Strength:

Where to start? Great handling - I've surprised more than one sports car driver with this little baby - and excellent acceleration, if you're willing to put up with some noise. Gas mileage is excellent, considering this car's performance. On a recent trip through the mountains, I got almost 47 miles per gallon! The car will pull in 5th gear up all but the steepest grades and requires very little down-shifting. It has a very smooth clutch and an excellent 5-speed manual transmission, although top gear is a bit short. The steering is almost perfect - nicely weighted with lots of feel. Brakes are powerful and fade-free with excellent pedal feel. KILLER stereo, with the optional CD changer. Some may think the changer's mounted too low on the dashboard, but at least that forces you to pull the car over to insert or remove a CD, a safety plus in my book. The seats are firm and very comfortable and show no wear at all. Roomy rear seat and trunk. The split fold-down rear seat is very handy. Air conditioner's cold enough to make ice-cubes with, and it's fast, too. The automatically dimming interior lights are an unexpected touch. The cab-forward design keeps the windshield well away from your face and gives the car a very open, modern feel, which I like. Dealer service has been excellent, very quick and courteous. NO mechanical problems whatsoever in 2 years.

Weakness:

There's too much tire roar on textured pavement. Rear visibility is limited, making backing up difficult. This is partly due to the car's tail-high stance, which should be reduced at least a couple of inches. Engine still too noisy and coarse under hard acceleration. Inside trunk and fuel filler door releases should be standard equipment,as should ABS. Alloy wheels look great but are hard to keep clean. Rubber-covered shifter for the 5-speed looks and feels cheap, as do the standard floor mats. Rear windows should wind all the way down. The ride's on the stiff side, but that's a price I'm more than willing to pay for this car's very good handling. The wheel-well openings are a bit too big, giving this otherwise handsome car a vaguely awkward look. And how about a power outlet in the trunk?

I love this little car! I have a Salsa Red 2000 Neon LX 5-speed with optional alloy wheels and up-graded tires, air conditioning and in-dash CD changer, no other options. The car looks and drives great and has been totally reliable and trouble-free so far, better than any car I've ever owned, including a lot of Japanese cars. I consider the Neon a poor person's BMW, it's that much fun to drive. Thanks, Chrysler!

Strength:

Who needs ABS? These are the best, most reliable, most consistent brakes I've encountered in years. The seats are comfy, the view from the front is great. Responsive steering. Minimal body roll when cornering. Decent skins from the factory. Front wheel drive.

Weakness:

Any time I have to roll down a window manually, that's a bad thing. Any time I have to lock a door manually, that's a bad thing. The rake of the body makes backing difficult. Poopy gas mileage. Poopy range. Hey, Dodge, ever think of making a gas tank bigger than a fish tank?

The Dodge Neon. Hmmm. Nice car. Great brakes. Mediocre gas mileage. No range.

If I ran the zoo, I'd buy a fleet of Neons for all my detectives. Once they got over the initial status loss, they'd be sent to a FWD performance driving course. From there, they'd be wishing they'd purchased one earlier.

Day-to-day, any citizen can drive a Neon. You push the envelope, you'd better be FWD trained.

I swear, there's nothing finer than taking some young cop studling and kicking his living ass in one of our standard 3-speed automatic whitebread 4-door Neons on the cornering course. Okay, so I've got it locked out in first and maybe second. His 3,900-pound, 215 HP Interceptor should make up for it all, right?

Uh, yeah. . .

NOT!

But you'd BETTER know how to drive a FWD.

Okay, so maybe I run a Neon more to the ragged edge than will most Neon owners. I don't think of this as necessarily a bad thing.

Makes me wonder what a Neon RT will do.

I still hate the roll-up windows.

2000 and 2001 Ford Crown Victoria and Police Interceptor. I teach emergency and pursuit training to cops on a response course with few straights and many corners. In summation, I'll kick your ass on this course with my stupid county-purchased Dodge Neon. First, you can follow me and you won't be able to keep up. Second, I will follow you and I'll be right on your ass. Sure, you'll lose me in a straight. But only when I hit my rev limiter. And sooner or later, you're going to have to take a corner. PERFECTLY.

Ask yourself, what makes a good car great? Would that be the BRAKES? The answer would be a resounding YES. I can brake later, more confidently and more consistently into a turn than you can. Fade is damned near minimal. To go faster, you gotta go slower. Figure that one out boys and girls. Who needs ABS when you can threshold brake?

Oh, and yes, I'll kick your ass if you happen to be driving any of our 1994 or 1995 Chevy Caprice LT-1 cop car packages as well. You'll boot my butt in a straight (if you can control the throttle and avoid power oversteer) but you're going to have to brake prior to turn-in and, guess what? This is where I nab your ass!

How embarrassing to be a cop and have a Neon you can't shake!

Strength:

Handles like a dream. Very quick accelleration. Competition steering ratio. Sweet sound system with cd changer. Cool chrome tipped dual exhaust.

Weakness:

Loud engine, stiff ride, but this is a trade off for the performance and handling. Seat is on order now cause threads are coming out of original.

I love this car. It is very quick and handles like it is on rails. It is not for someone seeking a quiet, refined, ride. If you want all out performance bang for your buck and the convenience of a four door econo box you can't go wrong.

Strength:

The system is very good for being stock and I like the CD player. The overall apperance is sleak and sporty. Also, the car is very comfortable and it's very easy to drive. There is a lot of trunk room. It drives very smoothly, and it handles fast speeds pretty well.

Weakness:

After only having the car for about 2 1/2, I have noticed the engine is a little loud on the highway, but I assume thats normal. I thing the sunroof is a little slow at opening and closing. Also I dont like the fact that the windows in the back aren't power like the front. Other than that I don't really have anything bad to say about the new neon.

I really love my car. I got everything I wanted for a good price. The car drives good and there is a lot of room. The gas mileage is pretty good also.

I used to have a 1990 Subuaru Legacy SW. I loved that car, but it had a lot problems, mainly because it was getting old. It drove good but it looked like a piece of junk. I feel that the neon fits my personality more and it's a great car!!!

Strength:

Cute. Like the automatic on the floor. The gas mileage is good.

Weakness:

Paint, paint, paint. and did I say paint? It's peeling off everywhere. I have contacted Chrysler. Let's hope they do the right thing and fix it. After some research I have found this is a common problem. That and the lovely gaskets. Speedometer sensor also went out, as did the cruise control. Lot's of dough I have had to sink back into it.

Cute car. I loved how it looked. So I bought it without researching it. It broke down before we got it home the first time. And the second time. I am beggining to regret ever buying it. And, from what I can tell, we way overpaid. The dealer wouldn't take it back. He was probably glad to get rid of it.

None. I may never buy another one like it. It's been a lemon from the start.

well the seats work and then theres the.... oh wait everything on these cars break

Weakness:

where do i start, on both i've owned i've had major oil leeks, air conditioners broke, needed new breaks, head gasket, broken trunk, speakers, you name it i had it (of course paint peeling, i think it was standard on all neons at the time mine was released.)

What a piece of junk. How did these things sell in the first place, they fall apart as you drive as soon as you fix one thing the next breaks and its always more expensive. My advice blow it up and collect insurance money.

great pickup and handling. Had no affiliation with dodge dealers, and hope i never have to.BUY PRIVATE! I would recommend this car to anyone with a sense of adventure. Sure you can hear the engine at 120km/hr. Personally i like it! As a travelling car it might not excel, but for a college student like me, it's an excellent way to get around!

Weakness:

nothing too too bad, frameless window gets stuck occasionally, a/c needs recharging after 153k minor rust bubbles on interior door panels, but for $4000 canadian, what can you expect??? oh yeah,,,, HOW THE HELL DO YOU GET YOUR CUP BACK WHEN YOU'RE IN PARK????

nice looking, excellent pickup, comfortable, amazing mileage.
First owned car, and haven't been let down yet. I bought this car with brand new head gasket (had already blew) brakes and exhaust, so hopefully the typical neon problems will be avoided.

This is one damn fine vehicle! I used to have to go to my cousin Ali's to "bang", but now Neon is in my own garage, and all my neighbors can hear the screams of "Fender! Fender! Muh! NEEEEEEEEEEEEON!" every night, and sometimes all night, and usually more than once a night. Damn fine vehicle! Big Sean likes that!

Strength:

Very solid car, never developed odd problems common with high mileage vehicles. No strange noises, handling remained the same from the beginning. It always started, extremely dependable!

Weakness:

Terrible blind spot and no standard mirror on passenger side. Head gasket - no surprise!

On 8/4/01 our Dodge Neon with 170,000 miles finally died. The transmission suffered an internal problem which would cost $2,300 to be fixed. Needless to say we purchased a new car. During the last 5.5 years we owned the Neon we replaced a head gasket (but not until 98,000 miles) and 2 EGR valves. Besides regular maintenance we replaced nothing else! The car was a tank! Extremely fast car for the money. At 170,000 miles it still ran like we were only at 60,000! The car is great for anyone looking for a dependable car and prays a lot! Thanks God!

Strength:

AC gets cold fast, roomy, comfortable on long trips, half way decent list of standard features. 5 Speed (Come on Chrysler, this is the 21st century, think you might come up and join it by putting an o/d on your Automatic?)

Weakness:

Slow, noisy engine (I have driven cars with less horsepower than this and they have better pick up), Fuel Economy/Range poor for a car of it's size, White gauges in all but base model. wheels started ticking within first thousand miles (dealer said I would have to live with it because it is the bolt-on hubcaps), Floor mats bunch up, on drivers side, the slide sideways and bunch up under foot pedals)

It has been a pretty reliable car. Had to have the rear window replaced due to bubbles in the glass distorting the reward view. No big deal. Have had the car a little over 6 months, had 13 miles when I drove it off the lot. I now have just under 12,000 miles and all I have had to do is change the oil and rotate the tires. Not a bad car for the money.
