Strength:

I like the looks of the car and the smooth ride.

Weakness:

Road Noise.
Low Ground Effects.

Overall, I love my avenger. I have had it for 5 years and in 5 years the only thing I have replaced is the battery, one set of brakes, and the EGR valve. The car has 101,000 miles.
However, now I am having some shifting problems. I have an automatic, and when the car shifts into 4th gear, it hesitates. Almost like you are in a standard going up hill and you haven't down shifted. This only happens with 4th gear. If I take off faster that usual, I don't have the problem.
The dealer doesn't know what is wrong with the car, so If anyone has experienced this, I would love the hear thier story. You can reach me @ demelton@fishelco.com.
Thanks.

LOOKS PUT YOU IN MIND OF THE VIPER. THE PRICE OF THE CAR IS AFFORDABLE AND WITHIN MY AUSTERITY BUDGET.

Weakness:

THE PERFORMANCE IS BRUTALLY DISAPPOINTING TO SAY THE LEAST. WHAT WAS DODGE THINKING TO MAKE SUCH A SLOW AND MEAGER POWERPLANT.

IM SO DISAPPOINTED WITH THE AVENGER'S PERFORMANCE I HAVE NOTHING FURTHER TO SAY!!!!!

Strength:

Good looks, Handles well, Sun roof, Infinity sound system, Back seat big enough for 2 adults, 60/40 fold down rear seats, fun to drive.

Weakness:

V6 could use more power, No manual transmission available with the V6, wide turning radius for a sports coupe. Car goes through disc brakes fast. Hard to find replacement tires (215/50R17) that don't bust your budget.

Overall the Avenger is a good car. Outside of replacing disc brakes pads frequently, reliability has been good after 63,000 miles. It could use more power, and the turning radius could be improved (my wife's 1996 Grand Prix has a tighter turning radius).

My one big gripe is that no manual transmission is available with the V6. This problem is not unique to Dodge. Pontiac does the same thing with the new Grand Am. Go figure...

Tire replacement is a problem if you have the 17" rims. You can't find too may stores that handle tires for this thing for less then about $160/tire. I'm still running on the original Goodyear RSAs.

Strength:

Impressive styling and great handling. I really like the bold exterior styling and classy interior. Nice sound system that doesn't distort. Power sunroof is a plus (and it doesn't leak)!

Weakness:

Tends to leak inside both doors where weatherstripping ends. Roadnoise. Minimal lighting/accessories in back seat for passengers.

If you're looking for a quick, sporty car with bold styling, comfortable interior, at a fair price the Avenger is for you. I'm a mother of two, and the sliding passenger seat is convenient when letting children in and out of the back seat. Four adults can fit comfortably, five if necessary.

Sportier than the Mitsubishi Eclipse/Eagle Talon and a little larger, more intimidating.

Strength:

Great Styling, handleing, sound system, lots of trunk space, nice winter performance, V6 gets great gas mileage

Weakness:

I'm planning on selling my Avenger because of the lack of performance from the Mitsubishi built 2.5L V6. Replaced the tranny at 7000 miles. High pitched whine from transmission at highway speeds. Short life on brake pads and rotors, replaced both at 17,000 miles. At 6'3'', my right knee tends to bang the right console.

I paid 18000 dollars for an ES in 1997. Loaded with every option but leather and a sunroof. The Avenger is great for any auto enthusiast who doesnt put priority on performance. Avenger V6 power is adequate at most.
The avenger is a great starter car , and should not have been discontinued. I would keep my ES if it had the new Stratus R/T powerplant. I think the styling FAR outdoes the new Stratus.

Strength:

The car looks beautiful. It handles spot on. Long highway driving is fun, and dosen't require those tiny steering corrections to hold center lane. Perfect size interior. The environment for the driver is perfect. Excellent highway mileage at 37 mpg. City at 25.

Weakness:

Kinda weak engine ( but I don't care ) The steering wheel is too close to my legs. Everything is isolated for the driver. The passenger has to angle himself to use the radio. ( I don't care ) Paint finish is sensitive.

I love the car, and plan to keep it around to abuse when I get my new Stratus R/T Coupe. Driving position, handling / steering, sterio, all make for an excellent car. I would deffinately recommend it. Mine is a 95 model 4 cyl., and I've had no problems with it except for break pads wearing out. If your a teenager looking for a cool looking sport coupe but cannot afford a new car, get a used Avenger.

Strength:

Great gas mileage, fairly comfortable ride, and has been a quality product. It also performs well in the snow which was surprising. It has been the best car I have ever owned. 4 cyl engine and 5 speed tran top notch.

Weakness:

Car tends to get irritable when the temp gets below zero (hard to start, doors do not close smoothly, etc.) The "tilt wheel" steering is not much of an option since when engaged it is either sitting on my lap or just barely high enough to steer. The front speakers in the doors do not help much unless your shins can hear.

Car was in shop for two weeks once because of the check engine light wouldn't go off. Car was out of warranty and dealer finally resorted to calling engineers in Michigan to fix problem, but they gave me a Caravan to drive and didn't charge me anything.

Brakes, of course, are too small for the car and tend to wear out quickly (a common theme for Avenger owners).

Paid about 16,000 for this car. I bought it on the spur of the moment, and was initially disappointed that I didn't get the V6. Over time, though, I was glad that I got the 4 cyl because of the great gas mileage.

Very dependable car that has only been in the shop once for non routine maintenance.

Strength:

Wonderful styling;Look at that front end and you'll see the Viper influence, roomy interior front and back, rigid handling, intuitive controls, responsive engine over 3500 rpm, nice exhaust note.

Weakness:

Lukewarm in the thrust department (from a dead stop), poorly designed insofar as keeping the interior DRY, too much road noise.

I got this Avenger brand new as a 99 leftover. I like this car. It is nowhere near the Mustang or Camaro in terms of performance, but is much more comfortable to drive and is a much better styled car. The Infinty stereo is great with cassette, CD, and 8 speakers. This car is more roomy than the Monte Carlo, Solara, Mustang, and Camaro in the back seat, and has a bigger trunk to boot. I have the 2.5 V6 with the auto 4 speed. It won't amaze you if you try to take off from a stop light, but the transmission is smooth and crisp. Stomp the pedal at 60 and the Avenger shows its teeth. Watch it, or you'll be doing 100 in no time. So far top speed wise I've coaxed it up around 130. The brakes are adequate, spend the money on the 4 wheel disc package; it's worth it. The interior noise is a little more than desired, but the engine has an attractive growly note that is nicely muted. Overall, if I wanted to blow people off the line, I'd buy the Mustang. But beyond that, this is a much more refined car.

While the Ford Mustang is considerably more powerful, it is also much less comfortable, and has virtually no back seat. Did I mention the new Mustangs look like a cross between a 92 Honda CRX and a 2000 Cavalier with a front body kit on it?

Strength:

The aggressive styling turns heads and since it is not a well known car people tend to ask you about it. Handling is great, holds turns and curves great and the ride is smooth...

Weakness:

The reason I am selling mine - Power, it just doesn't really have any. I wonder what happened between the 94 IROC Avenger with a V-8 and rear wheel drive and the 95 production with the I-4 or V-6 and front wheel drive. Brakes - I have had a ton of problems with my brakes. I have had it for 80,000 miles and had the rotors and pads replaced 5 times. A few other minor things were, rattling of the sunroof shield, the weather stripping under the windows spotting up, once in a long time it just wouldn't get out of 2nd gear? What was up with that?

My Avenger cost me $12,000 when it was one year old. I think I got a really good deal on it. I have not had to do much maintanance, other than the brakes. The gas milage has been about 28-30 around town and 33-35 on the highway. That is with the I-4 and an automatic.

Dodge had the makings of a great sports car and just let it drop. The avenger is a really nice car and if you are looking for a fairly inexpensive car that is fairly unique and runs well, I would suggest it, but if you are looking for high performance and great acceleration look elsewhere.

Strength:

I like the sporty look and interior space.

Weakness:

MANY!1) Engine does not have great pickup
2)Had many problems with the car. it has 73,000 miles now and I had to replace my water pump, AC compressor ($1600). Also I had Electrical problems, Anti Lock brake system needs replacment which cost over $1500. Radiator is leaking and Trans is leaking. Basically the powertrain is totally unreliable.
Also the car has VERY loud interior noise 75 dba @ 70 MPH.
Quality of interior finish is cheap and rattles

I would definatally not recommend the Avenger to anyone. Its unreliable, very noisy and the V6 is not smooth comared to a Honda or Toyota.
Sorry about the low stars but the car is not worth it.
