Plenty of room, good handling car, lots of trunk room.
Weakness:
Major, major engine problems....local dealer no help at all. I bought my Taurus in August 1996 from Mike Murphy Ford in Morton. I also purchased the extended warranty-7 years or 70,000 miles. I would have to say that my biggest problem was with the Murphy's service department. After the first month, the door ajar light stayed on. It took 4 different service appointments before they could get that cleared up, which then also resulted in my door panel pins breaking, which I was also charged for. Then the overheating started. I took it in for service and they pressure tested it. It turned out to be a blown head gasket. They weren't able to get me in for another week, but told me it was ok to drive until then. Two days after that, I turned on my air conditioner (it was in May) and I had no air conditioning. I scheduled an appointment, and was told they had not done anything to cause the problem, that the line had tons of tiny holes in it. Thank heavens for the extended warranty, but I had already paid my $50 per service call one too many times. I got the head gasket replaced, paying my $50 minimum and two months later I got my recall notice. Would Mike Murphy refund my $50??? No sir. I continued to have my regularly schedule services done there, as it was local. My warranty ran out several months ago, and the car starts overheating up again. Back to the service department only to find out that now I have a cracked head and Ford will not take into consideration I am only 2,000 miles out of warranty. Fed up with Ford, I took the car to a reputable local mechanice who replaced the head. Big bucks, but I was not going to put up with the crap from Murphy Ford. Now, 2 months later, I still smell antifreeze. I took it back to the local mechanic and the timing cover gasket is blown....estimated cost $450-$550.....I just got over paying for the head gasket....What a rip. Just looked up on the web to see how many other are having the same problems....sounds like just about everyone who has the 3.8L engine.... Similar Products Used: None |

Strength:
Duratec engine, build quality, low maintenance, sleek profile, much improved looks over 1996-1999
Weakness:
Tranny upshifts could be a little more pronounced, but i am 19, and I know most people like a smooth trans, with the taurus definately has. I have driven my taurus for more than a year now, and am continuing to like it more every day. I have had only very minor problems. I had to take in only once for engine light, and was fixed with minor sensor. I will suggest to find a reputable service dealership, because tauri (tauruses?) can be difficult to work on. This is due to the complexity of the duratec engine. And what an engine it is!! Great off the line power, with excellent highway manners. It is surprisingly easy to hit the 112mph limiter. I have put custom wheels and tinted the windows, and since mine is black it really helps the a/c work better. I paid $20,000 for fully loaded taurus, minus leather seats. You just cant find a better car for that money. Sure you can get an accord or camry, but not a v6. Similar Products Used: 2001 Buick Regal- sister's car. Nice looking, but overboosted steering, and 3800v6 not as smooth as duratec. |

Strength:
Optional Duratec engine (very powerful). Reliable (so far). Nice sounding factory stereo
Weakness:
Horrible depreciation. Terrible styling. Seats need lumbar support. Rear seat headroom subpar. I bought this 98 Taurus in 1999. It was used with 20,000 miles on it. It has the optional duratec 200 hp V6 engine. During the test drive I was immediately sold on the engine. I was very impressed with its acceleration. The engine seemed to have average power when driving in town, but when I got the car out on the interstate and punched it.....it really came to life. Similar Products Used: None |

engine sensors, transmission This car was a fleet car. I bought it in 1999 with 70,000 mi. My dad was the previous driver so I knew it was well cared for. Worked well for the last 2 year. I do have that weird popping sound when cornering, like others have reported. Also had the door ajar problem, fixed it with lots of WD40 in all the door latches. I had the O2 sensor and some other sensor go out on a trip, $700 to fix. Bad plugs and wires, replaced 2 times. My service engine light is always on. I would get it checked out and it would be nothing. At $40 a pop to turn it off, I started leaving it on. So then I don't know when there is really a problem. Like just a couple of weeks ago, on another trip, my transmission went out, $2000! Also, other little problems with radio and ticking in engine. My husband has a 1989 Honda Prelude with 170,000 mi and has only had to have the clutch replaced and the usually brakes and exhaust repaired. Great car, more relieable than my taurus. I will probably go with a Honda or a Toyota next time. Never have found a GOOD ford dealer (this is in 4 different states with 2 cars). Similar Products Used: Husband's '89 Prelude-rocks! |

Strength:
Good exterior condition.
Weakness:
Seems like every time we turn around we have to get something else fixed. We purchased this car when minivans were very popular. I really wanted a car that was comfortable to ride in for vacation trips. We also wanted a vehicle that we could load-up for college campus trips for our two college bound kids. It has been great for that ! The car is loaded...all the perks. Similar Products Used: We own a 89 Chevy Corsica with 120 K miles on it. It's been beaten to death by both of our teens. This car is more reliable than the Ford ! |

The engine is the best thing about the car . It picks up and doesnt stop at any speed. Sound system is good and exhaust sounds good also.It has 220 hp and 210 lbs of torque and does 0-60 in the low 7's.
Weakness:
Parts are expensive. Transmission could be better especially second gear.Hard to find modifications for this car. The car is very quick no doubt about it but, parts are very expensive and it seems many problems seem to occur. I have had a new transmission put it and new valve covers and all the belts. The cars exterior is excellent no sign of rust anywhere. Very fun car to drive and will make people cry when they just got beat by a family sedan. Similar Products Used: Cant keep up with the v-8 sports cars off the line. Gets about the same fuel economy as these cars also.Fastest v-6 car in its class. |

engine, reliability, low upkeep...and now that i think about it, i love having my wagon
Weakness:
shaking on highway never can get rid of it...but its only at high speeds, so it isnt really a prob...who needs faster than 70-75?? I recieved this gar after getting my license about three years ago. Previously, it belonged to my mother, who owned it since mile 0 and never had a problem with it (I took the car over at 115000 miles). As a young teenager, I was a little whiny about getting a station wagon, when my friends were taking over their parents grand cherokees and towncars... I never knew how much I would appreciate my Taurus. Soon enough, their cars began to give up...my friends Grand Cherokee was a stubborn beast and was always busted while my Taurus just kept on going. She got her first tune up to the tune of300 dollars at 120000 miles (not bad for the first). She has always been proffesionally maintained, as I will continue to do because i cant tell a screwdriver from a lego... Oil changed always between 3-4000 miles. Can't find any... This is easily one of the best cars I have ever owned! Its going on 120,000 miles and it still runs brand new! I never had any real problems with this car other than its regular oil changes and filters. I would deffinitely recomend this car to anyone! Similar Products Used: Chevrolet Lumina.
