I was foolish to trade my 1995 Lumina in ofr the 2000 malibu. Shortly after owning the car, my tie-rod broke. I had that fixed by tmy nearest chevy dealer. Shortly thereafter my tie rod snapped while i was driving to work causing me to loose control of my car into a tree. After being fixed again, when i was pulling into my driveway after work, the car explodes. I will never reccomend this car! I now drive a blazer and am a little bit happier. But will never drive another chevy,

Low price - you get what you pay for

Weakness:

Not mechanically sound. I do not think this vehicle will stand the test of time.

At 350 miles, the car overheated. At 1300, the rear suspension needed to be repaired. At 2000, the A/C failed, the drivers seat track lifted off the floor, and the brakes gave out. 2100, the brake rotors when AGAIN. Through the life of the vehicle, there has been a constant vibration through the floor and steering column. I was told by the dealer on three occasions that it was 'normal road vibration'. Yesterday I demonstrated that it occurs while the vehicle is parked and the engine is brought to 2000-2500 RPM...must be parking lot vibration. Two weeks ago, the power steering failed while I was 40 miles from home. The dealer replaced the pump. You'll never guess what happened this morning...yep, I lost the steering on the way to work (on the highway)! Needless to say, I am exploring my legal rights.

My brother-in-law bought the exact same car from the same dealer 3 days after I did. He has not experienced any problems. I have rented a Malibu while traveling on several occasions...that's what convinced me to buy it. It was always an impressive ride. BOTTOM LINE - CAVEAT EMPTOR - IT'S A CRAP SHOOT WITH THIS AUTOMOBILE

A mechanic (who asked to remain anonymous) at my dealer told me that the braking problem effects 40% of 2000 Malibus. I hope the '01 model is a vast improvement.

Strength:

comfortable, roomy enough for 2 baby car seats and a person in the back, good size trunk, nice interior, peppy V6

Weakness:

ALOT. Replaced brake pads after 44,000 miles; had some horn relay replaced because the horn would go off by itself, the horn now only works in Park with your foot off the brake(and sometimes in reverse); had another chip replaced because the door chime would go off whenever the doors were opened(whether or not the key was in the ignition);ignition switch replaced, check engine light comes on and off for no reason; brake light on and off for no reason; AC turns itself on and off; switches between 'vent' and 'recirculate' by itself; AC needs recharged after only 2 summers. Replaced stock tires at 38,000 miles bacause they were bald. The warranty doesn't last long enough to cover the stupid little things that go wrong and who has time to keep going back to the shop?

I would not recommend this car. Although it seems to be a good car for the price, the problems far outweigh the few good things you do find in this car. I use this car to commute back and forth to work 400 miles a week and keep up with all maintainance schedules and do not drive like a maniac. Although it has been reliable(no stalls or no-starts) , these little annoyances build up and makes you wonder: what else is going to go wrong with my car, and is it going to be major this time?

Strength:

Roomy and comfortable. I don't feel like I'm sitting on the ground. Sporty looking (with the spoiler). The V6 has enough power to get up and go when passing. I got mine loaded with leather, sunroof, and power for under $20,000.

Weakness:

I was surprised the gas tank doesn't lock. Since I've only just recently purchased, I haven't noticed anything else.

If you want a roomy car with all the options and don't have a lot of money to spend, take the Malibu for a test drive. I am a little nervous about the negative reviews, but most were on the older models. I believe if you take care of a car, it will last longer and have fewer repairs. This includes regular oil changes and maintenance to prevent serious problems down the road.

Roomy trunk, comfortable seats

Weakness:

Everything under the hood !

I should have known when the check engine light came on at 1500 miles. That only took four trips to the dealer to find the problem- they replaced the entire EVAP system. Since then have had the following replaced (usually it worked out everytime had the oil changed had a list for the dealer):
-intake manifold gasket(puddled oil on transmission case)
-Both front spindles
-Rack and pinnon unit, both upper and lower control arms, struts and mounts, both front spindles, power streeing pump and resevoir.
-abs sensors
-ignition switch
-radio, antenna
-starter
-serp. belt
-numerous other sensors that made the check engine light go on.
I'm sure I'm forgetting something. Now you would think that after having the entire front end replaced that it wouldn't creak and clunk, but at 37,000 miles it all started again. I just hope it will last till I get another vehicle. Maybe a Honda.....

Too many repairs for a young car.

DO NOT BUY THIS CAR.

I bought my 1997 Chevrolet Malibu in January 1997. As of September 2000 it has almost 45,000 miles on it.

This car's problems have included:

1. Control bushings on front wheels replaced - also squeaks in back but I haven't gotten that fixed yet
2. PCM (Programmable Control Module) replaced - stalled at a busy intersection during rush hour
3. Fuel pump replaced - had problems stalling
4. Passenger side windshield needed re-sealing due to whistling noise when driving on highway - sounded like a siren
5. Steering wheel replaced because buttons popped out - a nuisance
6. Stereo speaker covers replaced because they were warped - another nuisance
7. Battery replaced - This one was not bad.
8. Engine coolant leak in intake gasket fixed - very costly to repair.
9. Front brake pads and rotors replaced.

I've religiously changed the oil and rotated the tires on this car, and I am a cautious driver...have not abused this car in any way. However, it has not treated me very well in return.

Don't buy this car unless you love to visit the repair shop every month or so.

Strength:

Standard V6 engine, ABS and automatic transmission, very quiet cabin, good pick up, really roomy.

Weakness:

Brake sucks, need service if you not done yet.

Definitely better than Honda Accord and Toyota Camery if you are talking about the 1999 & 2000 models which has standard V6 engine and automatic transmission.
I paid $11.5K for the 1999 Malibu base sedan with power everything. It had 32K miles on it, but never seen any problems. Smooth, powerful, and comfortable and roomy. Five stars!!!
How much the '99 V6 model Accord and Camery will cost you, you kidding me, right?
I saw some Canadian guys complaining a lot, first you need to look at the engine oil, you are not living in Florida, got it?
And some guys are complaining about the brakes, get it done as soon as possible, that's not a recall, but it is a real problem, GM has already fixed it, you need to re-service it.
A little suggestion if you just bought a 2nd hand Malibu: 1)Use synthetic motor oil. 2) Clean injector by gas treatment. 3)PTFE Oil Additives is still helpful to American cars, but not European luxury ones, it will clog their filters.

V6, good pick up, cruises nice on the highway, roomy, lots of toys for the price, looks good-like the styling (hate chrome), handles better than other cars i drove.

Weakness:

nothing so far, it will go in for the pre-warranty end inspection soon, my friend's father the service manager has told me he has seen few problems with these cars, he did say the front end was noisy on some.

for the price i paid, it is my first car, i was a truck guy, i like it. i have not noticed the problems that other people have complained about. i think if you want a mid-size for a pretty low price, it beats the dodge and the ford. if you want to drive something hard, spend more money and get something upscale and sporty. remember this is a family car. not a race car and it will treat you well. I would have liked to have had an extra 10 grand to spend as i did like the Impala, but i didn't and i am satisfied with the Malibu.

The ammount of times I've had it in the shop

I paid 17,200 CDN, for this car in April 99, I have had nothing but problems since then, I was really looking forward to the much talked about relyablity of the 3.1 litre GM engine. It turned out to sound like a pop can with a couple of gravel stones rolling around in it.

The transmission isn't a problem.

I've had a heater fan resistor kit put in it cause my fan wouldn't work on settings 1-3

I've had the oil pan gasket replaced
I've had a "major oil leak" fixed on the left side of the engine
I've had the power steering rack replaced
my tail/brake lights are still intermittenent after the shop replaced a computer board
I've had the car in twice for the ABS light coming on.. now i just ignore it
I've replaced the front rotors and pads...... the rotors were so warped it was undrivable.... I don't even drive the car hard.
I'm seriously considering selling it for whatever I can get for it.
The sad thing is that I still have many years before it is paid off.

Strength:

The 3.1 V6 has nice pick-up and the Automatic Tone Control audio system is awesome. As well as the fog lights, automatic transmission, spoiler, and overall good gas mileage

Weakness:

I would like to have low-speed traction control. But, the lower control arms make a very bad knocking on any bump. And also worry that something else is wrong-when accelerating even only into overdrive it jerks the wheel to the left then the right.

I paid about 12,000 for it used and with the sport package and LS decor I think it is worth it. Except for the problems from above it is a very nice car and I would reccomend it. I am 17 years old and still in high school and I surprise all of the Mustangs, Integras, and Grand Prix's.
