Strength:

Rides great, roomy, very comfortable, sporty look, handles well

Weakness:

front brake rotors, transmission sensor is on exterior of tranny and is susceptible to corrosion from weather conditions. Door seals working loose

I purchased this car about 2 years ago with 12,000 miles on it. I was skeptical to buy is because of mixed reviews, but I just couldn'p ass up the price for a loaded intrepid w/ leather interior. It now has 60,000 miles and only a couple minor problems had occurred. For some problem I have had problems with the front brake rotors warping and have been unable to solve. Also, at about 55,000 miles, the transmission locked in 2nd gear due to a sensor malfunction but the repair was only $250

Strength:

Size, comfort, handling, sound system (stock), trunk size, looks sporty, nice acceleration.

Weakness:

cup holders, blind spots (fixed with attachable blind spot mirror), rear view when backing up.

I haven't had this very long but I did my research on this vehicle. I was going to buy the Sebring until I saw that my Intrepid was only $1,000 more. Everything about this car was just right for me- nice size which could seat 5 people, the controls (air, stereo, seats) were simple yet ergonomic, and the handling is very nice for such a large sedan. The stock stereo produces a very rich sound and the aerodynamics of the vehicle along with the compartment seals keep the road noise down to a minimum. Seats are very comfortable and the trunk is large enough to pack for long vacations. I've read a lot of negative things concerning the Dodge Intrepids but I've been told by friends who work at Dodge dealerships that most problems they have had with the Intrepids were from people *NOT* keeping up with the oil maintenance. Change your oil regularly is what everyone has told me and most of the "bad" reviews seem to be around the 2000-2002 years. The Dodge mechanic I talked to also told me models before 2002 had a few lemons. I bought this at a stellar price and I'm happy with it.

Model Reviewed: 2.7L Sedan

Strength:

Handles well. Large trunk and roomy inside. Interior trim seems well designed. Doors autolock upon reaching 15mph. (Or is it 25mph?) Pulling the inside door latch will open locked doors (they have a mechanical backup).

Weakness:

Transmission and engine design defects result in early failures, despite careful maintenance. A warranty from a dishonest company can be worthless. Expensive to repair. 2.7L engine known to build up sludge. Adhesive is used to bind windows to top rail. Window motors often fail. Headlights fogged with moisture. Difficult to work on (replacing the battery requires raising passanger wheel off the ground, turning the wheel all the way, then removing battery via the wheelwell). Other fun things like that.

We purchased this car used. It was a previous 1 year lease vehicle with 33k miles on it. Made sure to get the extended warranty up to 75k miles, but, as you will see, that did little good. The car currently has 117k miles. However, that is misleading since we are a military family and going home was putting 1500 miles on it per trip. I would say that over half of the miles were highway. The Intrepid always received maintenance on time: oil changes, transmission fluid changes, brakes, and so on. At about 45k miles (I think), a line carrying fluid from the transmission to the radiator came loose, resulting in me stuck in the middle of nowhere (long trip) at 2:00AM. Somewhere in here the rear passenger window motor went. Sorry, not covered by warranty - ok, I will live with it until I have a chance to fix it myself. Next problem was around 600 miles under warranty, when the transmission started failing to shift. Took it in to Dodge and they returned it, saying it was fixed. Following the repair, the transmission had some burps, but they were random and could not be replicated by Dodge. At something like 400 miles out of warranty the transmission went right back to not shifting out of gear. It was acting EXACTLY like the previous. Took it in and they replaced some parts and also some sensors. When they told me I was responsible to pay the service manager and I had some words. Granted, he took care to get behind the counter, but shaking the worm would not get my car back without payment. I contacted Dodge customer service, since obviously they had just placed a temporary patch on my problem before. No good. I eventually, after probably 2 hours of arguing, talked to the senior person at the call center. Know what he told me? "We probably didn't fix it right, but you are now out of warranty and we have no legal obligation to fix your car for no charge." That is possibly the most disgusting thing I have ever heard, especially from the official representative of a company that expects a family to pay $20k for their vehicle. I wrote to the head of Dodge about all this, including names, times, places - everything. The letter that came back was a form letter, stating that they agreed with what I had been told. Base legal told me that I had a longshot if I sued. So, we ate the cost of repair and went our way. Next problem was about 85k miles. The engine chugged and required replacement of the timing change, oil pump, sensors, and some other parts. I am betting this was related to sludge build-up. Search online for something like "Dodge 2.7L sludge engine failure" and you will see a horrific story unfold. I have seen numerous complaints from people denied warranty coverage when their engine failed due to sludge! Read around and it becomes clear that the sludge is a design defect and Dodge is sticking people with the cost of their failure. Anyway, the driver's window is also broken. The clip is held to the rail inside the door with an epoxy! No screw holds that window in. I tried to repair it with JB weld, but I must need a stronger 2-part epoxy. The clip holds for a week or two of use, then the JB weld gives and the window skews and cannot be used. The latest problem is the death toll for this car, for which I still have to make 3 payments. The transmission suddenly would not shift and also makes a whining sound. The repair shop was able to tell me that something serious has happened, but they do not know the extent without pulling the transmission out - a $400 charge. I now have a large Dodge paperweight parked nearby and a new Honda Accord in the driveway. After lots of research, including the extended warranty Honda gave their Accord and Civic owners when Honda found that the 1999-2001 models had chronic transmission problems, I definitely chose the Honda. Also found a NJ Department of Transportation study that found 1 Lemon Law complaint for every 392 Dodge vehicles registered. It was a huge gap from the next worst manufacturer. Wish I could find that again, I think it was an Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) file.

Strength:

comforatble to ride in, good gas mileage, very dependable

Weakness:

only bad thing it has to use 89 octane gas but I really don't mind.

The best car I've ever owned. Its has 197,200 miles on it and we've only ever had to do small repairs, some bushings in front end when the car hit 180,000 and a few belts and a sensor. My husband has done all repairs himself. The engine still runs smooth and quiet and transmission shifts great. It started first time after not being run most of the winter because I had a new baby and stayed home. My best friends husband, after riding in car, who has been a ford mechanic for 20 years said if he didn't work for Ford he would go right out buy a Dodge. He couldn't believe how good the car sounds with that many miles. I just can't say enough about this car. I've owned it for 6 years. It has the 3.5L V6. my husband has been trying to get me to buy a new car but I just can't part with this one. I will run it till it dies.

Terrible. This car was not bad for the first 4 years, then watch out. Speed sensors, power windows problems, trunk lock problems, then engine blown due to "sludge". unbeleivable when you see how many customers ALL with many of the same problems. Of course Chrysler refuses to acknowledge the problem. Family members and business has purchased 12 Chrysler vehicles in last 5 years, and we are now all going to other manufactures.Already have purchased: Impala; Honda; and Cadillac. I Did not repair engine, quoted $3600 for rebuilt, so for a 5 year vehicle..no thanks..went out and bought good old reliable Chevrolet Impala this weekend. Only owe one more payment on Intrepid. Never should have left Chevy, after great success with Camaro and Celebrity lasted 8 years and 10+ respectively. Believe me when I say, NO MORE CHRYSLER vehicles for us!They will eventually loose allot more than $3600.

always starts. Looks GREAT! alot of room. ALOT! powerful. Step on the gas and the baby goes!! never leaked any oil!! childproof locks and windows. a plus for anyone with children!!

Weakness:

bad in snow..sensors go out, weather striping bad, front end is a disaster for problems, signal/running light works sometimes and not other times.

I went car shopping and couldn't even find anything that was even near to what I wanted in a car until I found my intrepid. It was love at first sight! I am still to this day in love with my car so it is very hard to let it go. Nothing but problems with it from the start. Not even one month after I purchased it the check engine light was coming on all the time. The dealership told me to turn it off and restart it. I did so and the light wasn't on. They said it has a sensitive 02 sensor. It was sensitive alright,I had to replace it! A month and a half ago I had to stick $500 into the front end with new tie rods and ball joints. I don't even know what they are but they caused alot of problems. Tomorrow(believe it or not) I am dropping my car off at the garage because for some reason as I was driving it was like I put it in nutral as I was driving. I lost all power on a major high way. Judging by the reviews..transmission. I am a single mother trying to make it on my own. I can't afford this. My father wants me to fix it and keep it. believe it or not I wanted to look into getting a newer intrepid. I heard they have had problems but wasn't for sure so that's how I got here. I think I will get something else. Even if it is something small that is wrong with my car I will fix it and trade it in while I have the chance. My car has 140,000 miles on it and it has been good to me I have to say but I don't think these cars were made to last. If you are looking for a temperary vehicle then the intrepid is for you. I drove ALOT of miles with my car and I have to be honest..I'm not good with changing oil. I do have a problem with the weatherstripping in car though. It won't stay on. I really will miss my car alot but these cars are not reliable. Night time..single mother..3 year old in the car..stranded on the side of the road..Doesn't sound good to me! My car has ALWAYS started even with the wisconsin winters. That's a plus. As for giving my opinion to others who are looking into purchasing an Intrepid..Every car is different. Some are good..some are bad. I have mixed feelings about the Itrepid. If you purchase one..may you love your car as much as I do and it works better for you than mine has!! And for anyone with snow..not very good in the snow

Strength:

Very spacious and comfortable to drive. Looks great.

Weakness:

Air conditioning unit, brakes, and engine with it's oil "sludge". Blind spots are terrible, but you get used to them and learn to work around them.

Car was great when I first bought it. Two years later had to replace all door seals and weatherstrip clips, as well as air conditioning unit evaporator core. At the same time, I had to rplace the pads and rotors. Had to pay $736.00 that the extended warranty wouldn't cover. Less than six months later, at 56000 miles, I started having problems with the windshield wipers not working correctly, and the door locks not working correctly. They made an awful sound when they locked, and you couldn't unlock the drivers door with the key. The car was also starting to "knock", so I took it into the shop. They told me that there was "sludge build up", which caused my timing chain to loosen. The extended warranty would not cover this siting a lack of maintenance because I did not save all of my oil change receipts. They ended up replacing the timing chain, 2 tensioners, the guides, gears, and water pump for a grand total of $1300.00 that the warranty would not cover. After reading other reviews, I worry about the transmission going out as well. From here on out I will save every receipt that has to do with this, or any other vehicle. If you purchase an Intrepid, have your oil changed before 3000 miles and SAVE YOUR RECEIPTS!!! I will have second thoughts on purchasing another Dodge.
