Strength:

Overall, it would be an O.K. vehicle, but not if it only lasts 47,000 miles.

Weakness:

Reliability, durability, transmission, air conditioner, Ford Customer Service Division.

This car was purchased new and has had a very gentle life. Regular service and maintenance, garaged, and very low mileage at 47,000 miles. It has had no hard or abusive driving. In the past year I have spent some $1,200 for various repairs including new engine mounts. I have driven many cars in my life. I always take excellent care of them and tend to keep them for long periods of time. I never have had to have the engine mounts replaced even on cars with many more miles. Now the Ford dealer tells me it will cost $500 to repair the air conditioning and about $2,900 to replace the transmission. Apparently the 1994 Taurus, among other years and models, has a bad reputation for premature transmission failures caused by a cracked forward clutch piston. Regardless of the purchase price, I find it outrageous that any auto manufacturer with any pride or integrity would produce a product that, when properly maintained, would have such a major failure at just 47,000 miles. I just read last week in the local paper an article on Ford suggesting, among other things, that Ford should stand for "Fix or Repair Daily." Look at Ford's recent financial performance and it is clear that it has a major quality problem, notwithstanding its various claims that "quality is job number one." William Clay Ford, Jr., Chairman and CEO of Ford, stated in his Chairman's Message to Ford shareholders on March 14, 2002, "Our first priority is to improve our product quality." Based upon my experience, that is no great revelation. I will never buy another Ford.

Mt ford means everything to me. First when i was looking for a car i wanted room, power, looks and something different. With all the other teenagers driving hondas to see me behind a taurus is different. So far i have had really no problems at all. Sometimes my winshild wipers go off with out me turning them on. But the car is known for crapy electrical system. I have the bottom line engine 145HP, it may not be alot of power but it keeps up with others. So far i have added a new muffler that increased looks and sound, got supper white lights and added a chip to the car. I will always love my ford

Model Reviewed: Ford Taurus SHO

Strength:

-Great mid-to-high range performance: with four adults and a full tank of gas this car (over 4000 lbs) will ably scream to 115 and then growl its way to 135 -25 mph gallon on the freeway driving 75 to 95 mph with the a/c on---with a v8 -impressive handling -comfortable seats -actual room for 4 normal sized adults -good breaks -big trunk

Weakness:

While this car is easy to praise it also has some glaring faults: -Ford muted a lot of this car's potential get up and go, ergo, for an even better SHO, aftermarket exhaust, modified intake, et cetera are necessary. -the chrome wheels are rather gaudy -I don't care if the MACH stereo is "premium," it just isn't very good. -unnecessary down shifting, not a fault but curiously present -lack of manual gearbox -poor city gas miliage but that's the price of the v8 -handles great but it rides a little too bumpy over slight bumps and paving spots.

Great overall package. The V8 SHO is a genuine sleeper that when awakened, has a tendency to stun other drivers and occupants alike. It's not a rocket off the line but the trip up to the 6800 rpm red-line is really a blast. The only hint of this car's capabilities is the menacing daul exhaust and rear SHO labeling. The ovalesque styling, both exterior and interior is really profound but is easy to become sickened of as you see it daily on the other 2 million Tauri on the road. However, the ground affects and unique rear spoiler are nice touches. I see the facade of my car forty times a week but have only seen five other V8 SHOs on the road. That admixture of commonality and my shared, personal joy that one feels knowing what lurks under the hood while other drivers don't, makes for a unique automobile personality. Obviously, not all drivers will like so subtle a sports cedan. Overall, the SHO truly competes with similar 4 door sedans from BMW, Audi, and Acura but those who own these foreign cars will never admit to it because they are ashamed of the price they paid.Let them keep their pride. New, a SHO is a little pricey but since you can't get them fresh from the factory any more, a used one is an unsurpassable bargain that will please the daily driver looking for something suprisingly above expectations considering the investment.

Strength:

200HP 24-valve DOHC V6 engine, spacious, comfortable, luxiourious interior, strong handling.

Weakness:

Outer body, 1-second delay when you push the pedal to the metal (Ford engine).

This car is one of my favorite to ride in. Under the hood and within the doors is what I like mostly.. When we first bought it I didnt like the body at all, but I took a drive and fell in love. This car wants to go. On a slight hill going 40, the car will speed to 45 on its own in about 5-10 seconds. The interior, with the entire digitial display, seating, everything, makes for a nice ride. Its interior is great for music listening, and the 24-valve DOHC 200HP V6 makes sure you don''t fall asleep while listening to your music. Oh, and if youre on a tight bend that you couldn''t anticipate at high speeds, this car will help you out.. Handles well at speeds above 35 on tight bends.. If you dont make it, well, be sure to feel safe, from 98-2002 this car won #1 in Govt. Frontal Crash Test Ratings..

Weakness:

Everything onder the hood. Ford says enough.

Very spacious car (back seats, trunk, etc). This a perfect family car. But... Awfull transmission, had to change the gearbox @ 70K miles. As soon as I hit the 100K miles the car started falling apart (electronics). I do not feel all that save in this car. I would not advice anybody to buy this car but than again you don''t pay much. This will be the last ford I''ll buy EVER.

Weakness:

The whole car.

We purchased this car in the summer of 1993. It had 25000 miles. The problems started from the get go. I had taken it in for a recall and had the front end aligned also. $350 later the front end was finally aligned. Then both boots on the CV joints ripped. Then the A/C compressor went out, then the tranny, the brakes, the wiper motor, and the water pump. The body is rusting to pieces and the check engine light won''t go out.

Strength:

Heavy duty Good mileage Rides nicely Fairly comfortable except for sleeping (body conformation/angles not right somehow) Great trunk area Nice styling even if everything is an oval Seats are comfortable for driving for long periods

Weakness:

None.

This is a great family car. My oldest had a head on crash and the car barely dented on the outside (the inside was another matter) and she wasn''t hurt at all. There is plenty of leg room. The car is substantial and has get up and go as well as great mileage. Had rented a Buick Century to take college trips the spring before we bought this and it was a nightmare to sit in for any length of time and it felt cramped and had average handling. Taurus is a better product by far. We bought this with 11,000 miles on it; year old. Great!!

SAFETY! SAFETY! SAFETY! ONE OF THE BEST ON THE MARKET. I KNOW FIRST-HAND!

Weakness:

Interior amenities. A little wind noise, standard features in some models are substandard in comparison to industry rivals (Dodge, Chevy, Honda, Toyota, etc.)

Had my car for almost four years. This Ford #6. Had a 89 Taurus GL, 94 Escort GT, 94 Probe GT, 95 Escort Wagon, 97 Ranger XLT, and this car. Overall, I love the car. Car has had more than $12000 worth of collision damage in four different accidents and still drives just as good as the day I purchased it. Man ran red light and tore entire front end off of my car, lady rear-ended me on the highway at 40mph while I was at a stop for traffic. I drove away with a cracked bumper and a dragging right muffler, her 97 Chrysler Cirrus was completely totaled. Had a 89 Taurus GL. Wife was run off the highway at 5 a.m. by an 18-wheeler. Car rolled over five times in the medium. Wife only suffered a mild cocussion and the car was actually repaired 8000 later; and again drove just as well after the accident as before. I''m sold on the Taurus, but Ford could listen to it''s customers more. Only major problems with any of my Ford''s was a transmission on the 89, minor wiring on the 98, and minor wiring on the 97 Ranger. Other than that, all of them have been dependable cars for the money.
