Strength:

32 mpg! Targa Top. 2 seater. Corners well. More interior room than S 2000, MR2, or Miata. 6 footers fit comfortably.

Weakness:

A little under-powered.

Great Car. I bought it from the original owner in May 05'. Due to the owners, degenerative physical problems, he was unable to drive it very much. When I bought it, it only had 24,000 orig. miles. He supplied me with all the original paperwork, including the orig. window sticker from Honda. In some ways it reminds me of my old Toyota MR2. And (according to my wife) it's a little safer than my Harley.

Strength:

Very fun to drive in the summer. Good handling, many aftermarket parts available, AWESOME on gas, makes heads turn, most importantly VERY RELIABLE.

Weakness:

Just little things, the targa top squeaks when you're on bumpy roads, it's such a small car, that it's noisy when you drive, not good to drive in the snow, cup holder is in a hard to reach spot.

I love the Del Sol, it's an awesome 2 seater, so if you're looking for a summer car that is reliable and looks good, the Del Sol is the car of choice.Every screw in this car is made in Japan, and that's why if you take care of it, the Del Sol will run to 250000 miles with no problem. My car is at 125000 and have never had a mechanical problem with it. It's nice becuase it has good handling, and its pretty quick. The targa tp and the rear power window, have got to be my favorite things about the Del Sol. The targa top fits nicely in the back of the trunk. It can zip easily in and out of cars, but you should be careful because the car is so small that alot of trucks and cars don't see you, AND you have a BIG blind spot.

Awesome car! Bought it from a car buff who used to store it in his basement in the winter. Car looked and drove brand new. Only 36,860 miles on it when we got it. Handles well, good on gas, fun to drive. Fast and fun!

Weakness:

underpowered tiny bit of roof leakage heavy for its size

Having not been much of a car enthusiast prior to purchasing the Del Sol (to replace a totalled Corolla) - I must say it has sheparded me quite nicely into a full-on car addiction... The Del Sol is a typical Honda product - simple and tasteful design, excellent reliablity, excellent craftsmanship and of course, underpowered. I bought the SI model which is fun enough to drive but in 2005 would barely keep up with a v6 camry. I've since replaced the D16 with a B18C motor from the Acura Integra GSR and power is no longer a problem - but in the current climate of 250-300hp reasonably priced sports cars I would NOT recommend buying the del sol if you want to go fast. If you want to sit back and crusie PCH on a sunny day then the Del Sol is a really great car. Airflow management is good so the car is shockingly quiet with the top off (normal conversation possible at 80mph). The seats are great, the design of the interior is simple and easy, and the suspension and handling are just fine for most purposes - although if you plan to race the Del Sol will always be somewhat limited due to the chassis' tendency to bend and sway at will. That's often a downside to a targa-top design but some of my friends who are professional car designs consider the Del Sol to be one of the most unique and timeless designs of 90's automobile production. Overall this is a really great car to drive - I've enjoyed (even looked forward) to climbing into it every day for the last 3 years. When I travel abroad I often notice that the thing I miss most about home is driving my Del Sol...

Strength:

Incredibly reliable, nice top down driving experience, lots of trunk room for a two seater, well placed shifter and seat position create a very nice driving experience. Front wheel drive gives year round driving capability.

Weakness:

Civic suspension (soft and weak), understeer, front wheel drive, serious blindspots you need to get used to, a bit heavy.

The del Sol seems to have developed a bit of a cult following among younger drivers over the last few years. Given that there's a market for used del Sols, I thought I may be able to give some insight to those thinking of getting one. I bought my '95 del Sol SI new in 1996. I was 22 at the time and had my first job out of college. I finally sold it in 2004 at age 31 with 135,000 miles on it for $3500 to a 22 year-old kid that was psyched to be getting it. Funny how I now think of somebody as a kid that was the same age as me when I bought the car. Anyways, I digress :) The car was incredibly reliable. My parents were not thrilled about me getting a small two seater and thought it would prove impractical. I opted to keep my college beater so I was never forced to drive the del Sol in the winter. Good thing, too, because on the two occasions I was forced to drive in snow, it was terrible. Maintenance for the most part was limited to oil changes every 4000 miles or so. I replaced the belts and hoses at 85000 miles and did a tune-up at that time. Finally, after 8 years of hard driving by me, the clutch and tranny needed to be rebuilt. The synchros were shot and the pressure plate needed to be replaced. That work had to be done at 120,000 miles and cost me about $1500. In retrospect, I should have sold it as soon as I thought there was a problem...lesson learned. However, after getting rebuilt things were back to normal. Very, very reliable. Acceleration was acceptable. The SI engine wasn't too bad, the VTEC would have been the better choice. In stock form it did well enough I suppose. After 9 years in the car I thought the handling was excellent, what with it being a sports car and all. However, my eyes were opened after I bought my 04 MazdaSpeed Miata, a true rear wheel drive, 50:50 balanced, race tuned suspension, sports car with turbocharger. After my first 20 miles in the Miata, I realized how much of a sports car the del Sol wasn't. Don't get me wrong, the car handles nicely. But it has weight issues, serious understeer, and isn't very nimble. So, don't fool yourself into thinking this is a super handling car, it isn't. It handles nicely, but that's all. Performance can easily be upgraded with aftermarket mods. It's too bad that most Hondas are getting mods that don't actually do anything to increase performance. Loud mufflers, body kits and air filters aren't going to do much for you. If you want to improve the del Sol, I'd first consider stiffening up the supsension with improved shocks and adding some bracing...the car really flexes when the top is down. After that I'd look at what can be done to increase HP, but it's the suspension that needs improvement. The car does offer a nice driving experience on the inside, however. The del Sol seats you like a bathtub, you're down low with high doors. The seating position is very good and placement of the stickshift was perfect. Honda got this part right, no doubt. The rear speakers are right in back of your head, the bonded seats are excellent, the interior is well laid out and very good quality, and the overall fit and finish inside was outstanding. The power rear window was always a great feature on nice days when you didn't want to stow the top. Top down driving was always good. Never had any leakage problems. The trunk size was incredible. Two full size golf bags or multiple suitcases was never an issue. Even top stowed didn't present a storage problem. In all, this car was an incredibly smart purchase. I paid $16,500 for it new and got 130,000 nearly perfect miles out of it. It was with me through all of my 20s: first job after college, first apartment, a couple of girlfriends, road trips to the alma mater for football season, golf outings, grad school, meeting my wife, and our first house. I hope the kid I decided to trust her with has as many good experiences as I did.

Weakness:

Flipped over going 25 miles an hour

I had this Del Sol for 3 months before I wrecked it. I hit a light pole and the car flipped over. I WALKED AWAY WITH ONLY 3 BRUISES. This car, for being so small and sporty, was incredibly safe. I loved the car for the short time I had it, and I hate to have to let it go, but it is totalled. But the roof didn't cave in, both airbags deployed, the driver side window didn't smash, and I was calm enough to unbuckle myself and crawl out my passenger side door with only three bruises (from the steering wheel). I would recommend this car to anyone, I loved it and I want to cry knowing I can't have it anymore.

42 miles per gallon, even in town! Awesome styling Topless! Honda reliability Handling

Weakness:

Acceleration from S model is less than exciting. Honda/metric parts not carried by a lot of national auto parts chains. Dealership over charges for parts and service (learn to do your own maintenance like me!)

Yeah, it leaks when it rains - but that is just the price you pay for driving a convertible type car. The real rag tops are freezing in the winter time! Overall it is an impressive car, decent interior room for two people, BIG trunk space for being so small (a full Wally World cart load will fit even with the roof stowed back there!). Decent performance, even from the bottom-end model - acceleration is satisfactory at best, handling is really good because it is the lightest model. Previous owner did not care for it very well and it still held up good. Suspension and steering are tight at 102k miles, brakes have been replaced a couple of times, of course the timing belt around 97k like any Honda, etc. Doesn't burn any oil, only a very minor drip. One thing that people need to remember is to lube the seals for the top and doors with SILICONE lube. It has to be 100% silicone, I use Prestone spray and NAPA silicone grease. The spray works great for the door, window, and trunk seals. The grease is awesome for the top seals, stops the squeaking and even helped with the water leaks a little bit. If you are looking for an economical and fun commuter car, this is it! I have averaged 42 miles per gallon even in town. The handling is great, love driving it on the twisty mountain roads! It is a reasonable mid-life crisis kind of car: fun, yet pretty cheap and economical. Do not buy if you need to have more than yourself and 1 other person in the car, it is a 2-seater. If you want better acceleration get the Si or VTEC model, or swap engines. Do not buy if you want to drive in the rain a lot, most of them leak right on your lap - although the 95 and up had better seals and less leakage problems. Don't expect much performance from an automatic transmission, I have the 5-speed and that really helps. Do some searching before you buy one, read message boards and lots of reviews to decide if it is for you. My wife hates it, but I love it...

I'm on my 3rd Frog (Samba Green SI). Was hooked from the moment I saw pencil sketches in Car & Driver in 90. Drove Frog #1 off the lot new 9-2-93 and never looked back. I can wish for and imagine owning other cars but none in place of the Frog, only in addition to. This is more than a car its a state of mind open to any who embrace it.

Excellent reliability. Heavier than it looks.

Weakness:

Just got married. All of a sudden too small. Heavier than it looks. Too many Furious and Fast kids want to race me. I need a big ol' Buick in the worst way now.

I bought this car almost five years ago, and absolutely nothing has broken down that I didn't neglect or abuse. The car is a lot of fun to drive with the top down. With the top up, there's a lot of noise from the targa top. It's not the fastest car out there, but it keeps up with traffic okay. A few modifications would easily make it faster. It's the only Honda product I've owned, and it's by far the best vehicle I've had. If you want a fun two-seater, this can't be beat for the price.
