Well the car is 10+ years old. It has 170000 miles on it. Great car to drive and handles nice. Love having it in the snow and had no trouble. It is a reliable car. Chrysler is known for transmission trouble and that is the truth. Have a brand new tranny in it with about 50000 miles on it. One of the lifters in it gets stuck every so often but eventually fixs itself. I love the car and the goal is to get 200000 miles out of it and I am well on my way. Has awesome power on demand. Problems come with age, no matter how well you take care of it things are going to break. I'm also getting 26-27 mpg on the highway and 24-25 mpg in city. Awesome gas mileage specially with price of gas the way it is.

First of all for the complainers.
You are getting so much for so little.

This car is amazing for the size and the price. If you maintain it well it will run forever.

Stop complaining about stupid little things and look at the overall picture.
2.7l engine sucks, Chrysler is this, Chrysler is that. Have you've read that the 3.0l engine of the best selling car in North America Toyota Camry had exactly the same problem. Siena has the same problem. Or try a used VW to see what is a piece of crap. How much do you pay for the stupid camry and what do you get?

Intrepid is well build machine, excellent ride and the price for used, cheap, cheap, cheap for fully loaded large sedan.

Cheers.

rides smoothly (when it's running!), spacious trunk and interior

Weakness:

transmission issues (i.e., not shifting gears properly), gas mileage not that great (19 city, 21 hwy.), parts placed in car are of poor material and WILL damage easily--be prepared to whip out the checkbook!!!!

Seems like just about everyone is having the same problems with their Intrepid as I am having. I just got my car out of the shop this past FRIDAY for transmission problems (not shifting out of first gear) and for the "Malfunction Indicator Light" coming on (owner's manual says it has to do with emissions). Oh, and I might add that this was the THIRD time I have brought my vehicle in for service in the past 8 months for the same exact problem. Every time I brought it in, I was told it had to do with a modulator or some other cockamaymie part that I had no clue what it was. My mom had a 1999 Dodge Stratus that had problems with the transmission not wanting to shift gears and it was the speed sensor that needed replaced--TWICE. I told the service department this and apparently it was ignored. So now it seems I'm stuck with a piece of junk, or a large paperweight as someone previously put it, that is still not operating correctly and over $1000 in repair costs down the drain. And for those who say it's because of poor vehicle maintenance: I had my oil changed, fluids checked, and other maintenance checks done religiously. If I would have known that I would encounter such problems with this vehicle, I would have spent a little extra for a better-quality one. After dealing with these issues with my Dodge and hearing other people's problems with theirs, I will no longer purchase products with the Daimler-Chrysler name attached to it.

Strength:

Body styling, comfort, luxury ride.

Weakness:

Engine, transmission, quality (over use of cheap plastics inside and out.) Lousy gas mileage.

Purchased this Intrepid new in March of 2002 with 6 miles on the odometer. As of this writing, the car has 26,495 miles. I average roughly 6200 miles a year. July 2002 - check engine light comes on. Dealer has no idea why. Resets complete computer systems. One week later the light comes back on. Dealership replaces power train control module. September 2002 - Check engine light once again comes on. Dealer says computer system is "confused" due to high humidity that we have been experiencing (uh..ok..)Replaces 2/1 02 sensor and resets engine systems. November, 2002...you guessed it. Dealer again claims confusion on the sensor's part and resets computer. July, 2003 my old buddy Mr. Check Engine light returns and brings along his friend, Mr. ROUGH IDLE. Car nearly stalls when stopped at traffic lights, stop signs, etc. Dealer performs diagnostic test code for oxygen sensor heater. They erase the memory and check & clean all pin connections. No problems for a week, then engine light flickers on briefly, then winks out as if to say "I'll be back". August, 2003 - Recall work; driver's seat recliner bolts replaced. Late August 2003, air conditioner does not blow very cold air. Dealer replaces condensor. October 2003 -vibration in steering wheel when decelerating. Front rotors warped and brake pads shot.(6198 mi.) Had to replace at my expense. Spring 2004 - notice vibration in steering wheel while driving on highway. Diagnosis by dealer - "You must have hit a pothole. Your front end alignment is off." I take the car to a tire dealer for alignment work. Computer diagnostic report shows car is NOT out of alignment. I again question dealer as to the cause. "Everything looks fine." he replies. "Check the front rotors again." The rotors, of course, are fine... Problem is still unsolved. November, 2004 - Rough idle while in gear returns. This followed by occasional appearance of check engine light. Car returned to dealer for service. They clean and service throttle body. Winter 2005, I begin to notice slight knocking sound when climbing hills. I bring the car to the dealer. No problem found. "Try using high-octane gas every other tank." I'm told. 2005 - 2006 - Acceleration is sluggish. Transmission emits a slightly muffled "bump" when shifting into second. Driver's door beginning to rattle when car is in motion. Driver's window beginning to creak when being raised (and shifts loosely when lowered half way.) Beginning to notice more play in the steering wheel. Feels like tie rod ends are failing. I have had the oil changed every 3 months religiously on this car. Sometimes with as little as 600 miles between changings. Now with a little over 26,000 miles, the tranny is going. I have decided to dump this car before the infamous 2.7 liter decides to buy the farm as I had read in so many of these other posts. I have kept this car immaculate, inside and out. The resale value is unbelievably low. I have purchased a Honda (first ever non-American car for me)and was given $6,000 for my ultra-low mile Intrepid and that was after a very heated negotiation session with the Honda sales manager. I'm told they will have to find a Chrysler dealer to buy the car from them. They will never move it off of their lot and that the Chrysler powertrains have a less than worthy reputation...

Everything, this baby performs like it's a sports car trapped in the body of a sedan, with enough room for six and then some, not to mention a humongous trunk!

Weakness:

none at all!

This car is awesome! The 3.5 liter engine has major punch, stock with over 214 horses and 241.6 lbs of torque, this ain't grandpa's sedan. Not to mention how roomy it is, the responsiveness of the handling and braking for a car its size, acceleration and speed (until you hit the governor)... this car is a sedan to fit six, that handles and act's like a sports car, or it just wishes it was a Roadrunner, either or. I got a steal on the car because the owner was moving, and it was well worth it. Minor suspension problems with the stock suspension, until it was replaced. This car is aweeeeeeeeeesssommeee!

shotty workmanship and shotty parts.

This is a ok van. Not great and not poor. Yes the workmanship is shotty. But it is roomy and looks better than some of the other vans. The one big selling point for me was the power. It is much better than the dodge. The Pontiac transmittion is much smoother and more predictable than the Dodge.

problems parallel parking with such a large car, sound system sucks, wish it came standard with cd in 2000.

I just purchased my 2000 intrepid about 4 days ago with 56,000 miles on it and now I am hearing so many complaints against the 2.7 liter engine and it scares me. However I will use the synthetic oil for my oil changes, thanks for the warnings. Besides that, I love my car I have wanted one ever since the style changed and it runs beautifully. It does soooo well on gas for a car of this size. I will keep riding along and i will keep you updated.

AC is a little tricky, seems to bog the car down, and it's touchy, a little hard to maintain a comfortable temp.

I bought this car last spring with 98k miles on it. I absolutely love this car!! For all thpeople with blown engines and problems of the sort....it's called PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE!!!! Although I have heard that the 2.7 that Dodge came out with in '98 is just a lemon. My '97 has the older body style and a 3.3ltr V-6 that really gets up!! For the guy that said "it takes 3 people to change a tail light.....WOW, how inept are you??? This is by far the best car I have ever owned. When it dies I will go out and buy another Dodge Intrepid!!!!

I love my Intrepid. I have not had one single problem with it since I bought it in March 2003 with 30,000. It's an excellent highway and city driving car. I especially love the highway driving, it's smooth and comfortable even at top speeds. I did find I had bad road noise with the stock Goodyear GA's but since I have replaced them with Yokohama's it's a big difference.
