Weakness:

everything :D
i had to go and fix something almost every month!
wheel bearing
shoks
ball joints
muffler
trunk won'stay open
spark plugs
starter
many more!!

hello,
it was my first car, i really liked the way it looked and i took my brother with me to check it out. however he was used to cars that are more common in europe... he said itot was fine he never fixed a north american car before...
than he had to and both my valet and his temper hated it:)....
If it wasn't for him I would spend over 3000 on the car... i ended up spending 1000 not calculating winter tires or regular oil changes etc... i had problems with my brakes, wheel bearings, ball joints, the trunk wouldn't stay up... my shoks were horrible.... i have no idea what i was thinking when i bought it... i'm just saying that now i got rude of it and i would never buy one again.... but over all i liked it because it was the first car i have ever purchased and how can you not love your first car...

Strength:

Good mileage, fun to drive, more cargo space than you think, good styling.

Weakness:

Tends to be dangerous on wet pavement - beware of any standing water, no matter how little. It took several thousand dollars to get engine to run smoothly.

I loved the body style from first look and bought the car new. My Probe, a stick shift, four-cylinder, is fun to drive and gets very good mileage. Some find the ride rough. The hatchback design with a lift-out package tray means it can carry items you never thought possible, such as a household water heater in the box. You have to careful with the door windows because they don't much support and can't take rough handling. The windowns are not to be used for shutting the doors. About 25,000 miles, the car began to run rough under any load and I spent the next 75,000 miles and several thousand dollars getting to the bottom of it. Apparently it was a coil gone bad. A bad coil doesn't post a code in the computer, so no one could find it. Finally, a private shop found it . . . my instructions to them were: Please find the problem or call a wrecker and send the car to a junkyard. I take care of my cars, so it's a creampuff but the engine has spent most of its years as jerking and burping. Just a shame. The car tends to be a handful on wet roads that don't drain well. The factory tires hydroplaned often, rendering the car unstable and unpredictable. Replacement tires have helped, but don't let them wear too far down. Despite the lousy engineering/parts quality regarding the engine, I still like the car, especially the front end treatment.

Strength:

-Genuine sporty feel
-Wide tires
-Safe handling charatceristics when driven hard

Weakness:

-Weight distribution
-Clutch durability

I have an example from the last year of production. Over 7 years and 80K mi of ownership I have developed feelings for the car. It really is a fun car to drive. I think people often forget that this car was the class leader in the early-mid 90's, until the market responded with the revised Integra GS-R and turbocharged Eclipses. Even after that, the Probe GT compared favorably, at least in the eyes of American car enthusiasts. Most people know the car is an American-assembled Japanese-American mix with a Mazda chassis and powertrain. The engine is smooth and torquey and is mated with a very smooth 5 speed with slightly short gear ratios -- resulting in good acceleration but high 5th gear revs on the highway (4K RPM @ 80mph). Fuel economy is not very impressive compared to more contemporary engines (I get roughly 20mpg local) with the same output. Chassis performance is acceptable although not particularly stiff compared to today's sportier compacts. Ford was generous with the tire size at 225 front and back, which is somewhat of a crude way to solve handling and traction problems from this front heavy vehicle but it does get the job done. The suspension is noticably firmer than most cars, which is a great thing for enthusiasts since suspension is often one of the most compromised components in designing sporty coupes (although the Probe is tehcnically a hatch. The shape of the rear hatch gives the car a coupe-like appearance). From the outside, the car is styled and therefore the looks either still impress people or look very dated. I happen to like the exterior, but then again, I do own one. It is worth noting that at the time of production this car had the lowest coefficient of drag of any Ford.

From a driving standpoint this car delivers what one may not expect from numbers alone. The seats are supportive and at least in my GT, the lower back and adjustable lumbar hold the driver in place even under higher lateral loads. A nice medium between a regular and racing seat. I feel the steering ratio is a bit slow for my taste but works well at the limit in this front-driver. Clutch feel is very Mazda-like and the brake pedal is sensitive and will take adjustment time before you can modulate it well. Pedal placement is good and any configuration of your feet on the 3 pedals is doable. The car approaches its limits very gracefully and traction runs out gradually enough that you can adjust the gas to compensate. Textbook front wheel drive techniques work well with this car. Overall this car is much sportier feeling and fun to drive than faster cars such as today's Impreza WRX. In a straight line the car can do an honest 0-60 in the 7 seconds range and quarter in the 15's, which is fine by me. I do not drag race the car though, so during spirited driving on windy roads I would prefer lower weight and a little more weight distribution to the rear.

Maintainence issues have been so-so. I have had no major problems with my car, but apparently this is not the case with most Probe GT owners as this car is not known for reliability. But, I have driven the car hard for 7 years and I have taken care of it both in and out of use. I should note if you are just some moron looking for a car to dump the clutch at streetlights you should probably stay away from this car. If you are a true car enthusiast that can appreciate many aspects of the car you are driving, this car has lots to offer.

Strength:

This car is sexy, and has plenty of pick up from its 2.5L engine. The interior is very unique and modern looking and the seats are comfy in the front all though the back seats are cramped as with all 2+2's.

Weakness:

Expensive parts, can be heavy on gas depending on driving habits. Headlights are cool, but outdated. Alot of maintenance is crucial to prevent big problems.

I have bought a 94 PGT almost a year ago, it now has 168000km on it. I've had to replace an alternater, battery, spark plugs/wires, mass air flow sensor, y-pipe/flex/catylic, distributor, 2 oxygen sensors, PCV valve. These parts were all VERY expensive but alot of it was poor maintenance from previous owner. The car is now driving how it should. Only thing it needs is brakes, water pump, and a new oil pan becuz the exhaust is soo close to it it damaged it. I need a front wheel alignment as well. All in all, I love my Probe 5 spd, Gt It has some great features that came with it inludes 18" rims, twin 15"DVC subs, alpine 7" screen head unit, PS2, and a Ractive muffler that sounds pretty mean.

Strength:

It's a pretty car and normally has good pick up and power-when it's running well. It's been fairly dependable, but, it seems when there's a problem--it's a real wallet buster.

Weakness:

Those have been identified in the Review Summary. The most frequent problem is the alternator. I don't use the AC often since I have such a short trip to work and the radio/cd player(not stock)-picks up engine noise and hums over the broadcast, so, it's not used either. I've been very, very good to this car-but it's not returning the favor.

Bought the car in 1995. 294 miles on odometer for delivery from another city. Currently has 33,000 miles on odometer. I have replaced the alternator 4 times. The water pump went out and needed replaced recently, the brakes are a continuing problem. The car used to run so quietly you had to REALLY listen-but now sounds like a lawn mower. The linkage between the carburetor and transmission broke last year--over $800 to repair. The factory paint job did not last. The heat here in Texas had my teal metal fleck looking like a spotted heifer. Paint job at the local body shop---$1200.00. Yesterday, driving to work (3 miles)-an unusual noise???---RPMs went way up-vehicle barely moving--got to the office-called for a tow. The oil pump went out and the screen was occluded and burst.
They don't know yet if pieces of the screen went into the valves. Mechanic is quoting $847 at this time-but they don't know if they'll have to work on the valves until they get the oil stuff finished and can try to start the engine.

i had this car i loved it but the clutch went out and i got rid of it and i wish i had kept it but im getting another one and selling my truck to pay for the probe i had no problems with mine other than the clutch and a little smoking at low rpms and an alignment but other than that i had no problems with the car and the back seat is perfect not to big not to small and that car got me a lot of girls and it was fast the reason the clutch went out was becuase i put a turbo on it and let my freind drive it and he dropped the clutch and fried the clutch
a guy where i work bought it and fixed the clutch so it runs and drives now and i tryed to get him to sell it but is going to keep it for his son so i an out of luck

Strength:

Sporty looking
Reliable
MPG
Low cost
Massive trunk space
Lots of audio options

Weakness:

Factory paint fades really bad, small back seat, weather stripping under driver and passenger side door dry and crack-cost around $158 each. Not a lot of engine mods - turbo, superchargers and so on.

First of all id like to set you all straight my ford probe is a 4cyl. 2.0L manual Trans. It has 256,000 miles on it and doesn't complain one bit. There is a rattle however but all older cars will I'm not exactly sure it rattled before or after the woofer was installed. I've done some mods though (none to the motor-i’m afraid if I do it'll quit, but lets face it, it has 256k miles on it.) anyway I put a shogun body kit on(note to self-body kits=pain in a**) I wouldn't recommend them anyway. They don't fit and when there on they crack like crazy. Anyway so I got the body kit on picked out a color and finally got it painted after about 1.5 years. But it was my daily driver car so I mainly worked on it when I had time off. I re-wired the whole car so that it would support my stereo equipment; JL audio 12w6v2(sub),e1400d(mono amp),300/4(multi channel amp),xr650-csi(front speakers),xr570-cxi(rear speakers),XA-PCS2-2(dual amp wiring kit), Power Acustick 2.0 farad cap, Pioneer Premier DEH-P480MP(head unit), Optima side & top post battery. And now I've got the best system you can own. I used to have those cheesy looking stock 14 rims with the hub caps but took a trip to the wrecking yard and found a GT that still had its rims paid $100 for'em and had one of my dads friends sand blast them. I got them powder coated for $160 (flat black) and all in all I got rims for $260 can't beat that with a stick. As far as the ford probe goes if it really came down to it it’s got tons of miles on it, gets great MPG 26 city/33 highway sport looking and I only pay $58 month insurance. Being as it’s a 4cyl. Manual everything is extremely reliable and if something does go wrong it’s real inexpensive to fix. I've dropped somewhere around 3grand into it since I've had it. I’m so impressed by it that I never plan on selling it. Even with the sub and 2 amps the trunk is still massive. The back seat however is really compact so midgets only. But if you look on the doors the max load is 680Lbs I weight around 275-285 and am 6'1" and I fit fine in the seat, and it’s so comfortable. With all the audio equipment can probably hold only a passenger anyway - that’s with me in the by the way. But none the less I love my car.
