Strength:

I like this car because it rides well, handles nicely, and you can hardly hear the engine (I have the 3.0 liter). It is easy to work on (I do all maintenence myself) and I have had no major problems.

Weakness:

The only problem I have had is the famous speedometer acting up. If you are considering purchasing a Taurus, test drive it and get it up to 65 M.P.H. If the speedometer needle stays in one place while you are holding a constant speed, you are OK at least for now. What is happening is the speedometer cable is binding when it twists, making the speedometer go wild. You can get the generic brand cable for under $10 at Advance Auto Parts, but the cruise control will not work. The Ford version of fixing it costs $100's. Basically, what I am saying is don't buy one if the speedometer is acting funny because it is expensive to fix right. Other than that, my '95 Taurus has been a great car.

I recommend the Taurus because it is a good, safe, spacious, and reliable car with only a few minor drawbacks.

This is my first car but I can tell you right off hand that it will serve you better than any similar Honda, Toyota, or anything else Japaneese. I do not say this to be predjudist, I just do not believe that the Japaneese make cars with the quality you will find in an American or European car (Volkswagon, etc...)

Strength:

This car has some serious get up and go! That is when it works right.

Weakness:

Where do I start! The day after I got it the thermostat went out...and that was a sign of things to come. Fist off about a month later the battey light kept comming on, and it finally just stayed on. Well come to find out the altenator wwas going out, and it finally went out. I had to get it towed. NEXT a month later the starter went out. I had to get it towed AGAIN. 6 weeks later the battery light came back on...guess what...the ALT. again! About 4 weeks later the starter went out AGAIN..this is 2 and 2! Then the stupid piece of s$*& started smoking...oil pan...had to have that replaced. Well now I am at today...3 weeks after getting the oil pan replaced...guess what....it is smoking again! That goodness I have a everything covered...but I would say that the SHO has a SERIOUS probelm...no wounder their resale value SUCKS BIG TIME. My advice...take out the motor and use it in something else. Ohh I forgot to mention this car rattles alot inside. The doors feel like crap, and everything feels like cheap plastic.

DO NOT GET ONE...unless someone gives it to you! I know of one other SHO that had the SAME problems mine had...and it was a diffrent year (94).

larger alloy wheels and the sport package offers excellent ride and handling. Interior is very nice as is exterior.. excellent pickup and acceleration

Weakness:

i think they overdid the elliptical theme.. guzzles gas 18miles per gallon is rather low.. I fill the gas tank and travel only 45miles and the needle is at 3/4th.. thats annoying.. casette deck is impossible to upgrade you are stuck with the elliptical profile.. if because of dust or smoke outside, you want to shut off vents.. yet keep the fan on.. you can only do this by putting it at max A/C... grr.. why should I put on the A/C when its cold outside? Honda cars dont make you switch on the a.c if you need just air to recirculate.. its an option

excellent value.. awesome ride and handling with the larger wheels and the duratech engine.. for its price, its a great deal..

nothing yet

MSRP for fully loaded SEL with every option was $25,199. I paid $21,500 for it plus 4.9% financing. I got every option on it. I liked the 24 valve 200 HP engine and the style of the car. I am 6'4" and I fit in very well. I commute 84 miles per day and the car is very comfortable. I am averaging 22.5 MPG on 2 tank fulls.

The only thing that upset me was the sales manager trying to sell me the extended waranty and the Red Carpet leasing. I talked him down from $1495 on the extended warranty to $895. I SAVED $4200 OFF MSRP! Always remember; most cars are marked up 15% on MSRP!!!

Strength:

The Taurus has an excellent ride quality. With the upgraded suspension, it takes in bumps smoothly and even corners quite well for a midsized car. The seats are comfortable and well supportive, and the controls, though some looking quite tacky, are in easy reach and easy to use. The gauges are goodsized and understandable, and the overall roominess is great.

Weakness:

The Taurus is my dad's car. It is equipped with the 3.0L Vulcan engine, and there's not too much good I can say about that. First, the car is very underpowered. It doens't even come close to matching the other competitors acceleration figures. Also, under hard acceleration, the engine has noticeable vibration and is quite loud for a supposedly "refined" V-6. Also, the axle ratio on this car is extremely low, at around 3.90:1. This means it revs really high and not that high of a speed. Also, in overdrive, it hits about 2300-2400 rpm while cruising at 65mph. Our van only does about 1900-2000 at this speed. Also mechanically, I'm not to impressed with the transmission on this car. When you accelerate real lazy, it shifts smooth out of first. When you give it about half-throttle, it shifts pretty rough. But then, when you floor it, it shifts smooth again. Figure that one out. Also, when it shifts from second to third at no matter what speed, it almost sounds like the engine hesitates before continuting on. Lastly, the design of this model year Taurus is pretty bad. It's way too "bubble-shaped" as my girlfriend says. The circular rear window somewhat hinders rear vision, and the bulge at the top of the doors make it kind of hard to use the side mirrors.

My dad bought this car used. He paid $16,000 Canadian for it. It was used, and had just over 28,000km on it. So the price was right. He needed a low mileage vehiclee because he's salesman and piles on the miles incredibly in this thing. After about 10 months of use, he's already put over 55,000 km on it. It's been okay so far, but I'm hoping he'll replace it really soon and getting something much better like a Buick Regal or something. I almost have him convinced on that car.

I personally wouldn't really recommend this car to anyone except older folks who don't drive too much. This definately isn't the greatest car Ford has ever built. It somewhat lacks in the quality department. Kind of ironic considering their slogan "Quality is Job 1". It's an okay car, but it's not on the top of my list.

Previous to this car, my dad had a 1994 Taurus. Compared to that, this new Taurus is much above. However, a guy I know owns a 1997 Pontiac Bonneville, and I would take that 10 to 1 over this car. That is one slick car. Not only is it extremely quick, it is quite, and incredibly smooth.

Strength:

Good engine. Always starts when I need it

Weakness:

Transmission problems are endless. Rattle sounds all in suspension system. Coolent systems is terrible. Ran 3/4 hot everytime I used it. Paint job was ok but chipped very easily. I'm getting a Buick LeSabre soon and oh what a nice car and what a relief from the Ford Taurus. Also, Ford dealers are terrible!!! They were going to charge me $1,300.00 to pass inspection when my step-dad looked at the problem and cost only $40.00 to pass inspection. Beware, Ford dealers are terrible and the biggest issue that they seem to never fix is that stupid transmission, which of course, is one of the most expensive parts on the car to have fixed!!!

Don't buy this car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Buick LeSabre, Mercury Sable, Honda Accord. Taurus never came close as for the reliability of the transmission.

Has been a very reliable car. Rides smooth (after getting rid of loud crapy general tires it came with) and quiet (no road noise).

Weakness:

Trim and details done poorly. Weather trim keeps needing pushed into place, loud air noise from passenger door, plastic trip not tight/poorly done.

Bought from the dealer in 1995 and my wife has driven except for when on vacation. Currently has over 60,000 miles. Mechanicaly it has been almost perfect, and has a very solid/stable persona. A comfortable car with an ok sterio. Had to replace the ac (6th year in phonix so ok i guess) hose around $300. Other than that perfect, not even a tune up. Very solid on the highway a pleasure to drive or ride in, except for the lack of detail/general cheepness that ford pays with the details, I would give it the highest rating.

Strength:

My 3.0 engine was fast enough to waste more than a few cars from stop lines. The seats I found to be very comfortable. Good gas mileage, 24/28 mpg.

Weakness:

Weak tranny that slips slightly in hot weather. Bad suspension in the front. Wheel bearing problems. The crappy thing was that after 2.5 years the "weaknesses" became problems.

I really loved my car. I can say few bad things about it, especially seeing as how I only paid 400 bucks for it. In the 2.5 years I owned it, the only thing that went wrong was my water pump (an easy at home fix), but in the past month my baby fell apart. My ball bearings, wheel bearings, and CV joints all went at the same time on the drivers side (a complex and time intensive. My word of warning is to check the suspension and drive axles thoroughly. Ford tranny's have never been strong, so expect that it may slip occasionally and such. The fact that mine had been "slipping" for 3 years, and still didn't go out doesn't surprise me at all (common w/ friends Taurus' as well). A week ago though after just replacing the entire wheel bearing housing, springs, cv joint, wheel bearings in BOTH sides we encountered a big problem. While making a 2 hr trip to Elkhart, IN we began hearing a strong vibration in the front drivers wheel. We pulled over to inspect it, but saw nothing weird, so continued driving. Suddenly the vibration became VERY intense and VERY scary. About 30 seconds later the front drivers side of my car dropped down! I looked to my left to see my wheel flying across the highway median at 65mph! At that sight, and after considering towing fees to get it back to Lansing, MI, we decided to leave my baby along the highway for impound. All in all I loved my car, and would buy it again in a heartbeat. She served her time well!
