Strength:

Where to begin?! The car looks great, aggressive but not overdone like some other cars. Love the interior although there is a lot of plastic. The seats are great and hold you in place through the corners. The manual transmission in my GT is fun and helps get the best performance out of the engine. The stereo is strong and the engine is too above 2,500rpm. Brakes feel strong. Power everything, including moon roof! Hatchback versatility.

Weakness:

Parking break sticks, poor paint in certain areas though not bad looking from normal distance.

My Probe GT has been a great first car, and I recommend it to anyone who wants a sporty, good looking, and loaded car for a lot less than the same year Mustangs or any other performance car for that matter! My car has held up really well. Some minor squeaks on bumpy road but what 8 year old car doesn't? It's comfortable, cool, and fun to drive! Never thought a GM man like myself would say that about a blue oval car, but it's true!

Great looks, awesome handling, comfortable seats, plenty of passing power and ultra smooth quiet 24 valve engine, all for 20 grand out the door. For looks, handling and passing power this car can not be beat, skidpad rating is close to a corvette and passing power is world class. The engine now at 40k miles is even smoother and faster when i first bought it. Road grip in dry weather is just awesome. With back seats folded down can get my bike in the back, try that with other cars! Car is now 5 years old but it still draws attention where ever i drive it, one sexy looking machine. Have not had any mechanical problems with it except for having to replace the brakes after 20k miles.

Weakness:

Weaknesses in this car are few, as i mentioned above very bad brakes. The heating/cooling system takes a while to get to temptature, the wiper blades on the raked windshield have a hard time keeping it clear and there is a slight shimmy coming from the left rear of the car, minor problems thou.Driving car in the snow is a little iffy but not to bad if you use a lower gear, mine is automatic.

For 20k out the door this car was a bargin. Awesome looks that havent aged, world class passing power and handling and a smooth quiet multi valve engine that just keeps getting better and better. Car has taken wrap for the crappie base versions that were put out, but gt model was a diamond in the rough. Giving car to girlfriend and i am about to upgrade to a mustang gt or a pontiac gtp, any input on what to buy would be appreciated.

Damn this car is quick, slap on a few mods and she fly's. I currently have a boost controller and open cone air filter and run a 15 flat in the quarter mile....Not bad. Handles great, ride adjustment is pretty cool, I like all the extras like trip computer, speed sensitive steering, and this car is sexy!

Weakness:

Torque over-steer is a pain, especially when you increase boost. But Im currently running without my powersteering and that helps alot. Parts are a hassel to get and not to mention pricey!

All in all I love my "Turbo", I get ALOT of comments on my car. I bought her in the summer of 97 for 4500 with 73000 original miles in MINT condition. Very easy car to make really fast, being a turbo. All of you Probe lovers check out www.probetalk.com awesome Probe site!!!

Weakness:

Its buit by Ford. Expect things to break

I once had the passive mentality if its a car and it moves I don't car how fast it goes and how it looks. Some people never change this mentality.
Others need a little motivation. For me that motivation was a 1990 Ford Probe LX. This car left a lasting impression on me. Never before had i had so much fun driving. It finally made sence, it wasnt the goal at the end it was the drive. But eventually my Lx after a while had given me so many problems I knew eventually when I would get the newer Gt model these problems would follow me to there. But it was one of those I had to get the car kinda things. I just had to have one. Its looks and performance are great, its ability to corner at high speeds is breathtaking. My friends and I were all surprised to see how fun and uncompromising this car was. That was until every little thing went wrong. But despite what others may say. The negative in build quality and reliability cannot dissuade the fun I am having while revving and running rampant in Miami. Something's are worth the trouble I believe this car is one of them. There is a certain sense of pride as you look toward your car with its visible Gt logo and lowered appearance. With its Gt stylings and mid to high revving engine. It may not have the best build quality in the world. But it still manages to out perform and even compete with some of the cars that were built 7 years after its time. With every car you are bound to have some sort of problem. If you can get over the fact that Ford built this car there is no doubt that fun lays waiting.

Amazing torque and pick-up, great handling, gas mileage, 115k without ever any work besides maintenence, 130 mph for an 11 year-old car, compression like 3 year old car, same sparkplugs...the list goes on and on....

Weakness:

some body rust doors/fenders from ohio winters. 3rd gear the weakest, electrical systems of Ford are not the best (known for windshield wipers getting stuck in upright position, but just switch the summer/winter switch

This is a great car for those who want all the pep you'll ever need, and all the reliability you can handle. It's amazing that this 4-cylinder 2.2L will keep up with a supercharged 6-cylynder 3.8L, even if it is only a one-lb. "supercharger" (why bother?).
If the Probe has not been abused, you'll love it for the rest of its life.

tranny slips then gives out.. i did put a new tranny a week ago so its going like new... seatbelt are pain should of used the standard.. headlights dont come up the same time one is slower than the other.
struts are spendy exspeacially the ride controlled equipped. eats gas when driving in town.. country good...

i have done numbers of things to it to make it perform better and smoother... 91 gt and 95 gt are the best probe you can get... i am still going to lower it 1 to 2 inches and put body kit and spoiler too...

Strength:

Bullet-proof reliability, Excellent Gas mileage, HUGE cargo area, Wraparound cockpit, peachy 2.5 V6, sleek looks

Weakness:

Cop-magnet, crows feet in paint, door rattles when glass is down.

Well, I had just graduated College in the summer of 99 and was looking to buy my first car. Took me months to decide what I wanted to buy, but it simmered down to a nice black PGT with a MTX.
I purchased it in 1999 with 54,000 miles on it, now with 70,000. All I have to say is "wow". FORD has nothing to do with it. 90% of the vehicle is Mazda engineered (ford Only designed the body and some suspension work).

Performance - The car is very tight and quick to dart around a corner and still stay in your lane. Pickup is snappy for a compact car, and the power starts low. You can easily do a REAL (aka no fake e-brake crap) burnout from around 3000 RPM. Most of this car's power is in the 2/3's LOWER half of it's RPM range (Peak RPM at 7000, Max power and torque around 5400). The brakes are excellent although there is some fade after extended use from high speeds. Highest I've had it is 120MPH on I-95, and the maximum speed is 137MPH stock. The suspension is another piece of art. It's firm, but not kidney-jarring, and the car Loves to take turns at 2.5x the posted limit without much drama.

The gas mileage is excellent for a sports car. I warm up my car in the morning for 5 minutes, and get 20 MPG with "aggressive" driving (fast pickups, fast turns).. otherwise, you're looking at ~23MPG. On the Highway, it's a different story. On my move from NYC to South FLorida, the car used less than 4 tanks of gas ( one tank before low fuel light = 13.5 gallons). MY MPG on that trip (Loaded with ~800 pounds of cargo) was 30.4 MPG. Imagine driving for 7-8 Hours, on one little 13.5 gallon tank :). (infact it was a 20 Hour driving trip with short fuel and food stops)

In the looks department, the car outclasses itself by far. It looks like a mid-engined exotic when viewed from certain angles. I've had people catch up to me in traffic and ask about it, what year, model etc. It just has all the right curves in all the right places. It's also a unique car, so you get more looks than the everyday corvette, mustang etc.. I'd say it's in the same class as it's cousin, the 3rd gen Mazda RX-7. (understand that and you'll understand this)

Another advantage to it's profile is that there is virtually no windnoise. none. nada. Also, I can't remember when is the last time i've used my wipers when driving (the water just slicks over the car-cool eh?)

On the VALUE side of the car, you cannot go wrong - a stout V-6 with low miles for an average 6-9K (when I was purchasing mine)? Comparable 4 bangers with less HP and torque (Integra, eclipse, celica) were way over-priced for what they bring to the game. Add the Mazda drive-train and other parts, and you're looking at something that's hard to beat. You don't have to wind up the engine to near peak RPM to get performance out of it (compared to most imported compacts).

Reliability - Everything is over-engineered. Taken care of properly, this car is awesome. The only problem i've had was my CV boots tore (which happens with every car) So i replaced the boots the same week with high quality rubber for $5/boot.

The only downside I would say is the paintjob. THe gloss on the paint is great, but the paint itself has lots of little cracks called spiderwebs.
The doors rattle a bit when you close them when the glass is down, but they do make a nice sound if you close in like a garage. THE AUTOMATIC transmission is NOT recommended for these cars (particularly the PGT). Reason being, the car is driven hard (either by you or the previous owner), and the automatic dosen't handle it that well except with some upgrades.

Overall, the car is not the best of everything. Sure there are better looking cars, sure there are cars that can go faster.. But the PGT blends all these features into a very nice package. I would tell anyone who takes care of their vehicle and wants something that's FUN, Reliable, economical, sporty, and sleek, go to your dealer and take a test drive in a PGT. Strength:

*Awsome road handling especially for a cheaper sports car.
*Fair amount of tourque and HP.
*I love all the digital electronics - its very accurate.
*The system scanner has come to be quite handy also.
*Many power options and features.
*Sunroof adds a nice touch.
*Has a fairly good factory system in it (only if you hook your own sub up to the amp) their sub is a little cheesy and weak. Although I did replace their stereo with a Pioneer CD receiver.
*Very fast.
*Little rust, only if you have Aluminum/Alloy rims.
*This car has great take of power and all around punch-down power when passing. I've beat quite a few trucks and cars when taking off from the stop light.
*Doesn't do to bad on gas either, get about 25-35 mpg respectively.
*Also has nice size hatch to through your stuff in.
*Also very comfortable and quiet when driving (providing the exhaust is in good condition).
*A lot of room in the front seats

Weakness:

*Transmission is really whimpy and expensive to fix.
*Paint job also is no good
*Expensive parts
*Loud windshield wiper motors when car is at idle, when up to speed you can't hear them.
*Pain to work on underneith when changing transmission fluid filter and fluid or replacing gasket on oil pan. Cross members are always in the way.
*Driver's side power seat linkage gets twisted up easily.
*Motor mounts go bad rather quickly for those whose like to hot-rod around
All my mounts accept one are shot because the kid I bought my car from always jumed on the gas. Stupid! Most 4 banger parts are not made for prolonged hot-rodding. Get something with a bigger engine if you want to do some serious racing and hot-rodding. If you don't you'll pay for it, trust me.
*CV joints arn't the strongest
*Back brakes don't remain equilized with the front (even when new pads and drums, etc.. are replaced)
*Stereo system is not very loud, good bass, but no real volume
*Small back seats - little room
*Key locks all around go bad, this includes ignition, trunk, and ignition.
*Interior gets dusty very easily when driving on dirt roads,(even when windows are shut, and pressure relief flaps are working properly)
*Cruise Control will occasionally stick if you shift into neutral while it is engaged - safety switch wiring in shifter is ofen faulty because of this.

As far as I'm concerned, who ever designed the 4EAT (4-speed Electronic Automatic Transmission) transmission was a poor engineer. The trani's really suck in these cars, and they are very expensive to fix even if your fix them yourself. The only reason I paid 1100 for this car was because the transmission was shot. Little to my knowledge, did I know that these cars were known for tranny problems. I talked to several mechanics and they all gave me repair quotes for over $2,000 to repair my tranny. To boot, they all said that they only repaired 2-3 of these transmissions and said they would never rebuild one again unless they were paid no less then $2,000. There was no way I was going to pay someone 2,000 for rebuilding my tranny so I did it my self. Trust me you'll save a load of money if you do your own work. It only cost me $800.
I also now have problems with the motor burning oil. Most likely the rings are shot.
I've had to replace almost all the seals in the motor accept for two of them. Parts are also very expensive. I wouldn't recommend a Probe unless you have the money keep up with them.
Also like others have said, the car doesn't stay to warm in the winter. But for those of you who just jump in the car and take off, your running the risk of freezing up your radiator and wreaking your engine. Let the car warm up for at least 20min, with the heat in the car only on 1/4 - 1/2 (not full speed) it works, even in 30-40 below weather.

I love the pick-up in this car...sleek styling....very good handling...23 MPG(can't complain with that)...overall low maintanence(except for the cv joint that went out due to hotrodding)....overall good first car

Weakness:

the interior could use a little bit of work(its all plastic)...a lot of rattles on bad road and with the system bumping( 2 12's in the back) doesnt help....

I must admit....this car has some balls but not enough....could use a little bigger engine with some more HP's....it kept up with a friends 95 Camaro(lost but still beside him the whole way)....i have 17" cobra rims on there now and it looks sweet....i plan to put a borla intake and 4 1/2" cherry bomb on the back....a supercharger is on the way....hopefully everything will go as planned....come back in 3 months(more than willing to race you then)...can't say enough about this car....handles great..good gas mileage...gets the chicks...absolute great first car...would recommend to the first buyers....
