the Malibu, I need to defend it. It is the greatest car in terms of value, features, roominess (trunk and fold down back). I'm on my second lease and ready for my third. Only problem is the gas gasket issue when the check engine light came on. The dealer knew right away and it was within warranty, so no charge. |

Strength:
Lots of interior room...
Weakness:
See review summary! Poor excuse of a car. GM, I expected more from you. After owning this car for 2 yrs, CHECK ENGINE light came on. 3 mechanics, 3 computerized diagnostic checks, and over $1300 later find out its a "new & improved" intake manifold gasket Chevy was testing on this model. One month after correcting that problem, it stalled on highway (on the way to Father's funeral!) and had to be towed! Problem #2 was a broken part on the fuel filter, which wasn't a "wear & tear" part (translate= should have NEVER broke). |

Strength:
The sound system is good. I like the daytime running lights.
Weakness:
Everything except the sound system and the daytime running lights. Not a good car. The car had 9,000 miles on it when I made the purchase (warning bells should have been going off!!). The car started to make bad sounds when shifting from 1st to second then second to third (Chevy can't find the problem). I had to replace the brake pads (I did it myself after the certified GM mechanic at the dealership couldn't find the broken - yes broken - not worn inner driver side brake pad. The heater switch didn't work. The seals around the rear tail lights are coming loose. The Firestone tires are very noisy. I have had other lower priced cars (new and used) that were much better than this one. I can't recommend the car. My 2000 Toyota Camry, which I purcahsed new, is a much better car. It has never been in the shop other than for routine maintenance. Similar Products Used: 2000 Toyota - Great Car! |

Strength:
Lots of interior space.
Weakness:
Everything!!!!!!!! I bought the car used with only 10k miles on it. That should have been the first sign. After I had it a year, it started overheating in traffic. Ever since then I have replaced the lower intake gaskets, a bunch of hoses in the cooling system, the thermostat housing gasket and the the thermostat, the radiator cap, the belt, the tension assembly (twice), the power steering pump, and the tires. I am still fighting to get the cooling system to work correctly. This car is a nightmare. I wish this car would just go away. My Dodge was a better car than this thing. Strength:
It goes fast.
Weakness:
Everything else. Horrible, Horrible, Horrible. The air doesn't work on 1 or 2. I just replaced the intake gasket. I've had to replace the alternator twice. I'm on my third set of tires and it only has 145,000 miles on it and I'm on my fifth set of brakes and third set of rotors. Now it's getting to where I can't shift it from park and it's ten times worse when it's cold. Also, it's wants to die after being started (this is a fairly new development) even though I have kept it well maintained ever since I got it. What is wrong with this vehicle and what is Chevy going to do about it? Similar Products Used: 1991 Buick Century (hated it too)` |
