Strength:

The seats recline nicely, and the power mirrors are swell. The ashtray opens and closes dependably also.

Weakness:

Read this site or edmunds.com or any review site on malibu..there all dead on,what amazes me is the push back to fix warranted problems by some dealers..not mine.

I bought our 98 malibu with 12k on it.I must say other then the rotors, brake pads, radio, a/c head unit, the tape player, the abs speed sensors, the window motors, the turn signals buzzing, and the intermittent abs warnings that go away 30 feet from the dealership when pulling in, that this is a really good car.

The only other really unrelable vehicle to compare it to would be my 93 explorer that was purchased new,and since been traded off...good luck who ever has it.

Its actually runs, but not too smoothly.

Weakness:

Brakes and rotor''s

This car is a true lemon. I purchased the car used in June of 2001 the rotors have already been replaced twice w/in 2 mos, along w/ new brake pads. Also, the blinkers stopped working and the tires are pathetic

Dealer network.

Weakness:

Dealer netowrk.

Ditto on nothing but problems with this car since I bought it! I even got the GM Option 1 purchase price and still believe it''s a rip off. It first broke down at 195 miles and required 2 days to fix. Subsequently I''ve had problems with brakes, electrical (all kinds), had the interior carpet replaced once, AC/Heat fan switch, every year the vent air intake must be cleaned out (even though I park in a garage the dealer insists I park under a tree), wheel bearings at 40,000 and now I find the front transmission pump is shot at 47,000 and looking at big $$$. I will be trading this POS for a Toyota in the near future.

Strength:

Smooth ride, decent gas milage, looks good.

Weakness:

Brakes, Brakes, Brakes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Plan on spending at least $500.00 per year on your brakes. Ridiculous.

Nice ride, looks good on the outside......just don't try to stop. Have had to replace front rotors and pads 3 times in a year, wheel speed sensor once, now the wheel speed sensor wiring harness is bad. Where does it end? I have read others reviews and feel that a class action suit against GM for failing to fix an obviously defective part (rotors) is in order...any lawyers out there? Don't bother with the 1-800 customer service #. They will read from a script and say.....there is nothing we can do about it.

Strength:

Powertrain --smooth and powerful and efficient V6/tranny (over 30MPG on the highway)
Features ---lot's of convience that my in-law's $24K Camry doesn't have
Size and asthetics --good looking and less boring than Camry or Accord.

Weakness:

I would prefer Goodyear Eagle tires. Traction control would be nice also.

At first, I was worried about buying a used Malibu. The 99 and older Malibus were know to be problematic (especially since it debuted in 97). I now have put 4k miles on mine (started at 15,500 from Carmax) nad have been on several trips. I am impressed with this car! It may not be as refined as some imports, but for 6-7k less, it's close enough! I have had NO problems whatsoever. Brakes are good, acceleration is impressive, all features and gizmos work great. It appears that Chevy finally got out the bugs from this new design (as evidenced by a "most improved award" for 2000 and literally 1/4 the number of TSBs). I drive this car hard and it hasn't complained yet. I highly recommend a 2000 or newer Malibu!

Toyota Camry --parts & labor on Japanese cars is outrageous! The Chevy has better seats.
97 Pontiac GTP --Malibu's not as fast, but is almost as much fun (it has very quick steering)

Strength:

Good value for a loaded car
Comfortable seats, good road trip car.

Weakness:

Brakes - the rotors were turned under warranty just after I bought the car, and they've made it to 47,000m (they're really grinding and vibrating now, will have to have them replaced ASAP)
Noisy vibration and rattles
Coolant light comes on intermittently
A/C shuts off intermittently, will switch from recirc to vent by itself

Cushy, comfy American car. I have been very lucky with the brakes, but I drive almost exclusively on the freeway. I have had one or two mechanical problems - all covered under warranty.

I bought this car mostly because of comfort (I'm very short and it offers good visibility w/o being too close to the steering wheel/airbag). I'm not expecting long-term mechanical reliability, but I've been pleasantly surprised so far. I'll be satisfied if it lasts another 3 years without more than $2000 in repairs/maintenance.

It's a good buy for those who want as many extras as they can get for the money, and will want a new car in 4 or 5 years. If you're looking for a car to hand down to your grandchildren, go with a honda or toyota.

This car has been a wonderful car! Iam very shock to here that your Malibu's have been giving yall problems. My 97 Malibu LS is perfect. The only major work I done to it was the Transmission fliud change and tune up at 100k. Right now I have 123k mile on here and time for a second change of tires. Down here in Mexico the tires used are excellent, their the same tires or quailty used on the Cadillac Catera's. The Gm dealer down here in Mexico City, says he has seen one Malibu have 156k miles with out one problem! I have seriously been thinking about buying a Catera, the dealer here " AUTOMORTIZ DE CENTRO" has great deals on them now but I love my Malibu, it was worth the money, I HIGHLY recommend this car! Well also I was informed by a dealer in San Antonio, TX that the Malibu's sold in the United States, have a Mexican made engine, and a American Transmission. Well my Malibi is the other way around, that werid. but if yall have any question fill free to e-mail me.

1998 Honda Accord, well my Malibi is alot more better, atleast my transmission did not go out at 12k miles. Plus Malibu has great craftsman ship behind it and more solid. "IT WILL BE THERE FOR YOU!"

Strength:

interior & trunk space, plenty of cup holders, sound system, GOES FAST!!! :)

Weakness:

gas mileage...that's all for now

So far I really haven't had many problems. I bought it from Enterprise Rental Cars, so it came with high miles (25k). Plus I put a LOT more on it!! I did replace the tires after one and a half years (went from Firestone to Yokohamas). It now has 57k miles on it & I just replaced the rotars & brake pads for the first time. I have no clue what Enterprise had done on it before, but I'm sure they kept up on everything. I LOVE this car!!! It's been very dependable!! It does go through the gas, but not NEARLY as expensive as the '85 Suburban was (it was left over after my mom got her van).
Tip: buy your own parts at Auto Zone & have a mech. do the work!! It's MUCH cheaper this way!!!!
