Strength:

Very POWERFUL!! 3.4 Twin Dual Overhead Cam.

Weakness:

It leaks oil out of the distributor o-ring (about a 6 hour job to fix). It's a little hard on gas but it's probably the way I drive.

I have had some problems with this car but I would still buy another. I have not had a problem with warping the brake rotors like other people since I know how to drive. This car has taken me where I need to go and in style. I bought the car with 132,000 miles on it and only put in about $500 in it during the last year. I only had to replace the brakes, water pump, struts and serpentine belt. I would recommend this car to anybody who knows how to fix cars and knows quality when they see it. I will only buy General Motors cars since they are reliable and cost efficient.

Strength:

Looks & Price (while NEW). Extended Warranty really pays for itself.

Weakness:

Heavy car, Loud road noise, Lots of time in the shop - something always breaking. Poor paint & Clear coat flakes. NOT Dent resistant at all! Heavy Doors that if swung open hard will bend and rub the fenders. Poorly manufactured.

I have had nothing but problems with this car since I bought it brand new. I've had 4 alternators, brakes keep warping, passenger strut has rattled since day one but refuse to fix it as it functions, the bar behind the drivers/passenger windows has a coating that has been replaced about 6 times before I gave up (keeps bubbling up), the car had to be fully repainted after 6 weeks of driving & the manufacturer paid for it (paint started flaking in spots all over), clear coat started to come off after two years even though I had paint protection package added, silver trim ring on front bumper flakes silver after about 6 months and was replaced about 5 times, my door locks have went out 4 different occassions, the bars on the inside of the door that controls opening has broken twice, the passenger window controls have went out twice, the doors are so heavy that after a good gust of wind catches them you have to have them adjusted and repainted due to rubbing, the trunk lid sticks, the hood latch will not latch on occassion, carpet was replaced after about 1.5 years because it was falling out and had complete bare spots, the vehicle idles from 1500 - 3500 RPM in Neutral, from a complete stop the car may not accelerate very quickly as it's still stuck in a higher gear and will finally shift down, the ac compressor has went out, and the list goes on and on. Did I mention that this car has been in the shop alot? Trying to get this car repaired CORRECTLY is difficult too. As soon as something gets fixed, something else is broken. Sometimes what's broken next was at the hands of the manufacturer's technician, i.e. several times they broke off the siren for my after market alarm. The windshield is expensive to replace and it only took a small rock being thrown up onto the glass to break it on TWO different occassions. The car has LOTS of road noise even with the undercoating and sound proofing. Also the doors dent extremely easy. This car is not made very well. The plastic piece around the gear shifter will occassionally pop up and jam the shifter so that you can't shift (try finding this one out after you have backed out in the road & can't shift into drive). The compartment lid for the compartment between the seats broke off. The passenger air vent fell apart and the replacement is so stiff you can't adjust it. The car smells real musky when you turn on the AC due to the moisture from the AC being left in the vents. The windshield will fog up if you place the AC on the bi-level selection. Also, the engine shuts off at 107 MPH. I've had my car since 1998 and have placed 96,000 miles on it. I have a 75,000 extended warranty that more than paid for itself. I'm now looking to replace this car but it won't be replaced with a CHEVY!

Looks great. Very good gas milage. Interior Room.

Weakness:

MAINTENANCE. This is by far the worse New car I've ever owned.

My main reason for writing this review is to let consumers know the problems I've had with the 2002 Monte Carlo SS. 1. The Rotors had to be replaced at less than TWO years($444). 2. Less than a year later(Now 7/23/04) the Rotors need to be resurfaced or replace again. 3. The Steering shaft was rattling and had to have a kit put on, I forgot the price of that but it was over($150). 4. The battery died at around 39K miles, with no warning($280), including towing. I have owned 4 Hyundais(before they started getting quality awards)and I never had these types and this many problems. Some of them I owned for 6yrs. GM's customer service was absolutely unwilling to pay for the rotors, saying they were wear items. I kept explaining to her that they were WARPED and not worn. She would budge. My point here is that GM is not willing to stand behind their product. The Steering Shaft Kit they are willing to pay for. I test drove another because of the $4000 rebates going right now. That one was already PULSATING, that's straight from the factory, it had 6 miles on it.

My wife bought a 2002 Grand Am after I bought the Monte Carlo. She has had the same Rotor/Steering Shaft problems that I have. This is not just a Chevrolet problem, it's obviously a GM problem. We are both considering trading them both in.

Strength:

- power and smoothness of engine - cabin and interior appointments - rock solid reliability - sex machine - the chicks dig this car!

Weakness:

- needs a fuel warning light badly - GM clear coat began peeling a little in places after 5 years - this should not happen - GM service was staffed by morons; have yet to find an honest dealer service shop (that goes double for Nissan)

This was the best car I ever owned. Hit a deer and wrote it off last week :o( But the car saved my life - hit a rock wall at 60MPH and escaped uninjured. All the crumple zones crumpled, and the passenger compartment was totally intact. Amazing. Love the power and smoothness of this car. Handles very well for a big domestic. Huge, comfy back seat. Great cabin with lots of nifty lights and buttons that make it feel like a cockpit. Especially like the steering wheel audio controls and auto-lights. Lots of room in there for long trips. Two stupid things on my car - no fuel light and no light in the massive trunk. Minor things, but you should be aware. I ran out of gas a few times before I figured it out! There are warning lights for everything else...weird. The 3.8L engine ROCKS. I have dusted so many rice rockets its not even funny. They dont expect it from such a big car! Every independent mechanic that has changed my oil has told me this is a great engine and that I can expect a life of at least a quarter million miles. Stay away from 3.4L which has a bad rep - besides, you will want the cushy z34 or SS version - trust me. These cars depreciate fast, so they are a great deal. More than a brand new Maxima for 1/3 the cost, and I prefer the torpedo like appearance of the Monty. Also, was surprised at how GOOD the mileage was. Highway cruising matched the fuel consumption of my Sentra SE; I guess because the big engine is not working hard. It is worse in the city, but the higher consumption is definitely neglibile.

Strength:

For a 3.1L engine, it's VERY peppy. Easily Modified with custom parts not many aftermarket parts available Strong construction #1 strength: Beats the heck out of any Civic.

Weakness:

Heavy. Stock sound system only 200 watts. Trunk VERY deep, difficult to get small things out.

The car has nearly 68,000 miles on it and is still running strong. The car is easily modified, even easier to drive. I have the LS, which is a relatively small 3.1 liter V6 engine. I can go 0-60 quite fast, and the passing gear is amazing. With the exhaust, intake, and filter modifications I made, I'm getting nearly 31 miles to the gallon under normal driving scenarios. A stock LS would get about 25 MPG. It is a very safe car, strong, and reliable. The only problem I've had so far was with one of my modifications. The factory installed parts work in perfect harmony with this car to create a pure driving pleasure. It's quiet, even so much, in fact, that my girlfriend's cousin thought it was an electric car. The interior is roomy, the trunk can sleep a family of four, and the overall look to the car is sporty, yet luxurious. I don't know weather to race it or to show it. Both, if you ask me. If you're getting a used car, definitely get a 96-99 Monte Carlo LS for economy, or the Z34 for power. Your choice.

Everything else

It has the looks, eats your pocket book. Got 4 years warranty at a cost of 3000, worth every penny on this "fixer upper". Timing belts, altenator, brakes front and back (twice), fuel system, struts, electrical, anything you can think of has gone wrong. Always do oil changes every 3,000 miles, changed trans fuild, flushed fuel system, did tune up (800.00 hit), baby it. Has a mind of its own. Of course half of the repairs where not covered by my "bumper to bumper we will remidy any problems with your vehicle sir". Right now its in the shop getting the alternator fixed with 3.5 hours of labour to change. Back brakes rotor warped. Whoever designed this car should be working in Siberia by now and I hope its cold because I have been stranded in minus 30 with this "automobile". Anyone thinking of buying this model shouldn't. 3.4 L is a terrible motor to repair. Only thing that hasn't broken (knock on wood) is the cigarette lighter. One more month of warranty left, then the for sale sign goes on it.

Plastic interior cheap and flaking. Back seat is roomy but has a terrible entry, the front seat will not stay up unless someone holds it.

This is my first new car, and absolutely love the ride of it and the look. Very roomy car but have had a couple issues with the interior on the console of the armrest and the stereo peeling. I had both replaced and now I noticed it doing it again in a different spot. I have only had the vehicle for 17 months and haven't used any chemicals on it after it was replaced just to make sure that didn't do it.

I had to take to back to the dealership several times for the stero until finally they replaced it with a new one. Several times back for the ingination not turning over with the key. Several times back for the siginal light not working. I had to stop turn off the care and restart the car to get it to work. Several times back to the dealship for a noise in the brakes and steering colum. After several times the found the problem. Several times back for the "security" light coming on. Finally it was fixed. These were all covered under warrenty At 39000 miles, I had to pay 325.00 for repaires of an EGR Valve, and Oil pressure sensor. I did not purchase the extended warrenty.

I like the looks and the overall performance of the car. I do wish I had checked it out a little more. I've had a lot of issues with the quality of the auto.
