Strength:

Size, seating for seven, smooth quiet ride.

Weakness:

Mechanical reliability.

This car stinks! Good size and ride but totally unreliable. Purchased it used with 22,000 miles on it and got an extended warranty at purchase. Good thing because I used it! Items replaced include steering column, steering box, complete wiring harness (air bag warning light would not go out), transmission speed sensor (2x), transmission (3x), left front wheel bearings, rear break calipers (seized, also bolts backed out after repair and caliper fell of on highway). Head gasket blew on spring vacation in Las Vegas. There is more, but I just can’t remember it all right now.

Strength:

Good pickup. Good gas mileage actual - 31 highway and 24 - 26 back and forth to work (84 mile round trip) Reasonably comfortable considering I spend 2 to 3 hours in it 5 days a week. Two cigarette lighter plugs.

Weakness:

No adjustable lumbar support. Console blocks ashtray. Trunk design is lacking. Rear seats fold down but the high opening prevents long objects from sliding in. Can't use after market radio due to AC controls being part of the face and it's football shape.

Pretty good car from my experience. Had 23K miles when I bought it, now has 73K. No major mechanical problems. Good gas mileage compared to the full sized Bronco it replaced. Minor problems were covered by warranty. I bought an extended 75K/5yr. one. Needed new radio, one new speaker, window motor and light switch all covered under warranty minus the $100.00 deductible.

Strength:

Good power on the 3.0 engine, controls are accessible, handles well

Weakness:

I have to question the transmission. When you go half throttle at 40mph, the car jerks. When you accelerate, it runs smooth. Also, when sitting at an idle, the car sputters like it is missing. Not sure what the problem is. My car has 56k on it and the jerking motion started at around 53k-54k. I chalked it up to the bad gas I was getting, but I am starting to wonder. I also have a problem with the heater/ac. Every now and then there will be a whistling type noise and then the smell of coolant fills the air. It clears up and I can't find any leaks when this happens. This occurs mostly when the heat is used. Anyone else experience this or know what this could be? Any info on the transmission?

Overall it is a good car and has performed well ( except the recent jerking and sputtering ). We have been on three trips and it has never let us down. The last trip made me nervous though. I don't know if it was my imagination, but it felt like the transmission may have started to slip. When I felt the slight motion with the cruise set, I couldn't see a decrease in rpm's. So I don't know. It seems to be ok now that I am home. If anyone has any info on 98 model ( problems that is ), please email me. ckrudy@earthlink.net

Strength:

Great car to get you from point A to point B. Strong handeling on turns. Body work has really held up over the years.

Weakness:

I have had a new engine and new transmission. Just had gears 2 and 3 replaced in the transmission and still does not shift right. Also it has always jumped when you press the accelerator after a turn.

I would recommend it to any one the wants to drive it on the highway or through small towns but not for the big city.

Strength:

totally reliable car! Really comfortable commuter car. I commute between 100 to 200 miles each day and I now have 131,000 miles on this car. the only thing I've had to replace is the alternator, battery, tires and the windshield wiper mechanism. Solid car, highest safety rating possible with my insurance company. Seats 6, hard to find a car that does that anymore.

Weakness:

can't think of a thing!Oh Yeah, there is one thing. has anyone else out there encountered a strange poping noise coming out from under the car when you turn? only happens intermittently. It has done it since I got the car. I have had it checked out several times and no one seems to be able to fix it or even tell me what it is. It hasn't caused me any problems though except wondering what it is.

I would recommend a 97 or older taurus to anyone and everyone. I bought it used (a program car) with 24,000 miles on it, for $15,000 ($5,000 trade-in on the cutlass) when I started college, hoping it would last until I graduated. I am starting my senior year this fall, I have 131,000 miles on it and no major problems yet.

owned a 1990 cutlass calais before this car. I like the style and comfort of the taurus better although they were both great cars.

Strength:

The overall appearance of this car is very nice. Sporty, yet classy looking. It has a lot of get up and go (V6) and rides quite well down the road. Certainly a good car for long highway rides!

Everything inside the car is well positioned for easy access and handling! Well put together.

Weakness:

Visibility could be better, but it's not too bad as is. (wouldn't let it stop me from buying this car)

What you get for the price of this car is superb. I highly recommend
the Taurus to anyone who is shopping for a nice, reliable, great looking car.

I paid about $18K for a pretty loaded, sweet car.

Weakness:

No cup holders
Some slight vibrations above 55 mph

This is my first car or else I would have something sporty :) This car was chosen by my parents and given to me. After reading some of the other reviews i'm scared to death as to what could happen to me. But i've had the car for about 1.5 years now and I haven't experienced any of the problems that are stated here. The engine has 96,000 miles on it and the only things that have been replaced were the motor mounts, (ford recall) Alternator and the water pump. Other than that this car has been a real trooper. Acceleration with the 3 Liter V6 is a lot better than you would expect with a car this size. Really flies in 3rd gear. Gas mileage seems average. Anybody reading these reviews has probably already decided that the Ford Taurus isn't the car for them - but i'll go out on a limb and say that it has been an overall good car for me. Its always started when I needed it most and has never broke down on me as severe as some of these other people.

I personally haven't owned any other vehicles as I said this is my first. However my mom has a 1997 Jeep Cherokee Country, my dad a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherrokee 5.9 Limited and my brother a 98 Chevy S-10 Extreme. They are all fun to drive and I would say get an SUV over a car anyday :)

Well, where should i start. Built very tough and durible. JBL stereo too loud. Leather is flawless after 10 years. Engine runs extremely strong,Yamaha made it like a Ferrari. Even in 5th gear going 30 MPH, doesnt lag at all. Very smooth ride, car drives it self. Love the stick. Everything works. Looks very sporty.

Weakness:

When you put the gas to the floor it it has a very annoying habit of going back in time.

For the money i've paid, i got much more. Better then a BMW. Faster, better looking, better handling for much less. Has everything i could want in a car. LOVE IT.

Strength:

strong car, roomy, huge trunk(big enough for 2 amps and 4 12" subwoofers), safe, 13 years old and it still runs.

Weakness:

tranny slips, air conditioner has never worked, it's an UGLY car, NO CUP HOLDERS, breaks are too soft, power stearing, stearing wheel squeaks, a loud noise coming from the engine, no tachometer, driver side door leaked, trunk leaked, can't find rims for it, paint chipping and peeling...i could go on

honestly I hate this car, only reason I got it is to see how many modifications I could make. I'm getting it painted this week and i've put a pretty mean sound system in and done some interior work but as far as rims, air suspension, ground effects, lowering kits, tail lights...i can't do anything else(because I can't find it for this car).

this car is the defenition of an american car, if you have money and like american cars, you will like the taurus, but if you are on a budget and hate american car's(or ford), you'd have more fun with a mountian bike.

I really can't complain about this car i haven't had any real problems except for my steering going out, I could barely turn right and couldn't turn left at all, luckily the was a repair shop a block away so I wasn't standed anywhere. but a week later, after I spent 100 buck fixing it, it did again, the 2nd time was free.

since I'm only 17 and work at burger king and have to pay for everything I need and want, I really can't afford anything more so it has been a great first car so when I get a real car, I'll appreciate the taurus a little more.

Strength:

I enjoy the sleek design and silver frost color. The oval dash design and flip up console are especially nice. I like the fact that there is a lot of head room and leg room. The car now has 144,000 miles on it because I am an outside sales rep and the engine is holding up well.

Weakness:

We had the freeze plugs fall out & leave us stranded in Gaffney, SC in 1998...then found out that Ford recalled the car for that very reason. Since then we have gone through 3 heater cores. Now we are having to replace the transmission, but I guess at 144,000 miles that's not too bad. I agree with other reviews that the gas mileage is poor. I feel as if I am always filling up.

I recommend this car if you need a less expensive roomier vehicle. It is obvious that Ford has some kinks that need to be worked out. However, I strongly recommend that you follow the suggested maintenance routine to the letter. I strongly believe that is what has kept our Taurus in good overall running condition.

Similar Products Used:

I typically drive a car until it just won't go anymore. Most of my previous vehicles were more compact than the Taurus. I guess overall it has been a good automobile, although it was very frustrating going through the heater core fiasco.
