Strength:

attractive car
can haul a lot in the trunk

Weakness:

windows and doors rattle
floor in hatch and drivers side gets wet when it rains
CV boots break often
transmission problems
seat belts do not work properly
back seat cramped
air conditioning does not work and is very expensive to repair
parts expensive and hard to find

I would not recommend this car to my worst enemy! We've had a lot of problems with it during the 10 years we have owned it. We've had to replace numerous CV boots because they break constantly. We had to replace a seatbelt because it wouldn't tighten up properly. The air conditioning broke years ago and costs more to fix than the car is worth. The windows and doors rattle constantly and the windows leak. When the car frosts up, we have to scape the INSIDE and outside of our windows which is very annoying. When it rains, the carpets in the hatch and drivers side get wet and mildew. The smell is hard to get rid of. From what I've been told, this car is prone to a lot of transmission, electrical and A/C problems. We've had trouble with all of these things to some degree. I wouldn't recommend this car to anyone who isn't able to fix the car themselves since it breaks down a lot and is very expensive to repair.

Strength:

Fast 5 speed that embaresses a lot of cars of the road. Front console and seats are very comfortable. Two-toned seats look real sporty. Good looking, but mine is kind of ashy around the rear right fender and the bottom corner of driver door.

Weakness:

Back seat space, but my dad's jaguar XK8 has far less room so I can;t complain. I had some rough idling a while ago but I got a tune up and it's been somewhat behaved. Fuel injection line prone to clogging. Expensive ass parts, especially the engine wires. Hatch lifts are dead. Poor suspension. Noisy and treacherously ratchety on bumpy roads. The plastic interior. Highway engine speeds.

I bought this car a year ago and I shopped around for maybe a month. I saw some people with thiers really worn out bad. Anyway when I got mine I couldn't drive a stick but I learned once I got it. I think all the learning has worn the clutch a bit, because I'm having acceleration problems now. So when I got the car about a month later it wouldn't stay up when I tried to crank it. I had to crank it up and give it gas in order for it to stay up. The next day my pals at the shop told me it was a fuel injection problem and it's been using a bottle of injector cleaner about twice a month since. Also hotrodding the engine cleans it out well.

I drive on the highway a lot and I really have issue with the engine speed around 70mph. It sounds about the way an engine would sound doing about 90. My Saturn was cruisin at like 75 nice and mellow. The Probe acts really sheepish at high speeds and I don't really like that. I drove up here to New York in July and the ride was nice and smooth....cruise all the way there. I had my radio blasting so I couldn't hear the engine. Once here, the rough pavement put this car to shame. You go over graveled pavement and it sounds like you're under a landslide. Really not cool when you have people in the car.

The great thing about this car is it's just cool to ride out in. Inside is real comfortable and pleasing to the eye. Nice and simple interior unless you have some modifications. Love how the door doesn;t have a frame around the window. Sometimes I'm riding and I step out at the grocery store and feel like Michael Knight. I plan on keeping it until I am financially comfortable enough to afford something meaner and more luxurious.

-Pretty Strong Acceleration
-Strong Transmission (So Far)
-Price I paid for it with 62,000 miles

Weakness:

-Exhaust Rusted and Fell Off
-Oil Leak
-CV Axles are shot
-New brake pads and rotors

$1500 for a car with 62,000 miles on it is a steal anyway I look at it. I never thought I would buy a Ford, but it is a pretty good car. However, my next car is going to have to be a new Trans Am.

This car isn't really all that fast. I tried racing an Eagle Talon ESI Turbo and I stuck with it all the way. At least until about third gear and then my car started to fade. It performs a lot better now that I put Ram Air in it though.

Looks, Handling Handling Handling.

Weakness:

Rattle and Hums (What 8 year old car doesn't on NY roads?), Hatch lifts, Rear Calipers.

Bought this vehicle brand new. Very agile and fun to drive. Handles like a sports car should. Will not beat a Mustang GT off the line, but you'll lose him and most other sport car wannabes in the turns. Have had some quirky problems over the years, but nothing major. (Rear Brake caliper locked up, hatch lifts died, driver window gasket whistling a little after 8 years.) A great little car that I enjoy driving now as much as the day I got it back in 93.

Strength:

Handling is great in the turns, car handles like Iverson one on one. Acceleration is ok stock, even better with a prm intake and exhaust. Still looks good, head turner, people don't believe its a 93. Stock exhaust sounds good even better with aftermarket upgrade. Very few around, unlike stangs and bmw 3 series and such. Very very reliable. Maintenance summary in 3 years and 10 months: Replace valve cover $200 or so. Battery $45. CV joint $60. Cigarette lighter $110 (due to my own fault, let some change get down there and i think i shorted something out). No joke. Other than that synthetic oil every 3k or so.

Weakness:

The paint on mine absolutely sucks. I have calypso green and the hood color is fading like michael jordan on a turn around jumper. Leaky valve cover, replaced once for about $200 about 1.5 years ago and its leaking again, so its burning oil. Still have yet to fix it. Squeaks squeaks squeaks from the rear hatch area.

I absolutely love this car. This car was purchased by the original owner in october of 1992. I bought this car with 40000 miles in june 1997 and it now has 103000+ miles with very few maintenance problems other than ones i listed above. The owner previous to me fed the engine nothing but synthetic and I have done the same. The engine is soooo quiet. I still have yet to change the coolant and fuel filter. I paid it off in january 2001 and have no plans of getting another car until this one gives up the ghost. I love driving this car every day, it has a good balance of of power and handling. I have a few minor upgrades that add to performance which are: prm intake, aftermarket exhaust (sorry the name slips me but it sounds awesome and makes car alarms chirp), ngk wires, 17 wheels. Exterior styling was ahead of its time. Interior amenities are also excellent , cd player with equalizer, subwoofer/amp (subwoofer never worked when i bought it so i threw in some old kicker woofers i had laying around from my old car, reran the wires and called it a day), power driver seat, pw, pdl, sunroof, alarm, clicker. The only option my car lacked was leather. The only reason i gave it 4 stars for the overall rating is because of the paint (dont let me get started on that) and just recently my cd player stopped working. Still, I would recommend the probe gt to anyone considering buying a used car.

owned 84 honda prelude...much better overall
drove parents volvo 87 740 turbo for a couple of years...handles much better.
88 audi 90...blows it away...car was so weak its pathetic not to mention in the shop every other week, pos.
g/f 2000 honda accord v6...well, tough competitor, rides much much smoother than my trusty probe, very quiet cabin, low road noise, doesnt handle as well in the turns as the probe,...more backseat room...engine noise outside car when idling: my probe actually sounds quieter at 103000+ miles running synthetic oil compared to the accord running generic oil. acceleration..:well hard to tell the accords an automatic so when mashing down on the gas at 70mph the car hesitates even if you manually put it into 3rd gear; if you drop the probe into 3rd at 70mph, you better be wearing a seatbelt. I think my probe is still better in the acceleration department.
g/f 1996..4 cylinder Cavalier...a joke...but very reliable until she traded it with 42k miles for the 2000 accord.

Model Reviewed: Ford Probe BASE

Strength:

*very smooth and sleek body
*popup headlights
*really good cornering, gripping of pavement
*roomy interior for car of smaller size
*great trunk size

Weakness:

*paint (heard way too many instances of paint problems, too)
*hard to shift into second sometimes (probably just my car)
*expensive to repair and insure
*needs more power at low rpms until about 3,500 rpms.
*noisy and bumpy ride

The Dodge Intrepid was a great car for Dodge. More horsepower and quicker off the line than the Ford Probe. Smoother ride, too. However, I love my Probe. It is only a base model, but I dream about adding features to it. I love looking at it - great looking car. It's just plain fun to drive. The cornering and tight gripping make it a blast, and the engine provides a enough power to make it crazy to drive. If you can get one, any model, for a good deal - GET IT!!! It'll be one of the best buys of your life. If I had A LOT of money, I'd buy as many Ford Probes as I could get my hands on! That, and Dodge Stealths, Mitsu 3000GTs, and Corvettes.
