DO NOT BUT THIS CAR!!!!!
Whoever says this car is good should be beaten!!!!
I've had this car since June of 98 and I regret ever buying it! I've had it in the shop so many times, they reserved a parking space for me!!
I had always bought Chevys, but this will be my last one unless I buy a Silverado, which is ridiculously over priced. I thougt I was the only one with problems like this, but I see that I am not alone. If you want to throw your money away, give it to me instead. As soon as I am finished paying it, I am having a "Burn the Malibu" Party. I will let people come with bats and let them have their way with the car. After the car is completely trashed, we will pour gasoline all over it and light it up. If anyone wants to join the fun, let me know. Again, I WARN YOU, DO NOT BUY THIS CAR!!!!! GM has lost another loyal customer. I would give it no stars if I were allowed.

Strength:

I love this car! As a service tech, this is the money maker. I enjoy repairing this car. It is very easy to work on and has plenty of "service concerns"

Weakness:

Chevrolet needs to sell more, so that I can make more cash

I can blast on a set of rotors in no time, replace a leaking intake gasket in a heartbeat! A/C controller or steering rack no big deal! Reconnect that annoying radio wire or remove the fuel tank to replace the inoperative fuel pump before you could yell out "this stinks"! Replace noisey suspension componets and tail lite sockets in a blink! I AM SUPER TECH! I dont understand why this car has such a low rating, why can't you peaple just learn to love your mechanic??

Strength:

Spacious, dependable, affordable, nice car, great on gas!

Weakness:

I purchased my first Malibu back in 1998. After 1 1/2 years I decided to trade it in (not because of any mechanical default, just for change) for a 1999 Chevy Blazer. After having the Blazer for only 1 year, I can't tell you how much I regretted trading the Malibu. The Blazer did not have near the room or comfort of the Malibu, and the price of the Blazer was twice the amount. I sold the Blazer and now I am back to a Malibu, this time a 1999 model. I love it!! I never had any problems with my first one and so far everything is Great on my second one. You have to remember that cars are machines and like any machine, they can break. It doesn't matter what kind of car you buy, or how much you pay for it. There are no guarantees. Look up any other car on the internet and there will be someone out there that was not satisfied with that purchase. I would definetly recommend this car!

BRAKES & ROTORS

I have only 22,600 miles on this car. I have had the brakes and rotors replaced now, twice in 5 months. The Dealership, after being pushed, finally admitted that GM has a problem they have yet to fix. They tried to re-design the rotors. They put the RE-DESIGNED rotors on my Malibu 5 months ago, and I just had them replaced again yesterday. They told me that the next time I would be charged, because they have already replaced them twice now free of charge! GM should not continue to sell a known defected product.

Strength:

It looks great. Very roomy and comfortable. Has very reasonable acceleration. Smooth ride.

Weakness:

Haven't found any yet.

I think this car is fantastic. I look out over these other reviews, and I'm forced to ask myself, "What planet are these people living on?" I see many reviews that say the Malibu is terrible. My car is a very smooth ride and is comfortable. I have not had a single problem with it, engine or otherwise. I love everything about this car, it's a damn good Chevy Product. If you have a small family, I'd recomend buying one.

Where do you start with something like this???

DO NOT BUY THIS CAR!!! I have had my car in about the brakes 2 times so far. The dealer told me they don't know what's the matter.(I have a feeling after reading this page that I know what to ask them about when I take it in this time.) The first problem was a wire disconnect from the antenna to the radio and I had it fixed 3 times and finnally told them to tape it together to make sure it stays. Then the car would sometimes rev and not go. I had it into the dealer 4 times for this and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. I finally called chevy and told them I didn't want it back until it was fixed because it was dangerous. The very same day they found something wrong with the transmission.(I told them I thought that was the problem!) Now the car has started to have a clunk, clunk, clunk when pulling out on a hill. I'm dropping it off tomorrow to hopefully find what is wrong. This is my first new car and I was looking forward to not having to worry about breaking down with my kids in the car. I was looking for some peace of mind and all I wish now is that I had just kept my old car. At least I wouldn't have payments to make while I worried.

Strength:

trunk space, driver side cup holder, leg room

Weakness:

crappy radio/antenna (I lose stations all the time)

I bought mine in April of 98. I have almost 48k on it and I haven't had any problems with it yet. I thought I did at one point because I couldn't understand why it would half start, quit, and then I'd have to wait. Then, I realized it was the 'engine security' system. That would be my only complaint. Sometimes I'm in a hurry and I might not completely turn the engine over and so I have to wait 10 minutes for it to reset itself. That's annoying as heck. I didn't realize that people have had so many problems with it. My dad works at a Napa and knows a lot of mechanics and nobody mentions to him about how bad it is. Of course, he may not ask either. (Yes, I probably would have bought an import, but I am a student who needed a lot of space to carry my stuff and I got more car for less money.) I still get the rated MPG too. Makes me nervous about what may happen. Don't a lot of makers use cheap parts anyways?

Strength:

Roomy inside, big trunk space, style, good pickup

Weakness:

gas hog, brakes, standard am/fm cassette, driver side cup holder-not deep enough(I've spilt too many drinks from putting them in there. One left or right turn and your cup will be in your lap.), resale value(horrible)

This May will mark one year with this car. I purchased the car from Enterprise Rent a car in May of 2000. It had 30,000 miles. I haven't had any real major problems with the car. The few things that I did notice is it goes through brakes very frequently, just like the previous car I had, the Pontiac Grand Am. From almost the time I bought it I have smelt a burning smell like oil, but I haven't taken it in to get looked at because the car has been running with no problems. I am at 56,000 miles now. I don't now exactly what repairs and/or maintenance were done when it was with Enterprise but I'm sure it was maintained. When I bought it I could tell the difference in power between the V6 and my previous V4 engine. I like the power and pickup it has, but then it eats up the gas like crazy. It's made out of a lot of plastic. I haven't noticed the noisy engine like most of the other review but that may be because I listen to my music pretty loud.

My roommate backed into my bumper with the bumper of her car. Mine was caved in and on hers you couldn't even tell anything happened. (She has a 1996 Accord.) Luckily it was just in the driveway and no one rear-ended me. It is a good car for the money, but if I could afford to buy the Camry, Accord or Maxima I would rather have any of those. You get what you pay for. It's good if you are on a budget or for teenagers. It's too bad that american cars have to be so cheaply made and have no resale value.

Strength:

Roomy, Child proof windows & door locks in rear are wonderful with kids. Cup holders in rear for passengers are a plus.

Weakness:

BRAKES!!! I have replaced the brakes 3 times in the last 3 years & am in need of it again now! Rotors are warped & have to be replaced too. Has Electrical problems... Power windows & door locks have a mind of their own & work only when 'they' want to! Gas mileage is terrible. Glove compartment hinge broke, cup holder in front broke, radio won't pick up hardly anything, Front speakers busted. Heater knob fell off. Anti-Freeze leaks out. Engine makes terrible ticking sound when cold. Eats tires, no matter how many times you get it aligned. Biggest complaint is the BRAKES though, am tired of replacing them so often!!!

Being a very satisfied, previous owner of a Chevy mini-van, 2 Chevy Trucks, and several cars made by Chevrolet... I bought this car thinking I was getting a roomy, sporty looking, dependable little family car that would make me proud & wouldn't leave me sitting on the side of the road with my two children... Boy, Was I wrong! I love the body style & the room this car holds, but the rest of it is a disappointment!

Brakes!!! Rotors, Calipers, Pads, Rear Drum Cylinders

I bought the Car in June, Had the Rotors replaced right away after having some shaking problems, it seemed to be fixed. February, 10,000 miles later, I brought the car into the Chevrolet dealer in Gainesville, FL after having strange brake noises. They told me I needed new rotors and nothing else was wrong. How could 1 set of brake pads wear out Rotors? I took it somewhere else where I was told that the Calipers were sticking, causing the quick deterioratin of the rotors. $600 later I'm stopping ok for now.

The suspension seems loose. I get a creaking noise every time I hit a bump.

Other than the Brakes and the Suspension the car is great. I guess you shouldn't buy genuine GM parts when replacing these things. Go ahead an buy better quality after market parts, then you won't be replacing them every few thousand miles like some of these other people.
