Strength:

Is good on gas, have to fill up once A week. Used to like the look of the car now I can care less, looks no longer matter, reliability and resale value count now and as we all know the neon has neither of these qualities.

Weakness:

Where to start. This very cheaply manufactured to say the least. The interior is all loose plastic, things break and crack easily, the exterior dents easy, my paint is peeling off, had to have my transmission rebuilt, had to replace front brakes, had to get new motor mounts, a new flaunge exhaust donut, and now oil is leaking. Keep in mind I get oil changes every 3000 miles have a 2 tune-ups, I take very good care of car needless to say will never buy an American car again, currently in the process of selling this piece of junk and will buy either a Honda Civic or Accord, from all the research I've done and from word of mouth they're extremely reliable and both excellent resale value, if you dont believe do the research and see, or make another costly mistake.

My review is simply based on the facts. For the Neon lovers out there have fun when you want sell your car or trade it in and get $1500 for it, what the heck, at least you would have gotten your head gasket repair money back.

Model Reviewed: Neon Highline 4 Door

Strength:

Is the fastest car in it's class. Acceleration at 2nd and 3rd gear on the auto's comparable to a V-6 sports car. Very spacious interior. More comfortable than my friend's Taurus. Not bad for storage. Gas mileage is exceptional, 27 MPG in the city, 31 on the highway. Very nice sound package off the lot. Looks decent, and is safer than most other compact cars. 131 HP tops all other compact cars. Handling is excellent, extremely smooth. Brakes are very smooth, you can slam on the brakes and still not be slammed into the steering wheel. Innovative design.

Weakness:

It's a typical Dodge product, meaning cheap. Head gaskets will eventually blow on all autos, air compressor has tendency to go out, paint chips, frame is weak and dents easily, rear bumper feels loose, although it gets the job done. Front headlights are weak, engine is loud for such a small car. Way too much wind leakage. 3 Speed automatic is not enough. 1st gear is a dog. The car could take Grand Ams and Cougars if it accelerated in first gear as well as 2nd and 3rd. Off lot brakes and tires will wear down quickly. Just be sure to get some good replacements. While it handles great, steering feels stiff.

What the Neon lacks in longevity and durability, it makes up for in having very exceptional performance. If Dodge had recalled the head gasket problem, Neon would probably be considered the best of all sub-compacts. The AC is on and off, the engine stresses and makes noise after hard acceleration, and the gas level sensor in the tank has broken for some reason, requiring the use of math and the tachometer. While many have claimed that the car gets awful gas mileage, that's a little off. Fuel economy is good in this car. I plan to get a new paintjob now that the paint is chipping.

Similar Products Used:

It has as many problems as you'll get from a Cavalier, Escort, Sunfire, Integra, Civic, Probe, Malibu, etc., and the Neon could floor anyone of those cars. So it's probably better.

Strength:

roomy back seat and trunk

Weakness:

air conditioner, noise, vibration, fog light, HEAD GASKET!!! seat belts, gas mileage, sunroof

I bought this car because of the look, sporty, but also roomy for 2 sons. Within the first year, the sunroof was stuck 2 times, couldn't close it, the a/c went out. Forget trying to go faster that 60mph, the vibration rocks the car. Fog light went out, trying to replace that was terrible. Seat belts ripped at the bottom, speakers don't work on the passenger side. Has leaked oil since I bought it, took it to our compitent and friendly Dodge dealer (YEAH RIGHT!!!) they said there wasn't a problem, now I found out the head gasket is blown. Gas mileage is crappy, since the day I got it. This is the worst car I have ever owned. I would not wish this car on my worst enemy. I have been at this for 3 days now, Chrysler will pay. If you have the same problems with the head gasket, call or write to them so they will fix this!!! Now I have to give them at least one star!!! They can take the star and stick it where the sun don't shine as far as I'm concerned.

Strength:

Speed. GAS MILAGE (exspecially with gas being 1.99 here (thank god i just went down to 1.39!)) front seat comfort.Easy to work on. Good reliablitly

Weakness:

Poor ride if left stock. 3 speed auto sucks! Oxygen sensors go offline when it rains (fixed with exaust "tape")

This is in addition to my previous review:
I have since been in a accedent with a light pole due to someone cutting me off in very icy weather. This caused me to hit the brakes hard and MN DOT had left the roads very cy but i hit a dry patch on the left side causeing my car to spin out during heavy braking and i spun around and hit the pole at 10 mph in the lefty rear corner. No damage! I was amazed.
Ive found quite a few better things about this car now also. The aluminum rims havent flaked liek some ive seen. The ride is rough BUT if you get good tires and better shocks its perfect. The expandibility of this car is amazing. I can order millions of after market parts from projection lamps to turbo systems to lowering springs. Its really popular in the "import" arena.

Rebuilds are not fun BUT they are easy in a neon. I only had to rebuild because staying at the generous 7350 redline for to long is BAD! Thats ook i learned a lot from it anyway. I dont street race but i have added a few new items. Im building my own custom aluminum air intake, i have lowered springs and did run a venom Nitrous system for a few days (testing for another car project). IT still flies. Now it is slower than most cars when it has the 3 speed auto so do yourself a favor and get the 5 speed. I also have put in a kevlar Mopar clutch disc in and it hasnt burnt out in 20000 miles. Accully there has been very little clutch fade at all.

A few problems i have worked out in the neons:
-Window leaks? Take the latch set on the car side (metal loop that the latch clasps around) and loosen it. Move it up 1/8 of an inch and in 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch. If done right the door will till match op and your window wont leak.
-Rear light leak? Pull out lamp assembaly with a 13 mm socket (i think) and put RTV silicon (blue) along the track where the body would meet the light. re assemble.

-Power loss (lights going off not HP loss) when AC kicks on at about 3200 rpm? GO to the dealership. The is a service bullitin out for a new relay that prevents this.

-Poor head lights? Go out and buy some "ultra white" or better zenon filled bulbs MUCH brighter!

Any other questions email me. If this message makes no sense dotn complain. I just had mouth surgury and im taking vicadin 8-)

OH yes one more thing! The thing i li ek most about this car is that its VERY functional but when you need to install somethign like a sterio or wires from the trunk to the engine compartment EVERYTHING comes apart easy and goes right back together!

Corners great, top speed, sweet looks, acceleration from 50 to 90.

Weakness:

head gastket, lights, and really heavy foot.

In the first month i had it, i blew the head gasket. Other then that, the car has been good. I have drag raced a 89 cheroke w/ a 4.0 and only lost by .05 seconds. Also i have beat a 2001 honda accord in a highway race. Corners REALLY nice. Car has a lot of mods avalible. Im 16, and i can say that it does take a lot of abuse w/ 106,000 miles. In the snow, you can keep control easaly as long as you dont fool around. I deffinitly am looking to get a new 2001 neon in the future, but for now, the 95 will be drivin by a 16 year old aiming to race in the daytona in the future.

There are very few, but it isnt a bad looking car.

Weakness:

1) Head gaskets blowing
2) Brakes sqeaking no matter what U do
3) Service engine soon light always coming on and no one knows whats wrong
4) paint peeling off
5) POOR STRUTS HIT A LITTLE BUMP AND STRUTS BREAK AND THE CAR IS UNDRIVABLE COSTING UP TO $1000 IN REPAIRS!!!!!!!!!!
6)trunk and sunroof leaking making the car reak of mildew

This car is a peice of crap. I have nothing but problems with it since day 1. The first day I bougth it( brand new) I had to bring it back b/c of paint peeling off the bumper. I bought it back 5 times just for that. I have also blown my head gasket. The dealer pretend to fix your cars while they keep them for a week at a time and they never even touch them. Never buy a dodge. You are not suppose to have problems with a new car within the first 3 years, and I will gaurantee you if you buy a Dodge you will have problems within the first couple of months.
