Ford Thunderbird (2002 - 2005) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

After being on hiatus for several years, Ford introduced a new Thunderbird for 2002. Returning to the original formula for the Thunderbird, the latest version had a two-seat coupe/convertible layout like the first-generation Thunderbird and retrofuturistic styling to match.

Model Reviewed: Thunderbird LX 3.8 6cylinder

Strength:

-the interior is comforable
-the stereo sounds good
-the body looks nice and sporty

Weakness:

-the engine has some imperfections, to many things can go wrong
-car shakes when I hit about 70mph
-when I turn on the air conditioning it takes a lot of power away from the engine
-head gasgets blew at about 96000 miles

This car has been nothing but a headache in the last year. I had to repace ball joints, brakes, and head gasgets. (By the way, the people at the local ford dealership could not give me a good reason on why my head gasgets blew at 96000 miles) I still have a few more things that need to be fixed but I have run out of money! This car may seem like a good idea because they look good and you can usually get them at a good price. However, you will end up paying a lot for it in the end. It's just not worth it.

Model Reviewed: Thunderbird LX Sport

Strength:

Smooth running rear wheel drive V8. Four wheel independent suspension. Enough interior room for 4 adults. The styling of this design is still nice looking today.

Weakness:

Intake manifold prone to failure and will be replaced under the Ford program 97M91. Not alot of low end torque from the 281 cid engine.

I bought this car in early 1999. The car rides and handles very well. On a recent family trip to Florida, the car averaged just over 26 mpg on the highway. While the car does not accelerate hard like some of the sport coupes, getting up to cruising speed is no problem.

Strength:

- Styling
- Comfort
- Independant Rear Suspension
- Room for 5 comfortably
- Dependable

Weakness:

- 3.8L (while it has NEVER let me down, it could be a little stronger)
- Front brake disc wrapping
- Cassettee began eating tapes in about 1995

I have had this T-bird since 1992. I has the V-6 (232cid) and to date I have had only one problem with it and that was the A/C. The car now has 101,375 on the odometer without as much as a hiccup. The only thing I really did not like was the interior. I took care of that by installing a 1996 interior in the car. Overall, I love my Thunderbirds. (My wife drives a 1996 LX)

I have owned Camero's (fast and cheap to fix) Mustangs (too small for a family) and Cuda's (faster than the Camero) and overall the Thunderbird has it over all these in styling, ride, and comfort. I have two T-birds and will be picking up my third this weeked. The 1991 v-6 and my wife's 1996 V-8 will now not have to worry about MODS as I am taking delivery of a 1989 Thunderbird Super Coupe. Some people might call me a gluton for punishment but with my experience with these cars I have no problem having three Thunderbirds.

Strength:

Decent gas mileage, cheaper insurance, decent power, great styling, good looking wheels, big trunk

Weakness:

could use more power, less problems with head gaskets, small number of performance parts available

I have always been a Ford fan and will always be a fan of Thunderbirds. Ever since I was a young boy I dreamed of having a T-bird. I wish they would have never cut production. My 93 is the first car I've owned. What sucks is the lack of performance upgrades for these cars. I wish that I would have bought one with 5.0 instead of the 3.8. My car has been quite reliable for the past 2 years. Somethings have gone bad (starter, radiator, water pump, sway bar), but that's it. I would recommend a T-bird to anyone.

I love this car so much. It is very fast and i happened to find a sport. I get better gas mileage than my friends explorer with a 4.0 in it. I give this car the highest ratings.

Model Reviewed: thunderbird t-coupe

Strength:

the best i would have to say the fast outta the hole power it has with the 5 speed trans and the rear gear ratio in the rear end ,oh and lets not forget the lincon luxeries it has throughout the entire car!

Weakness:

the simple fact that the oil seal on the back of the head , and the simple fact that a new turbo runs ya about $800 for a used one and about 2.000-2.400 for a new one /because they can't be rebuilt

this is the one car i've enjoyed owning ,but it's had it's problems as do other cars .it's been a wonderful family car my family and i have had alot of good times in this 88 t-bird t-coupe and and would like to see ford come back out with another one just like it with newer fuond technology such as cobra powered mustang those are really sweet machines ! ps haveing trouble finding the reason it bowgs down coming outta 1st gear and stays at a stahl and wants to die ! so if someone can help me figure it out that would be great thanks ! steve
