Honda Civic (2010 and older) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The Civic is Honda’s compact car that is offered in sedan and coupe versions. First introduced as a small, inexpensive hatchback in 1972, the Civic has increased in size during its lifetime while continuing to offer excellent fuel economy. The entire Civic line was all-new for 2006.

The basic Civic is available as a sedan and coupe and comes in several trims: DX, DX-VP, LX-S, EX and EX-L. The Civic SI, the performance-oriented trim, offers 57 more horsepower than the base model, a few more performance options and a starting price of around $7,000 more than the base Civic.

The Civic also comes in two eco-friendly options: the Honda Civic Hybrid, which is reviewed separately, and the GX, a hybrid alternative that runs on Compressed Natural Gas. Unfortunately the GX is only sold in California (and other states that have accepted California's Zero-Emission Vehicle regulations). It costs about $10,000 more than a base Civic.

Strength:

With high gas prices, this is the car!!; great looks, runs smooth, power after you get out of early gears, easy to add to to improve the appearance and performance

Weakness:

Seats give me a backache, no accelerating power really(MUST turn off AC), factory stereo could be louder, cup holder are in wrong area.

I just purchased the car, so I'm not sure yet. It seems to me that the car runs smooth, is GREAT on gas, and is reliable, but I don't know 'cause I've had it a week. I wish it had a little more power, but I'm not some hell burner anyways, so it suits me fine. It is slow taking off, but when you get going, it runs much faster. I like the sleek body style and the fact that the car can be fixed up more and be real attractive. I'm happy so far, but this is to be continued...

With the reputation and the resell value and the fact that it's great on gas, how can any other car really beat it?

Strength:

Great finish and feel, and hey its a Honda. I've dealt with this company since my first car in 92 (three different dealerships in that time) and they always seem to have time for me whenever I've had concerns.

Weakness:

No major problems. A little bit of noise from the electric window for a few months but seemed to cure itself.

Great car. I have the 5 speed stick shift and it runs smooth and has more than enough power for getting around. Pretty nimble on the country roads and very stable on the highway. The extra money for the sportier Si with 6 speakers, sunroof, and more power were well worth it. Fuel economy is great although it does drop substantially in the winter (as most cars do), and you don't really notice the savings until you hit the highway.
Stopping is crisp and straight but ABS in the Si would be nice.
Also would like a rear wiper. I know most car companies only put them on hatchbacks but there have been more than a few times I missed the wiper on my old hatchback.

Owned a civic 92 hatchback (great first car, got me through some tight spots). Looked at Mazda Protege (great car, almost took it over the civic because of great package offer at the time from Mazda but the interior feel just wasn't the same). Looked at Ford Focus (nice looking but nightmare with regards the dealerships...pushy and seem to think your a complainer for expecting a new car to be without problems. No offence to americans but I'll never purchase a car from an american company (Ford/GM/etc.). Their attitudes towards the clients STINK). Looked at the Golf and liked it alot but found it pricey and also heard of too many people experiencing electrical faults.

Strength:

Reliability is it's strongest point. But it also looks good and is very roomy.

Weakness:

I've had trouble with the A/C and the body panels dent if you just look at them.

I bought new a '93 4-dr Civic. It now has 205,000 mi. and it has never left me stranded. I drive over 70 mi/day, and it just keeps on going. Of course, it gets regular servicing, but hasn't required any major engine or trans. work. I plan to get another 200k out of it. Well worth the money!

Strength:

Amazing reliability, exelent longevity, great fuel economy

Weakness:

A bit boreing after a few years. 4 cyl engine produces little low end torque and has to be reved high for decent acceleration.

(pre 1997 Model) - I bought this car used 2.5 yrs ago with 68k miles. I now have 80k miles on it and the car drives like it is brand new. I have only performed expected maintenance on the car (timing belt as recommended, new tires, oil changes) and the car runs flawlessly. Good handling is a plus, though the car could use more horsepower. I suspect this car will last forever, and gets 5 for value, but looses one overall because the car has become a bit dull due to its lack of low end torque (there's acceptable power high in the RPM range if you want to go looking for it). All in all this is an exelent car that will provide years of trouble free transportation.

Strength:

I think my silver coupe looks fairly sporty (it has been mistaken for the BMW model). The car gets GREAT gas mileage. It has smooth pick-up. It is reliable. The standard stereo system is better than I expected. It has comforable back seats.

Weakness:

Definitely needs more horsepower so I recommend buying the standard trans to get the most power and control. I would of liked it if came with an ashtray (can you believe it is an option). In the truck, there are alot of speaker wires that hang a little low so you need to be careful when placing things in there.

(1998 Model) - Overall, it is very economical and stylish for its money.

Model Reviewed: EX Coupe

Strength:

crisp feel from steering wheel and gear shift. 7,000 rpm red line

Weakness:

needs 4 wheel disc brakes and maybe bigger rotors on the front; Body panels are succeptible to door dings; Factory stereo has keyless entry system wired through it so you cannot put an aftermarket stereo in this car (EX only)

(1997 Model) - Fun to drive economical car. It has a firm feel and predictable Honda handling. Standard transmission on this car is a must as the little engine has minimal power at low engine revs. However, if you push the little VTEC past about 4k rpm the valves emit a pleasant whining sound and you will be merging with the best of them. Pretty decent trade-off for 36 mpg fuel efficiency at 80-90 mph on the freeway. Great value for a car that has traditionally done well in the used market. I have two complaints: the body panels are light weight and prone to door dings; I also think that 4-wheel disc brakes would be a nice option as my brakes don't inspire confidence down hills or in emergency stops (another reason to stick with the standard transmission).

VERY,VERY dependable car, never a let down. Nice appearance. comfortable. great on gas. JUST PLAIN GREAT!

Weakness:

could be faster. radio is just average. Kinda sluggish at first when taking off.

GREAT running car, has NEVER given me any major problems, I till this day can just get up and take off to Las Vegas without ever hesitating a brake down. I have lots of faith in my little car, its put me through all my years of college, work and now my family. I keep debating buying another car since there is really no reason to. Its getting old, and I feel I want something a little newer just to have something cleaner and newer :-)

If you buy this car for the gas milage you'll be disappointed. Also if you expect performance....you want get it...the car is quite to ride in but "bouncy" on uneven pavement. If you drive on country roads you'll want to buy a LX instead of a EX...more headroom...Headlights on dark country roads aren't great...easy to run over things in the dark...

Model Reviewed: Civic Si 5 Speed 2 door coupe (Canadian)

Strength:

Fuel Economy: It kicks ass, providing you don't rev it like a madman (which is very difficult to resist given it's 8000 rpm redline). I just got back from Tobermory, and I averaged 38 mpg (16.7 km/L) on 600km driving around 160-180 km/h most of the way. I also did a tonne of high speed passing... passing people that were already going 140+km/h. hehe. Oh, I spent $25 canadian to travel 600km. Not bad!

Speed: Everybody thinks the Civic's are weak ass mofos. I think not. 2300 lbs on 125hp? It keeps up with 200hp 3500lbs cars, and then some. The gearing is great, tops out at 150km/h in 3rd, then at 187km/h in 4th. I think it's electronically limited because the needle doesn't move past ~187km/h (just freezes there). I don't know whether it's mechanical or electronical. It just a lot of pur too, when cruising on the highway, and somebody pulls up beside you, just drop it out of 5th and into 3rd (just don't drop it into 1st by accident and drop your tranny =P) and rev the sh!# out of it, and you'll burn them in no time. Definately a pleasure to drive/rev.

Appearance: Looks sleek and sexy, even though it's an inexpensive car.
I have the 2 door coupe, not the hatchback/sedan.

Space: The backseats are actually spacious! My friend who is 6'4" fit easily into the backseat for the 600km journey. Not one complaint from him! However, myself being 6'2", I feel oversized for the drivers seat. The speedometer is hid under the steering wheel and my head touches the roof... I'm still trying to figure out as to how to lower the seat, if at all possible.

Reliability: It keeps on going and going. Just change the oil every 5000-6000km, add gas & go. Nothing more.

Weakness:

Insurance costs: Ouch. I pay CDN$2700/year (w/o collision). I'm 18 years old, male with 1 year of driving experience. Previously not insured. Next year it will drop to $2000/year. Still pricey =/ [Civic Si's = #1 tree-wrapping magnet]

Repairs: Ouch. CDN$800-900 for a clutch job at a Honda dealership. I paid $500 at a garage. $700-$1000 for a new muffler at a dealership. Still a lot, compared to other clutch jobs that run only $250-$350. But then again, you pay for the quality (the last clutch lasted 172,000km!). However, it the old clutch died on me within 20 minutes of me driving the car (rev'd the f#*& out of it to 8000 rpm and max'd out the speed for a good 10 min, then shifted down.. bye bye clutch!)

Factory Stereo: Ouch. 30 watt 6.5" back speakers. 15w side speakers. Definately get a new stereo :) The tapedeck sucks too. But then again, I prefer CD players. I'm putting in a Sony CD Deck soon with some Infinity speakers soon for some quality trance/dance music.

Chips: Ouch. This car loves to be driven fast. I drove it at 180km/h down a gravel road. Besides being suicidal at the time, I managed to put some nice nicks and chips onto my paintjob. I also scratched my windows up. Not noticable from far away, but definately from close up. Avoid driving Civic's on gravel roads.

Speed Misconception: This car rides so smooth, that when you think you're going 50-60km/h, you're actually going 80-90km/h. And when on straight aways, it's hard to resist going fast (i'm talking 160km/h+). If you're caught speeding that fast, you're #$(*&@#. Car = impounded. License = suspended. You = arrested. Your life = f*cked. Yah. =p A love-hate relationships. The speeding tickets hurt too. My friend got caught doing 165km/h on the 401, and he braked like crazy too before he got clocked. The cop was nice enough to knock it down to 140km/h, and the prosecutor knocked it down to 130km/h. He's one lucky mofo.

5 speed stick: Frequent shifting in stop & go traffic induces severe road rage. Honking, middle-finger greetings, and severe spasms of profanity (particularily aimed at the eldery) are all common symptoms of being forced to drive slow & shift in 1st & 2nd gear.

Cup Holders: They are fine. Not as fancy as my friend's Volveo S70's, but decent. They do the job. A lot of people complain about these since the ash tray gets in the way. But then again I don't smoke, so I wouldn't know.

Wow. I'm very satisified with the car. I'd definately recommend it. It's my first car and I'm very satisifed with it. I just bought it, and would like to share my experience with it for any prospective car buyers. I get a rush everytime I drive it! :) If you're looking at getting a sport car for cheap, that's reliable and is FAST, this is the car for you! Be prepared to fork out big bucks though for insurance, repairs and speeding tickets though.

Pontiac Grand Prix GTP (1998): Smoother, but slower. But then again the engine in the Civic is a 1.6L, while in this car it is a 3.8L Supercharged one. No comparison. The civic is only marginally slower. Plus the gas economy is farrrrrrrr superiour. (I burnt 17L/100km of gas in my test drive, compare that to the 6-6.5L/100km i burn in the civic).

1994 Pontiac Firefly. HAH. =p The fuel economy in the firefly is a bit better, around 50mpg, versus 35-38mpg. But then again, the firefly has no balls and is the worst POS car ever made. I feel like I'm about to die any second in the firefly.
