NOTHING.. I LOVE THIS CAR! MUST BUY, alot more better of a deal over Camry and Accord! You get more for your money in a complete created Taurus! Similar Products Used: I traded my 1999 Accord for the Taurus, just cause I fell in love with the show room model( the one I bought). I was on my way to buy a 2001 Accord when I stoped and saw the Taurus, iam glad I did...It awesome! |

Strength:
Great handling, great gas mileage ( sounds hard to belive, but that 3.0 gave us 30 mpg, a few times). rides great, and has excellent pickup.
Weakness:
I cant really say anything bad about this car. It has been a real dependable vehicle. I purchased this car after I was involved in a auto accident with my 1988 ford escort in September of 1999. The escort was totaled in the accident and was paid the value of the car by the other party's insurance company. I took that settlement and added to it and purchased my second auto from Allen Saunders auto in Elizabeth City, NC. (I bought the escort from him also) I purchased a Taurus from him and it was a great purchase after having my mechanic check it out and gave it high marks saying that it had been taken care of. I just keep the oil changed at every 3000 miles faithfully and change the transmission filter every 10,000 miles (according to ford specs) Similar Products Used: This is the first family sedan that I have owned. Other vehicles have been sports cars. Comparing it to other vehicles that I have owned, I would say that it is a family car with a sports car attitude. |

Strength:
Very roomy interior, especially leg room.
Weakness:
Endless expensive repairs; accelerates like a groundhog running uphill with a cinder block chained to its back (I expected more from a 3.0, 6 cyl.) Have you ever blown your transmission (for the second time before hitting 90,000 miles) on New Jersey's Garden State Parkway, where tow trucks are NOT ALLOWED, 70 miles from your house, on a holiday weekend? I have. I've also had collapsed motor mounts (thankfully under recall), dozens of oil leaks, replaced various water pumps, cv boots, ABS sensors, etc., all in the 2 years I owned the Taurus. The three other cars I own or have owned, all GM, have not cost me combined in 13 years what the Taurus cost me in two for repairs. I thought $3900 was a steal for a car with only 78000 miles. Wrong. Handled well, smooth and quiet ride
Weakness:
Engine performance.Constantly had to fix something. I bought the car in 1996 at a very good price with only 68000 miles on it.It was loaded with almost every available option.I was the second owner.Previous owner said she had no major problems and showed me all of the service records. She took very good care of the car.I had the car 6 months when the first problem appeared and then for the next four years almost everything that could go wrong, went wrong. The transmission and the alternator were the only things that did not need to be fixed, although the tranny slipped this past year.I got rid of the car in april,2001 with 128,000 miles on it.The last year I had it was trouble free, but alot was fixed by then.First thing to go was the air conditioning. Then front brakes, rotors, and wheel bearings.Rear brakes were not far behind.Water pump and then power steering pump.Power steering fluid got on exhaust manifold and caused a fire when the line burst.Could have been a major catastrophe but I put it out quickly. The rubber gaskets rotted out in the trunk so it leaked badly.Paint job peeled off or faded badly over entire car.CV joints and axle replaced both sides.Engine had a weird surge at idle but no one could find out what caused it.Other normal wear items such as thermostat, plugs, wires, bushings, etc. Then at 110,000 miles the infamous head gaskets blew. The handling and the ride was good, but the 3.8L engine was very sluggish for an engine of that size.I had a 88 cutlass supreme with a 2.7L engine that had significantly better acceleration.Interior was roomy and didn't fall apart, except the dash cracked.Overall I wasn't to unhappy with the vehicle. Most of the things I had to have fixed were normal repair items, but I didn't expect to have to fix some of them before 100,000 miles.Fortunately I know a competent private mechanic who fixed them at half the price a local dealer would have charged me.Gas mileage was 17/20 which wasn't too good ,but not many other vehicles in its class got much better. Similar Products Used: Olds Cutlass and Chevy Corsair. They had better perfomance but were not much more dependable. |
