Strength:

Strong engine, great handling, good looks, comfortable, pretty good gas mileage and very reliable when well maintained.

Weakness:

Small back seat, hard to find parts for compared to some other cars.

I love this car so much. This is the ideal car for a younger person who wants a good looking, well handling fast car. The back seat is pretty small so is every other car's back seat in the Probe's class. While it won't keep up with a 5.0 or 4.6 Mustang it'll outrun about any stock 4 or 6 cylinder cars on the road. Stock Hondas don't have a chance unless it's a very new Si, and ever then they're about the same. These cars are as much fun to drive as anything I've ever driven and I own a 1966 mustang 289. The engine, suspension and looks of the car make it an A+ vehicle. I would recommend the 5 speed because I've heard too many complaints about the automatic. I just bought a 94 GT with an auto tranny so I'll find out soon I guess.

Strength:

Torquey and reliable Mazda motor. Periodic care of simple maintenance items will almost gurantee this will be the best car you have ever owned. Great handling. Great gas mileage attained with the 5 speed manual transmission (31 mpg). The 2.0 DOHC Mazda motor has been known to see 300,000 miles. Trunk is large enough to hold 5 bodies...if you're in the Mafia. The sportiest car you can pick up for under 3500 dollars, unless you get into fox-body mustangs.

Weakness:

None, but these maitenance items should be periodically adressed for ultimate reliability and performance: 1. O2 sensor replacement every 60,000 miles. 2. Automatic TRANSMISSION COOLER installed for the automatic transmission, with fluid changes every 30,000 miles. 3. Mass Air Flow Sensor cleaned every 15-20,000 miles, using brake cleaner. 4. Idle Air Control Valve cleaned every 20,000 miles using carburetor cleaner. -All of these maitenance items are extremely simple, and every make and model of car requires an equal amount of maitenance. If these very few items are taken care of, this car is almost assured to last years and years. (Probetalk.com) is a great resource for maitenance, and general discussion on the car.

Great car. I wouldn't buy anything except Fords, but this has a Mazda motor, so it's even better! Every GM car I've owned has been crap, and a 2.5L Olds I had caught on fire and almost killed my brother, not to mention the '85 4.3L Astro I had that had severe blowby at 100K miles, even though it was meticulously maintained! The 2.0L Ford Probe has a great motor. I've driven this thing all over the place and have had almost no problems. I know the problem area to keep an eye on, so once those items have been routinely checked, the car is about as reliable as anyone could ask for. The Mass Air Flow Sensor requires cleaning every 15K miles, but it only requires that you pull the sensor off of the intake, take the metal screen off of the sensor, and spray the little wire filaments with brake cleaner. The Idle Air Control valve requires occasional cleaning also, but again, this is another easy job. Tech write-ups can be found on (www.Probetalk.com). I highly recommend a manual transmission with this car, but if you do happen to get an automatic transmission, make sure you get a TRANSMISSION COOLER installed, and put in sythetic tranmission fluid, if at all possible. This transmission is known for being succeptable to heat damage, so a TRANSMISSION COOLER is almost a mandatory thing. Once these few problem areas are addressed, I can almost gurantee this car will be the best car you have ever owned. If you think GMs are so good, then go buy the cars I listed, or buy a mid-90s Pontiac with the Quad-4 motor, or an S-10 with the 2.2 L motor, and report back to me in 6 months about how glorious all of GM's cars are.

Strength:

DriveTrain - In general for a 2.5l motor this car can really cook. Transmission - Will support good power. Try not to run your tranny out of fluid!) Handling - I'll run circles around a Mustang or Camaro at an autocross. Sometimes going straight isn't the only fun involved in driving a car. Style - Off the chart and ahead of its time! This car is not a butthole! Not everyone has one.

Weakness:

Distributor, Ok this is a given however if you do a little research there are several economical options available to replace it.

First like with any car, you MUST maintain it. And likewise with any car there will be weak points. I see quite a few negative reviews here. This car is a Phenominal MACHINE when it is cared for. DON'T HATE. Just cause you're too lazy to change your oil and check your brakes and what nots. I could chase down any damn Honda Civic any day. Not to say that I don't like them, because I have owned three of them. But you can't confuse sports car with gas getter in my book. Sorry to be so negative I am just sick of people picking on my car, I like and if you don't. DON'T LOOK!

awesome car. electric blue, neat and sexy style for a 11 year old car. fast, good gas milage, perfect driving performance with 17" performance wheels and cold air intake. for the winter time here in massachusetts i use studded tires. with front wheel drive perfect handling - i love my car every day i drive it.

Strength:

good looks, great handling, reliable engine and suspension, great cargo room.

Weakness:

Engine should have been about 80 horses juicier from factory. Relatively expensive parts. and like most sports cars, tight engine compartment.

I have been reading the Probe GT reviews and I juat had to say a few words... If you're poor and barely afford to pay rent especially students and such don't buy a sporty car and cry about the costs of fixing it. I own 3 probes 93GT manual, 95 GT auto and 97 GTS manual. The 97 GTS has about 9500 miles on it because I only drive it on special ocasions and it has a lot of modyfications but the my other two probes have 130000 and 150000. They are both very stock and never had any transmission problems, ignition problems, or engine block related problems. However major maintenance is due on these cars at around 90000. If you fail to replace the distributor cap and rotor, spark plug wires, timing belt, fuel filter, transmission filter on time, then yes you will start wanting to set it on fire soon after 90000 miles. Do I agree about the price of parts? Yes I do. I think parts are a bit more expensive than plain domestic cars but that is something you should look into before you lay out your few thousand dollars on a used probe. Also for those who don't understand much about cars and only listen to comercials: Whether it is a Honda, Subaru , Mitsubishi, Chevy, Ford, etc it will give you as much trouble as you give IT meaning that the harder you drive your car whatever it may be, the more problems you will have especially if you do not provide it with proper maintenance on time. Quit your complaining and think before you buy any kind of car. The way you take care of your car is the way you will have it.

This car is awsome I am 18 and I like going fast. This car is in mint condition, Every thing works and work well, it has a 2.5L V6 24 Valve DOHC, and I love the 5 speed tranny. I have heard about the auto trans going out but my manuel works great i love 1st and 2nd. The second day I had it, I got on the freeway and got it up to 137 MPH in 4th. I have raced a couple of cars and beat them all. These are the cars Ive raced, 1999 Couger, 2003 Civic SI, 1996 Eclipse, 2002 Maxima,1990 Acura Legend, and on top end off a roll I took a 2004 Mazda RX8 I creeped away between 130 to 135 MPH. I want to put a Turbo and some other small mods but for the most part keep it looking stock.

Weakness:

Everything Unreliable bad interior design Engine deteriorates fast

If you need a dependable car, then this is the last car you would ever want to buy. I have two other friends who have the gt model and they have more problems then I do. The only positive thing I can say about the car is that it has good pickup. Where do I begin with problems. The first problem is the window design. When you're going fast on a highway the window will push out a little and create a whistling noise. The engine is really loud and unreliable. The engine randomly chooses not to work. It turns over but is unable to idle unless some gas is given. My friend said it was an oxygen sensor problem that he had, but I have completely baffeled three mechanics with it. The interior is completely falling apart. The handles are weak and break if they are pulled in a wierd dirrection. It also smokes like a steam locamotive. When I leave in the morning, I leave my own fog behind that doesn't dissapate for upwards of ten minutes. Summary: this car is crap.

Mazda built engine, decent mpg, great handling, OK power, drop dead gorgeous, not many on the road

Weakness:

interior quality, auto transmission can get cranky, braking. Part of the reason I love my car is that I get to work on it now and then. If you aren't good with a wrench, get a GM

I enjoy my vehicle very much. It is a top-of-the-line GTS model, which is basically a GT with 4-wheel discs, chrome wheels, and racing stripes. My mom's Taurus is faster, but nothing will take a curve like my Probe. My car is by far the funnest thing I've ever driven. I love it! Before owning this car, I drove a 93 Probe 2.oL that was a bucket of bolts. Everything was wrong with it. I still loved it. My car, on the other hand, is in great shape. This just goes to show that if you take care of a car the right way, it will treat you well for a long time. I plan on putting a little $$ into it to make it even better...yknow, intake, exhaust, turbo or supercharger, headwork, that sort of thing. Soon, it will be able to run with the Celicas and look better than the BMWs.

Handles great, accelerates easy, easily modded. Great gas mileage.

Weakness:

Needs a lot of TLC to keep running well.

I haven't driven a lot of cars in my life, maybe five or six, but this has to be my favorite. It's quick, accelerates easily and hits 100 in no time, and aside from maintenance issues that I have to address in the near future (due to my part) it's perfect. Cosmetically, these cars have problems with their paint wearing easily. This can be remedied by a new paint job, of course. But Ford...Bah.

Umm...the most similar car I've driven is a Dodge Intrepid or Chevy Lumina. The other cars have been SUVs and vans...
