Honda Civic (2010 and older) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The Civic is Honda’s compact car that is offered in sedan and coupe versions. First introduced as a small, inexpensive hatchback in 1972, the Civic has increased in size during its lifetime while continuing to offer excellent fuel economy. The entire Civic line was all-new for 2006.

The basic Civic is available as a sedan and coupe and comes in several trims: DX, DX-VP, LX-S, EX and EX-L. The Civic SI, the performance-oriented trim, offers 57 more horsepower than the base model, a few more performance options and a starting price of around $7,000 more than the base Civic.

The Civic also comes in two eco-friendly options: the Honda Civic Hybrid, which is reviewed separately, and the GX, a hybrid alternative that runs on Compressed Natural Gas. Unfortunately the GX is only sold in California (and other states that have accepted California's Zero-Emission Vehicle regulations). It costs about $10,000 more than a base Civic.

Strength:

Reliability. This car has never let us down.

Weakness:

Body hardware. Could be a little more powerful.

Recommend highly. We bought the Civic at a hail damage sale in 1994. In almost seven years and 134,000 miles this car has had two sets of brake pads, a new exhaust system, two sets of tires, and a new pair of c/v boots. It has never been in the shop except for the aforementioned items (I replaced the brake pads myself in about 30 minutes), and routine oil and filter changes. My daughter still drives it and has not had a bit of trouble with it.

Model Reviewed: Honda SiR

Strength:

Just that it's popluar in my country. Fashion statement. It's the trend, anyone who's someone here MUST drive a Honda. The SiR in my country is classified as a sport sedan. Well, that's about it....

Weakness:

Cheap plastics used. No defoggers on some models. For a car that's categorized as a "sport sedan" it sure doesn't feel like one! It cracks out only 160hp at nearly 7000 rpm. That's nearly hitting the red line. I tried blooring the pedal a lot of times(to attain 160hp) and I could smell the nauseaous fumes coming from the clutch and from the oil in the engine. It also nearly ruined my engine. The SiR was just meant to be a sedan, excluding the term "sport". Parts are rarely available and when they are, they cost too much. The car itself is expensive considering that it's just a sedan. Expensive considering that it only had and additional 30 horsepower, I'd rather buy a turbo unit.. much cheaper all in all. No sunroof. No 3 door models available here.

I vacationed in the US some months ago and I saw a lot of souped up Civics' but I later learned that some of them almost nearly cost 50 thou. for their upgrades. WoW, too expensive.... get a Supra or a BMW M3 instead! If you want a sports car don't waste your time or money on upgrades in this car and just buy yourself a Mustang, 3000GT, Audi S4, Supra or any other sports car to save you the trouble and money. In Japanese vehicles, the Toyota can always beat Honda! When you buy a Honda here you pay more but you get less. But hey, in my country there are only 3 "sport sedans" sold here.... the Civic SiR, Mitsubishi GSR and the Hyundai Tiburon... all lack power!!!! People here in my country rave about the SiR because it's the only few sport sedans here, no competition. Wish the Celica 2000 was here!

Toyota Celica GT-S - beats the Civic in everything! Looks, WoW! Power, ergonomics, agility, ammenities and overall value.
Toyota Corolla - great overall reliability although not as powerful and not as big as the Sir's twin cam 1.9 engine. Cheaper too!
Mitsubishi Eclipse GTS - much more powerful but a lot heavier but still better than the SiR.

Model Reviewed: Civic SI

Strength:

The Honda Civic Si is my first car but what a first car to have. The handleing is great and the power is even better. The DOHC VTEC engine is great above 5600 RPM. The interior come stock with c CD player and a sunroof. Overall I love this car and plan to drive it till it stops driving.

Weakness:

There are however a few drawbacks to this car. The stock tires are very poor, the make noise even under madoerate cornerning. The other major brawback is the difficulty you can find in accessing the power. Since most of the power is on the second cam you almost always have to downshift to get neccessary power.

I would recomend this car to anyone who can get their hands on it. It being a honda is very reliable and its the best buy for the buck. To those who are debating whether or not to shell out the extra 3 grand for the SI do it. The differeces are astronomical. Overall great buy.

Compared to other cars that I have driven this has to be one of the best. It isway more fun to drive than the VW Golf 1.8T GTI which is its closest competator.

Strength:

Style, the VTEC engine is a racing prodigy, 100hp per litre, the transmission is wow!, handling is fantastic. This is my first car and I can't say how many people I've beaten with it..stock. The engine gives good power about 5500 and great milage below 4000rpm.

Weakness:

Squeaks in the trunk. That's it.

This car is the definition of bang for the buck. It is also the best sleeper on the streets. If the guy you line up against doesn't notice the "DOHC VTEC" sticker, well, they're in for a surprise. To sum it up...it is a 'nice little Honda' on the outside and a real sports car on the inside. Definitly a wolf in sheeps clothing.

Strength:

I like how reliable this car has been to me, never had a problem with it yet (knock on wood). Hondas also hold their values better than a lot of other more expensive cars out there.

Weakness:

It needs more power, my car has 106 horsepower which isn't a whole lot, it's a rather slow car. If you want a fast car don't pick this one.

I paid $11,000 total for this car and i would definetely recommend it to anybody else.

Strength:

Amazing sporty look, can be easily modified at any given time, a very reliable engine (DOHC VTEC)... the best engine i believe honda has ever made. very fast and quick, and once again the look is very eye catching and can easily be modified at any time. The best looking car in it's market. Dump it and it looks amazing.

Weakness:

cheap metal body, not enough torque, and that's about all that is bad with this car. everyting else is topnotch

well, the civic SIR is a very fun, fast and reliable car. The engine pumps out 160hp with 111 lbsft Torque@7000 rpm. This engine is amazing and will last a lifetime. The interior is well designed with plenty of backseat room not found in other similar cars that comepete with it. The SIR comes with a power moonroof, cd player, air conditioning, pw doors, locks and mirrors. For the price of $26000 (canadian) you can't go wrong.

you can beat the hell out of the car each and every day and this car will never give you a problem.

Strength:

Handles nice, Lively engine (manual only), body styling ages well since its not too dramatic, unlike other 88 models which looks old today. Good quality of the plastics which won't crack in the sun and good fit of the parts. Oh almost forgot reliability. this car feels like it'll never die

Weakness:

The body tends to rust especially around the fenderwells, rocker panels
i've done the bodywork myself on it and even after gettin it oil treated it would come out again. Also the seats material is of anemic thickness.

Bought the car 2 years ago, did the bodywork myself (had lots of rust)
paid 1500$ canadian. My neighbor wants to buy it for 2k. And i've been havin it for 2 years! Im an amateur mechanic so since i tought the DX was too slow, i bought an CRX Si engine and put it in. The DX engine had 226 000 kms and still ran fine, never had a problem, the CRX engine had 200 000 on it, now has 270 000 and the only problem i had was the alternator which died soon after the swap. the car now has like 300 000kms on it and still im not afraid of takin trips to Vermont once in a while. It really feels like its never gonna die. Good gas mileage too (8L/100 km). not as fun to drive as the Golf but much less expensive to keep on the road. Id recommended it without a doubt but check carefully for the rust. theres a lot of camouflage out there.

AWESOME SHIFTER(VERY ACCURATE). Good Seats, Good paint Excellent reliability, good Honda Service, Everything is top-notch! VTEC is cool!

Weakness:

Nothing...though people ove 6'3 may be a little cramped.

I paid $14600 for mine used, It had every available option, the color is Nighthawk Black and it is awesome. The shifter is very fun to use, makes shifting like second nature. This car will take on Cavaliers and Sunfires with ease, and tears Escorts up, but stay away from the mustangs and camaro's. They fly by you. There are tons of aftermarket parts and you can do anything to them you could think of. I wish the powerband was a little more usuable around town, uses more gas when your cruisng at 5000 RPM's to keep the power right at you foot. VTEC makes it run quickly starting at 5500 RPM's, then you can feel the pull but not as much as on the B-series Honda Engines. All in all, I would recommend this car to the commuter and enthusiast alike becaue it has a very docile side and a hard revvin side that loves to go fast!...sort of

Strength:

Very dependable, smooth ride, decent gas mileage. I am always impressed every winter on how it handles it the winter weather. While others are driving SUVs, I have no problem getting around in my Civic. Comfortable ride. Good body style. With a nice set of custom wheels and tint it is a great looking car! Holds their value.

Weakness:

Needs more power. I would recommend the EX model. It has all the same options as the LX, but it has a quicker VTEC engine. Engine is sometimes noisy (especially in higher altitudes in the mountains). AC went out at 55000 miles. Blinker switch broke at 65000. Some parts can be expensive. Hard to find a good mechanic (who knows something about Hondas)in smaller towns.

I paid about $12,500 for it used in 1997. I think that the only reason the AC unit went out is because the car was driven for three years in Phoenix. That is hard on any car's AC. I would highly recommend this vehicle to anyone. It is reliable and it is a great looking car. It is important however, to change the timing belt in a Honda before 100,000 miles. I have about 75,000 on mine and the timing belt has been changed. If you do that, it should run forever.

Strength:

very reliable even during the most brutal winter seasons with a lot of snow on top of it. This car will never die...and I drive like a typical New Yorker over really bad pot holes.

Weakness:

Car Thieves love to stalk this car. Watch Out!
High insurance premiums, acceleration isn't that good, body rusts along the door hinges...body has many dings, scratches and bumps due to its thin metal.

If you live in a low risk city for crime, I highly recommend it! For the city folks, think twice about it because the insurance premiums will cost you a fortune due to latest FBI crime stats on the top-10 at-risk cars.
