Model Reviewed: Dodge Neon ES

Strength:

Good responsiveness given a 5spd and a 132 HP motor. It handled surprisingly well. Neon is a very quiet, smooth riding car. The leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob gave the car a little class. I also liked the white-face gauges. The "Impulse" wheels were a nice touch also.

Weakness:

The only complaint I had was that there was a little too much lag time when the gas pedal was depressed and the time when the engine responded. Other than that, NO complaints.

I loved my Patroit Blue Neon from minute one. This car had every option except for ABS and a sunroof (bad previous experience with a Chevy). The car shifted smoothly and was quite peppy for 132 HP. There was zero wind noise (this was due to the redesign of the full door frame). The interior was plush, and I was surprised at how roomy the car was. (I use the past tense due to some careless lady who decided to run a stop sign, and as a result, totaled my poor car. But, I have upgraded to a 2001 Neon R/T (review to come).

Model Reviewed: Dodge Neon 4door

Strength:

Fairly dependable is about all I can say. Seats are somewhat comfortable.

Weakness:

Low quality paint, head-gasket, speakers, hubcaps, oil leaks.

Needed to replace head gasket, brakes squeal, front speakers died, major, major paint problems on roof (It's so bad, I had a woman from Atlanta pull up next to me in traffic saying that I could demand that Dodge repaint my car :) The AC is dead, but I don't know if it just needs a recharge or not. I had major oil leak problems. I had a transmission leak, but apparently it was just a hose to the coolant or something. I didn't think I'd ever in my lifetime make it out of a transmission shop for under $100. Hubcaps are a pain to get on and off. One is lost because it got damaged when I let a tire shop put new tires on. Otherwise, it runs OK.

Strength:

Cost, dependability, and and pickup.

Weakness:

Air conditioning died in the first year :(. Also the blower on the front window was horrible, you had to keep the thing cranked on those cold Michigan mornings just to see.

Other than a few minor issues, I have loved my neon. It was a great price and has gotten me from one side of the country to the other. I don't regret the purchase and I am excited about possibly getting a new 2002 model.

Strength:

It is cute and it is paid for....gas mileage is decent. The paint problems that have hit some Neons (mostly metallic blue models) have not happened to our green metallic Neon. AC works great.

Weakness:

Bad brakes, head gasket design flaw, and most importantly, Chrysler will not admit, pay for, or even discuss in most cases the flaws of their manufacturing. It is a lemon. It is not worth anything for trade in. Stay away!

Sporty little car (it is my wife's), but has some consistantly bad things going for it.
1. The head gasket problem that we have had to fix twice now. (fixed in 1999 and newer models). Chysler has never admitted wrongdoing, but they know it is a design defect.
2. The brakes have been squeaking since purchase. (How do you know when they are going bad?)
3. The stereo has shorted out.

Do not purchase a used 1995-1998 Neon.

Strength:

A cheap car with room to spare.

Weakness:

a good car until you get about 60000miles. The car then begins to ride like a truck.
Head Gasket will never make it past 80000 miles. Crankshaft seal leaks spraying oil everywhere.
The automatic only get an average of 27 mpg which sucks for a car this size, many mid size sedans get this kind of mpg.
There limited brands of tires available for the neon, because the wheels are narrow. Spent $400 bucks on tires that lasted 15000miles, tires wear very fast, on my 4th set of them.
Seals suck around doors, lets water get in and heat get out, water seaps into the car doors and blows out your speakers.

A good reliable car for the first 60000 miles, then it begins to fall apart.
Only buy on of these that are fairly new with low miles and keep it for only a few years, or else your car will transform in to a piece of crap that you are still paying for, and everyone will know how to follow you home because of the trail of oil you leave behind...

Please do not feel sorry for yourself and buy a near, get a real car...

Spend an extra few grand and get a vehicle that will last. Like the oldsmobile intrigue, better gas mileage more room, similiar cost, and better resale.

Strength:

Peppy engine, econmical, up to 37 mpg on trips, good ac and heat, but only have to use ac in hottest weather, which is plenty hot in SC. Somehow, design seems to control heat buildup. Excellent handling and brakes. Good ride. Big trunk. Lots of room in back seat. Quiet, especially at speed. Tight body and suspension.I have put over 10,000 miles on this car in 4 months. No problems whatsoever.

Weakness:

Poor visibility to rear, bustle rear end hard to see over. Miserly touches. I bought the base model, but no inside mirror control on passenger side and no inside release for trunk. C'mon Chrysler. How cheap can you get. Big annoyance, though, is the 3 speed automatic. I had to get automatic because my wife will not drive manual transmission, otherwise I would have gotten manual. Most of the reviews I have read have would rate Neon much higher if it had a four speed automatic option.

Comfortable, good trip and commuter car, economical, roomy, good seats, feels a lot bigger than it is. Friend of mine who drives Buick and Taurus fell asleep in it, and said he couldn't help it because the Neon was such a smooth car!

Similar Products Used:

1996 Neon Expresso with 150 DOHC engine. It was awesomely powerful and sporty, but noisy, especially wind noise and didn't ride as well as 2000 model. I tested Ford Focus, but thought Neon was more comfortable, and handled better. One sit-down in a Chevrolet Cavalier was enough. Styling of Toyota Echo put me off. Korean cars tinny. Most Japanese cars not as comfortable, and more expensive than Neon
