Strength:

3.2 Engine, Looks, Very roomy, good for the family yet if your single it's still cool to drive, premium sound is great if you got it.

Weakness:

Blind spots, Cup holders, and the foggy lights.. if you buy some stuff for them you can buff them out.

I would say the best thing you can do for these cars is to do routine oil changes.. it's just common sense for any car. $35 for an oil change will save you thousands of dollars worth of damage. Granted the 2.7L have a bad reputation, I think most problems come from people not keeping up on maintenance for their vehicles. When I bought my car it had 1 owner, an older gentleman who bought a new car every 10 years, he had records of every thing done to the car. I feel that I got a good deal for what I payed. Car never made it out to the lot because I bought it.

Bad reputation(EER)

I love this car. Sure it may be a tad underpowered because of the sheer size of it, but it moves! My daily driver before this was a 2003 Impala with a 3.4. Even though my engine in the Intrepid is smaller and has less torque than the Impala's Buick block, once it hits it's powerband it takes off. The interior os cavernous. The black on white gauges give it an incredidbly sporty feel and the tach is standard. I wish the original purchaser had stayed with the buckets and console shifter instaed of going with the 40/60 split bench w/ column shifter. The bad side of the car is the cost and some design aspects. To replace the rear struts on the car costs about 600 dollars. The radio is in an akward place and it's a pain adjusting the station while moving. The aternator is underneath the car and the battery is under the air box. To get to the battery, you have to turn the steering wheel all the way to the right and squeeze the battery out through the splash guard in the wheel well. The interior could be better when it comes to the various items remaining tight. The drivers door rattles faintly and when the driver's side window is down about a quarter of the way, it rattles quite audibly. The car had 41K miles when I bought it, now it has 51K. No problems with the EER yet, knock on wood. I'm religious when it comes to oil changes. Once every 2500-3000 miles it gets a full synthetic change (5W-30) and a new filter. Overall its a great car. Too bad its front wheel drive. It handles great and is pretty good when it comes to acceleration. This car changed my opinion about Dodge. It's replacement will be either an Intrepid with the EGJ 3.5 or a Charger.

Strength:

Horse power, handling, rides great, very luxurious, and good on gas.

Weakness:

Door seals are coming un glude and the slides on the drivers side window are wearing out, causing it to want to stick a little and make some noise.

I bought this car off of my grandparents after I cracked the head in my '93 Cavalier and killed an allready junk engine. It drives beautifly and has lots of power. The horse power is a little surprising considering the little V6 that powers it. It handles great, and I love it! I am just a little frightfull of the 2.7L engine that powers it. I have heard a lot of cut downs on this engine. But I am going to be in colleage for automotive, and I come from a family of mechanics, so if it sludges and blows up then it will still be cheaper for me to just rebuild it. Because its not often that you find this nice of a car for $2000.

Very Roomy.

Weakness:

Everything else.

I bought this car in May 2007 for $5000 and 3 months later the timing pressure switch died. The car had 42,000 miles and it cost me $1000 to fix. Then the Engine coolant valve blew spraying white smoke everywhere another $300 to fix. I bailed out selling this car for $2500. My mechanic told me the engine has sludge everywhere he looked and the 2.7 is known for sludge. The actually had one out back that seized a few month ago. My advice don't buy any dodge vehicle with a 2.7 liter. Dodge won't even change the motor and they know how much trouble it can be.

Strength:

Comfort, power, roominess (trunk as large as my old Lincoln towncar!)Lots of car for the money.

Weakness:

The drivers window made noise when closing (from day one), blind spot, which I got used to.

I know I am in the minority, but I would buy another in a minute. When I bought this car I was looking for a small truck, but couldn't find anything I liked in my budget. One dealer asked me to test drive this car and I fell in love. And the price was right. The car had 72,000 miles on it when I bought it, but that didn't scare me as I usually buy vehicles and drive them till the wheels fall off. I heard lots of horror stories about the Intrepids after I bought it, but I loved this car. I put 30-36000 miles a year on a vehicle, and this was a comfortable, roomy and fuel efficient vehicle for my needs. I had driven a Lincoln Towncar, the ultimate luxury vehicle, for 6 years, and this was a bargain-basement Towncar!! I did notice a big difference in fuel economy when you had to turn the AC on. I can't say that I was faithful in maintenance, I was really pretty slack. Long story short, I drove this car for 4 years, ended up with 262,000 miles on it, put an alternator, radiator, two modules that were about $11 each, and brakes every 6 months. We were told to expect trouble with the transmission, but never had any.I would probably still be driving it but it was totaled in an accident.

Very roomy and comfortable to drive or ride in.
HUGE trunk, big back seat - good for pet owners.
Big safe car.

Weakness:

Gas guzzler, shoddy transmission, bad breaks, bad tie rods, no pickup despite a v6 engine, replacement parts are expensive, bad in the snow

This car was nothing but trouble. My transmission just bit the dust at 125,000 miles after shifting roughly for the last 2 years. I've had to replace brakes and tie rods every six months or so. I had to replace the starter and the muffler along with what seems like dozens of little things. It was rather expensive to fix. It drove well for my sister for 6 years, but she rarely drove more than ten miles at a time. When I got it, everying started to crumble, despite regular maintainence. I had to purchase a new car because my mechanic told me it was basically junk, and I would be crazy to replace the transmission.

Plenty of room. 2.7 Engine is fine (I know I may be the only one defending it)

Weakness:

It's a gas guzzler

By reading the reviews from other people, I almost feel like my car is a Japanase car with the body of an intrepid. I bought mine used from my company and from the time the company bought it, I never saw any problems with it. It has 140,000 miles but it drives smoothly. It's possible that people who had major issues didn't do a regular maintenance.

Great running car until the engine blew without warning.

Weakness:

Great car except the 2.7 L engine.

For all the people who say that preventive maintance will keep the engine (2.7 L) from blowing, not so. We had the oil changed more often than is required, one day a little knock and the engine was gone no warning! Had it towed and it will cost 8,400 for the dealership to fix.Our transmission in our in our other dodge (grand caravan purchased new) went out at 45,000 miles. I will never own another dodge ever!

Roomy, good handling.

Weakness:

-Mine didn't have ABS but i think that's just an option.
-2.7l isn't great
-Large for a sedan

I can't sit here and completely bash the Intrepid. It's a good car but not if you have a 2.7l like I did. Like a lot of intrepids mine crapped out around the 80 thousand mile mark. It was a good car while it lasted but there were many times where i just wished i had a car with the same size engine and less in the body.

I would recommend this car, but not the 2.7l or one older than 01 or so.
