EX four door
Strength:
Well built and extremely reliable (thus far). It has only been to the dealer for scheduled maintenance. Fit and finish are excellent.
Weakness:
Cheap radio and tires. Basic style won't turn heads, but then, that's not why you buy a Civic. A good buy, especially used. If you don't mind spending a little more in the beginning you'll be pleased with fact that it requires minimal maintenance. Good, solid transportation without frills and headaches. Similar Products Used: numerous pieces of Detroit iron that shall remain nameless and one German vehicle. Bought over: Mazda Protege, Toyota Corolla and Geo Prizm. |

EX coupe, 4spd Tranny
Strength:
A lot of little things in the interior make it feel a lot nicer than a 17000 dollar car. I was very impressed with the handling of it as well. Feels very reliable (as all Hondas seem to be) and it's super comfortable. More room, more room, more room. The back has a completely flat floor, which makes a huge difference. My friends who are all 6' and taller fit decently in the back. We can take our 2-hour drives and it doesn't bother them much at all in the back. The front headlights look so much better than the previous civics it's ridiculous.
Weakness:
It's not a racer. I wouldn't even recommend trying to race it up. Even with the 5spd manual, it's still not going to be fast. It's a bigger car, and it's just not meant for speed anymore. Some panels seem to rattle with bass, and that's a little annoying. The 4spd tranny seems to be very choosey about where it shifts, not always in the best spots. Sometimes it will sneak in a downshift on you in very imprecise places, such as a heavy turn. And that down shift will take a toll on the handling; you can definitely feel it... I think this is a great car. It's not racey, but it's going to take VERY good care of you. If you are in college or just out of college and need a new car and don't have 20-30k to throw around, get the Civic. I normally hate civics, and I've fallen in love with mine. It's a great car for the money. Similar Products Used: 2000 Civic SI - Beats this car completely in my opinion. The size and little changes the car has made make it so much better than the previous civics. |

I bought this car used with a little under 165,000 miles on it, and it still runs like its brand new. Engine noise is nill. Roomy interior for such a small car. Rides like its on rails, even with semi bald tires.
Weakness:
Well, I drove the car for a month with little problems, exept that a couple of times the car just stalled on me for no appearant reason. Once on the highway in rush hour traffic. I took the car to the Rocky's the first week I had it and put over 3000 miles on it. It did good in the mountains, with the exeption of a lack of power due to the lawnmower style engine. We just got hit with a massive snow storm and this thing didnt do too well. Got stuck in the snow and while rocking back and forth, I knocked the drive axle off. Not really the cars fault. Factory radio sucks!! What was Honda thinking when they installed the 5 watt cassette player with the cheesy speakers? Threw in a JVC and some Blaupunkt rear deck speakers and the car sounds good now. Would definately recommend it. yes, I have had some problems, but mind you, this car has over 170,000 miles on it and I think that the problems I have had have been miniscule compared to the problems I could have on a Ponitac or Chevy with that many miles. Either you make payments on a new car or you pay to keep a high mileage one running. Similar Products Used: 1986 Saab spg 1993 plymouth minivan. this is the new family car. |

Great car for short money. Roomy compared to Jetta. Decent acceleration.
Weakness:
Gas mileage is not even close to what is advertised. Fuel gauge will never show a full tank and low fuel light goes on after driving 220 mile on a full tank. The radio has an anti theft feature that requires a code every time power is lost to the radio. The radio is constantly shorting out. When this happens all preset stations are erased and the antitheft code needs to be entered. The dealer claims that Honda is working on a fix for this problem. There really is no other car you can buy for under 18,000 that is a well made as a Honda. Similar Products Used: None |

What a neat little car. First of all, the ride was truly amazing. The suspension was completely up to the task of soaking up the bumps and the dips all the while maintaining its composure. What was really neat was the drivetrain. It was a 1.6 Liter 115 HP VTEC-E 4-Cyl with the CVT transmission (continuously variable transmission). It was sooooooo weird accelerating and watching the engine rpms fall and your speed increase. It was very smooth and always quiet. When in "D" mode, it seemed a little sluggish off the line, but that was quickly remedied when either put into "S" or "L". I can't get over how well this worked. The interior was done very nicely and the dash was damn near perfect. The structure was VERY solid. I have heard more squeaks out of my uncles 1998 E-Class Benz (ok so there were no squeaks in the Benz, but you get my point). Just a great little car! And talk about gas mileage...never fell under 35 mpg...EVER...and I do have a heavy foot!
Weakness:
I got the car in black and the paint job was really cool...but it swirled very easily. I asked a few other owners of the similar car and they had the same problem with it! Other than that....nothing was wrong with the car. I would completely recommend this car (now used) for someone who wants a small car that looks sporty, drives very nicely, and is fantatic on gas. This car was loaded, albeit sunroof, and never saw a mechanical problem! Go for it! Similar Products Used: We have had Hondas for a long time...and this is what you would expect...a GREAT car! |

Honda Civic EX
Strength:
Handling - About the firmest steering in its class, but it gives you the most feeback, you feel "at one" with the vehicle and total control. Suspension - Pretty good for a small car - bumps are well damped and don't leave you bouncing for a couple of seconds later like most others. Fuel Economy - Around town about 30 mpg, 35 on the highway. Reliability - Besides oil/filter changes and tire rotations, no maintenance. Fit and finish - very good.
Weakness:
Cup holder location - on this model, its right in front of where I but the tape deck, near the floor. Juggling tapes and water bottles while driving is a pain. Road noise - the stock Firestones are crap, they are noisy over uneven surfaces ("thrum") and squeal in tight cornering, though wet traction is decent enough. Horn - wimpy little bleat makes me laugh. Fun-to-drive reliable starter car. EX has nice feature package (moonroof, cruise, A/C, PW, power door locks, keyless entry, spunky engine (127hp). Accord and Acura CL/TL are your natural upgrade paths as your income goes up. If you want a 2001, I'd say get the Focus; if you want to save a few thousand, pick up a 98-2000 Civic. Similar Products Used: '98 Ford Escort ZX2 - a piece of junk. ' 95 Toyota Tercel - competent car, but very stripped down. Honda has far more features for the $$. '98 Corolla - good car, but overpriced for the features. Civic is better value. 98 Protege - weak engine compared to Civic EX - feels cramped. 98 Sentra - also a very good car (2nd choice) - excellent seats (best in class lumbar support), but Civic had more reassuring handling. 2001 Civic - a step backwards. I'd buy a 2000 Civic EX over a 2001. 2001 Focus SE - very nice car - better than the 2001 Civic in ride comfort, but the Focus is pretty ugly. Civic has much more attractive lines. |

Strength:
Very quick little car. Has nothing down low but once you get moving almost nothing can keep up. Handles better than most other small coupes. Gets excellent gas mileage, even when driven hard. Looks incredible for such an inexpensive car. Good trunk space. Easy to modify to your liking. An infinite after-market segment awaits.
Weakness:
Somewhat noisy at highway speeds. Engine revs at 4,000RPM at 70mph in 5th gear. Front seats are uncomfortable on long drives. Everyone who sees the DOHC VTEC sticker on the side of your car wants to race. I have owned this car for 6 months now. Each and every day I look forward to driving it. I cannot believe the performance you get for so little money. Also, since it's a Honda, you get reliability and very high resale value. Similar Products Used: Toyota Corolla - No comparison, the Civic is much better. |

economy, good looks, solid reputation for reliability
Weakness:
Extra ignition keys cost $48.00!!! (more below) I shopped around and educated myself on small cars and got exactly what I expected and am very satisfied overall. People should understand that this is a very reliable economy car that looks nice and has an excellent reputation. It is no longer a sports car and may not handle as well as some earlier Civics, however. I have gotten 42 mpg tops and 35 at the least with a 5 speed. The reason keys cost so much is that they have to be programmed by the dealer every time you buy one and all your other keys have to be reprogrammed at the same time. The total cost for me for one extra key was $48.00!!! Car is in fact a little noisy at highway speeds like others say but if you want a quiet ride (and sacrifice some reliability for it) buy an American made car. Overall, I believe most will be very happy with this car for a long time. Similar Products Used: Toyota Corolla, Subaru Impreza, VW Golf, Ford Focus, Chevy Cavalier |
