Honda Civic (2010 and older) Midsize | Compact

Honda Civic (2010 and older) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The Civic is Honda’s compact car that is offered in sedan and coupe versions. First introduced as a small, inexpensive hatchback in 1972, the Civic has increased in size during its lifetime while continuing to offer excellent fuel economy. The entire Civic line was all-new for 2006.

The basic Civic is available as a sedan and coupe and comes in several trims: DX, DX-VP, LX-S, EX and EX-L. The Civic SI, the performance-oriented trim, offers 57 more horsepower than the base model, a few more performance options and a starting price of around $7,000 more than the base Civic.

The Civic also comes in two eco-friendly options: the Honda Civic Hybrid, which is reviewed separately, and the GX, a hybrid alternative that runs on Compressed Natural Gas. Unfortunately the GX is only sold in California (and other states that have accepted California's Zero-Emission Vehicle regulations). It costs about $10,000 more than a base Civic.

Strength:

my civic sedan looks stylish, is fun to drive, gets good gas mileage. the civic is set up for alot of accessories which i installed myself (cargo net, leather steering wheel cover, keyless entry).

Weakness:

a little weak when entering the freeway. could have at least included a stereo cassette with the car.

i paid $14,200 (w/o tax and license). i could have waited for the new 2001 civics but my old car (1986 nissan sentra) died on me. plus i like the appearance of the 2000 over the 2001. highly recommended! it is a great car. i would have liked to buy an accord but it didn't fit my budget.

toyota corolla, nissan sentra. the civic compares very favorably.

Model Reviewed: Civic Coupe SI (EX in the US)

Strength:

This is an amazing car. It handles exceptionally well. Very good acceleration for a Four-banger with an automatic (VTEC SOHC engine). Build quality is second to none. I don't know why everyone complains about the stereo, I find it to be excellent. The CD player never skips. The radio reception is excellent. Braking is great. I love the styling (I think it is similar to the BMW 323 ci coupe - I still think the Civic's styling is better - much more agressive).

Treat this car with respect and it will last you a good 10-12 years. My 1990 VW Jetta barely lasted five years (and I pampered the thing). My advice never buy VW, opt for Honda.

Weakness:

Interior is a little bland but very functional. Sunroof button should be located by the overhead map light. A little pricey but well worth the premium.

If you are looking for a good car that will get you from point A to B with some zest, buy the HONDA Civic SI (EX). I personally like the 2000 design better than the 2001 Coupe. I rather have a car with a double-wishbone suspension (front and rear) than a combo of McPherson Struts/Wishbone on the new 2001 design. Engine improvements are so marginal - that there is no difference in real-world driving. At the end of the day, you be the judge.

Similar Products Used:

1990 VW Jetta (One of the worst cars in the history of the automobile - probably would have had better luck with a LADA or Yugo); 1999 VW Jetta GLS (My Civic smokes this car in terms of ride and handling); 1992 Acura Integra GS (Very similar in ride - and that's a good thing).

Strength:

-FUN 2 DRIVE!
-High revving engine.
-Nimble handling
-Very well equipped.
-I paid $16639!

Weakness:

-Weak low end power.
-Six speed tranny would be nice.

First of all, anybody with delusions of beating a V8 Mustang in a stoplight race needs to check themself into a mental hospital.

Second, people who deface the beautiful lines of this car by adding gaudy bodywork should be arrested.

This car is fun to drive; if you are skilled with a clutch and stick, you will love this car. Anyone who has ridden a high-revving motorcycle will have no problems driving this car. The high-revving engine is a blast. I turn down my radio just to hear the engine sing past 5000 rpm.

I got mine in Electron Blue, exclusive to the Si. I opted for this color to set it apart from the 98 trillion other Civics on the road; look around during your morning commute and you will see at least 3 Civics at any given time and place.

Terrific engine, 160bhp, upgraded suspension components, 55-series V-rated tires,4 wheel disc brakes, cool Electron Blue paint, moonroof, power everything, CD w/ 6 speakers, keyless entry... all for $16.6K

Beat that!

1991 Acura Integra LS: is a good car but not as fast, nimble, or well-equipped as the 2000 Civic Si; a testament to how far build quality and consumer expectations have progressed in 10 years. 1997 Honda Civic EX auto: not as quick, less controlled suspension, not as fun with the auto.

Strength:

First and foremost the car is very fun. Very reliable. Smooth ride, good handling, no replacements or extra servicing needed. No need to mention gas mileage. I swear it has more than 106 hp.

Weakness:

Noisy freeway driving, makes me have to turn radio way up. Not good in that aspect. Fairly cramped interior, but I suppose thats my fault for buying a Civic when I'm 6'3". Honda overall is a little pricey, but at the same time good quality.

Overall, it is a quick, reliable and enjoyable car to own.

What don't I like about it is a better question. Best handling, accelerating, feeling car on the market for the price. Absolutely no problems, and none do I expect.

Weakness:

I think that I got taken on the price a little bit...I bought it with 4,000 miles on it and would have liked to get it a little cheaper...but I'm not complaining altogether too loudly. I also made the mistake of buying a seven year warranty on the thing...it dawned on me when I got home that I probably won't have any warranty claims in seven years on this car.

At 16,900, it is the best car in the world for the money.

Strength:

It's cute, fairly roomy for short hauls, very reliable, and has a good ride for a small car. Good gas mileage, even for an automatic (29 mpg mostly city driving) Once I fixed a glove box that came off in my hands, very few complaints.

Weakness:

Low torque and power (you really have to rev it to get onto an urban on-ramp, which alarms your passengers). Can be dented by a bad thought. Bumpers likewise mar easily. Rather slow, high-effort steering at low speeds. Tape deck overheats easily no matter how many times you clean it. Brakes are a tiny bit weak, but don't fade and wear well. Oh, and the cupholders are too close to the dashboard and a bit too small.
Poor dealership customer service (at least in California). They need a wake-up call to basic service and also stop the "my way or the highway" school of compromise deals.

I would recommmend it to anyone. I may have overpaid for my Civic (I had the flu and the damn dealers tag-teamed me into submission) but if anything it's been worth it. If you can avoid sticker shock when buying and getting it fixed, you'll have a car that will last a long, long time. If you are looking for something to get you around town with minimum fuss, the Civic lives up to its name.

Similar Products Used:

1982 Honda Accord- I miss that car... don't get me started. Steering, power and brakes all superior for the most part, although mileage wasn't in the same class. Civic also has the fold-down rear seat, which is very handy.
1988 Toyota Camry- I can compare the Civic favorably for brake reliability, steering effort (the Camry's steering is bog-slow at low speeds) and fuel efficiency (particularly on the highway). Camry gets marks for driver comfort, but that's not too surprising given its size. I don't like the Camry's terrible driver's seat adjustment system (but that's another story).

Strength:

This is an excellent automobile! Very good gas milage - at times over 40 miles per gallon!!! Have driven across country several times with out any problems. Never left me stranded - even in 115 degree Las Vegas summer heat! I did recently have to replace the starter but was not a big deal to keep my rollar skate on the road.

Weakness:

I really got taken on the price. I bought the car used, in '97, with 14,000 miles on it and paid at least the new car price. I also got the base model which I don't think should cost $15,000 NEW much less used. I went to the dealership "just to look", got starry eyed and let myself get talked into a lousy deal on a nice car. Admittedly, I am somewhat to blame. Also, I wish I had power steering. It's very difficult to back out of a tight parking space while turning. The door lock on the driver side has broken twice. Scratches and dents easily.

Wish I hadn't paid as much as i did but otherwise it's a great car. I'm a Honda Snob, a true believer. I want a car that never breaks down and will drive to the moon and back. Honda is the car for me! Just one more thing... always change your oil and TIMING BELT when you're supposed too and you're Honda will go forever.

i paid almost $18,000 for mine, but then a spent a few extra thousand with mods. I now have my hp around 350hp. 0-60 in just under 5 sec. I love this car, its quick, and looks cool. If you are looking at a honda, for sure look at the Si. It will last a long time so i hear too, and it is a great first car, atleast it is for me.

Strength:

Great gas milage 40 average and as high as 48 on good highway run.
Great quality and looks. It has 98000 miles with only scheduled maintenance. Mine is considerably quiet for a small car. The best commuter car I have ever owned (I average 30000+ miles a year and I have two other cars to put miles on also). It can be put through the paces - 5 speed is a must. It is nice that it came with good looking wheels.

Weakness:

No curise control. Should have come in a few more colors besides silver, black and red. I would have liked a nice dark metalic blue. Some small rattles that are hard to find. Didn't like the Firestone tires. I replaced them with Toyo Ultra 800 Touring tires - more quiet and better handling.

I chose silver and it was 16800 out the door, tax, lic. etc included, I believe it to be a very good value - AC, tape player, floor mats, and mud gards were the only options I added. Later I replaced the rear "black" license housing to one the same color as the car (like the EX). Mine too was first mistaken a few times for a Bimmer. Anyone who whats a great low maintenance, high gas milage comuter car that turns the heads, this is it. I plan to keep this car for a long time. I believe it will be in style for many year and eventually become a classic. It is a keeper.

Similar Products Used:

Can't compare it to anthing else except a 86 Accord which was also a good car. 97 Civic is still better.
