My 95 Isuzu rodeo had loosening up of the timming belt at about 150 miles away from home,So I called a friend who is a used car dealer and I bought his 1996 Aspire with all the basics. After reading the review here I have to agree with alot of it .I drove 171 miles and it sucked down 3/4 of a tank of gas ,it does seem to jerk when the tranny shifts between 1st & 2nd and it seemed to shake alittle at 65 MPH,The winshield wipers are noisy with only 2 speeds,I think it needs brakes and roaters too.it leaks oil alittle.I thought the thermistat needed to be replaced cause it stayed on cold when driving,my dealer friend said to put a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator when going thru a puddle at 60 MPH it was fairly easy to control.I filled the tank and it seems to leak alittle. it has 115360 miles on it..It got me home - fully loaded with all the junk I was carrying from my truck.

Strength:

Cheap to maintain, parts are cheaper than most cars these days. Cheap insurance, Lots of room for a car this size. Cheap to operate. Can park anywhere in town.

Weakness:

Noisy, Not the fastest car made. Body panels could use some extra paint.

Got this car 5 years ago with 90,000 miles on it. Now it has 130,000. Cheap to maintain, great on gas. This car which has a MAZDA engine, is a non interference engine. Meaning, if the timing belt brakes, no problems. Just get it towed and replace the belt. No engine damage will happen. My belt slipped a few weeks ago, and that's how I found out, it having a non interference engine. If you find one, look into getting it. With Gas prices headed for over $4.00 a gallon. Always passes emissions, with low readings. My aspire still burns no oil. Great car for the price.

Strength:

Great gas mileage, very reliable, wear out items are cheap to replace. I like driving the car.

Weakness:

Although I have no dents, the body panals are very weak. I have broken 2 door windows already by doing nothing but shutting the doors with normal force.

Decent and reliable car. I use it for a commuter mainly. I bought it used for $3K with 40K miles in 1999. Eight years later and a total of 120K and I've only had to replace a wheel bearing and valve cover seal (about 30 minutes each done myself). I have done NOTHING else but basic replacement of parts that wore out like brakes, plugs etc..

I believe my specific car was a resold flood car from the mod 90's. I noticed a lot of sand under the carpet, it was repainted, and the Carfax history is a little odd. Either way, I've still had no problems with the car.

Where do I start? Well, this is the ugliest car on the market. If you want to get a good laugh from your friends, or feel more embarrassed than you've ever felt in your life, drive this car. It also is weaker than golf cart with a whopping 63 horse power.

Model Reviewed: Ford Aspire

Strength:

The Ford Aspire is great on feul economy. Head room is plentiful. With the rear bench folded forward, the Ford Aspire can haul as much stuff as a truck! Perfect first car, especially for new drivers. If driven properly the Ford Aspire needs only basic maintenance and can last well beyond 10 years, even if worked like a truck!

Weakness:

Body panels dent extremely easily. Frame does not absorb low speed impacts well. 63 Horsepower will not win any races, especially in a Front Wheel Drive car. Automatic Transmission shifts with a jerk. With the heavy stock 13 inch steel wheels and the long travel of the stock springs, the Ford Aspire does not handle well.

"Made by Kia Motors for Ford Motor Company" Check your VIN sticker, because this car is a Ford by name only! The body is made by Kia, and a Mazda 1.3 liter, inline four cylinder engine powers the little monster. Having been the owner of the Ford Aspire, also known as the Kia Avella in its native country South Korea, for 10 years, this car never ceases to amaze me. With only basic oil, spark plugs, and light bulbs, the car has managed to work like a truck and yet has not had to have any major mechanical repairs during my 10 years of ownership. It has survived two major accidents and has yet to fail to operate! The Ford Aspire, while not receiving any special recognition from the media, is the definition of the tough underdog. If anyone finds one for sale, don't hesitate to pick it up! Treat it right, and it will last a lifetime!

Strength:

cheap to fill up the paint is in mint condition as well as the interior. Has a lot of power for a little engine and it easy to get unstuck in the snow

Weakness:

distruber cap, dents easy, expensive to replace parts, wind pushes car around when really windy.

I have had the vehicle since it was brand new. It is in still pretty good shape. It has had its flaws over the many years. The distruber cap was cracked after the 2 year owning it (this caused a lot of problems but easy it fix)as well as a few other things. But after 5 years nothing else major except for the transmission which was expensive. It took the mechanics about 8 tries to figure out why my car would not start and this would happen everytime it was wet or very humid outside but everytime it got towed there it was would start. The computer they had said it was fine but they never did a complete inspection. Once they figured out what it was the distruber cap was cracked it was great from that point on.
