Strength:

Distinctive interior and exterior styling
Good Gas Mileage
Comfort

Weakness:

Below average reliability
Poor paint durability
Poor automatic transmission
Very stiff suspension

I paid just over 15,000 in 1996 for a new GLS model of the Elantra. You get lots of extras with this model including- air, power windows/locks, cruise, spoiler, etc. I will never buy another Hyundai automobile. In this case you don't get what you paid for. The transmission has needed to be replaced 4 times, the first at 17K miles. The list goes on and includes replacement of battery, alternator, starter, oxygen sensor, airbag (undeployed), pulse generator- canister- valve, transmission kick-down switch, ignition coil pack and plug wires. The list goes on to include faulty wiring in lock cylinders and lighting components. Anyway- my advice is to stay away from Hyundai automobiles- luckily my repairs happened within warranty- then 60K miles. Though the new ones come with the long warranty- it may prove to be a nightmare like mine. Spare yourself the constant trips to the dealership- spend a little extra money and buy a Honda or Toyota- or American of course.

SAFETY FEATURES, nice looking, good gas mileage, good sound system for the price, comfortable

Weakness:

Annoying bells when you have the car on and open the door

My parents bought this car almost 2 years ago and I started using it in January 99. I just got in an accident yesterday from a speeding SUV hitting my front right side which spun me around 3 times. The airbags deployed and my seatbelt worked, and the car crumpled like it is made to do in a crash. These things saved my life. I walked out of the car with no serious injuries, just a few bruises from the airbag. There happened to have been an ambulance at the intersection that was there and saw the crash. They did not expect me to get out of the car--they thought I would have very severe injuries. Thanks to the safety features working correctly, I am fine. The car is probably totaled, but I would like to get another Hyundai, preferably an Elantra because of how uninjured I remained in what could have been a very serious or fatal accident. I am sold on airbags now, and Elantras too!

Strength:

Lots of value for price paid. We got this car for $9995 w/only 102 mi. on it in the summer of 98. It has responsive handling, CD player, luggage rack, cargo net, cruise, A/C

Weakness:

For 130hp. it feels doggy at times, but for the most part when you step on the pedal, it will get into traffic w/much engine rev. Automatic trans seems to hurry thru the gears

I would definitely recommend this car in its 2000 models, w/the warranties they have for them you cannot go wrong. On our '97 we have had the gas cap recalled for causing too much pressure in the fuel tank, and the air bag light had come on about 3,000 mi. in, but these were all fixed under warranty. The paint seems to be a thin coat, this may be a problem down the line, but all in all for under 10,000 for a new car, you really can't go wrong.

Strength:

PRICE AND WARRANTY SHOULD BE ENOUGH INCENTIVE TO BUY A VERY GOOD AUTOMOBILE.

Weakness:

THE LOW END TORQUE IS LACKING. THE TRANSMISSION SEEMS TO LAG A LITTLE BIT.

THE WAGON WAS A REAL BARGAIN AT 11,888. IT HAS POWER WINDOWS,LOCKS AND MIRRORS. 2.0 LITER 16V 140 HORSEPOWER ENGINE. LOTS OF ROOM INSIDE. FOLD DOWN REAR SEATS GIVE YOU MORE CUBIC SPACE.NOBODY IN AMERICA CAN MATCH THE 10YEAR/100,000 MILE DRIVETRAIN WARRANTY. 5YEAR/60,000 BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY AND 5YEAR ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE. SURE THE FORD FOCUS IS A FEW CUBIC FEET BIGGER BUT IT HAS LESS HORSEPOWER AND LESS WARRANTY AND COST THOUSANDS MORE.

Everything. I am a salesman, and put an average of 2,000 miles per week on this car. It is pure driving pleasure... comfortable, great sound system, good gas mileage.

Weakness:

The door open/key in ignition chime is loud. I guess that is a safety thing, though.

I paid 13,880 for the fully loaded model (everything except the leater seats). I would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for an exceptional value. And don't forget the 10 year/100,000 mile warranty!

1999 Lincoln Towncar... Though this car was larger, the gas mileage ate into my bottom line. The Hyundai Elantra is cheaper to operate and believe it or not more comfortable to drive. The seats offer much more support.

I have had this car for 28 months, put 45,000 (highway) miles on it, and outside of replacing the battery, have not had 1 problem with it. I couldn't say that about any other
car I've had at the same mileage. I tell people this is the best car I've ever owned and I mean it. That reviewer with all the transmission problems must be doing something wrong or else has just gotten some lemons.

Weakness:

About the only thing I don't like is the interior upholstery; it stains easily and is hard to clean.

$13,600; would recommend without hesitation to anyone looking in the sub-$14,000 range. With the 100,000 mile warranty on the 2000 models, I don't see how you could go wrong.

Strength:

An extremely good buy for the money! With just over 5,000 miles on the odometer, I can not find a single flaw with this car. The fit and finish are great, the engine is peppy for it's size, even with the automatic transmission.

Weakness:

Head room for a taller driver is close, but acceptable.

The tilt steering lever, combined with the small amount of adjustment available, make this feature, well, almost not a feature at all.

The overdrive "override" function (some say power/economy switch) of the transmission is nothing more than a gimmick... it's just another way to lock out the 4th gear. I prefer what Daewoo has done with their automatic transmission. They left the 3rd gear in the shift pattern. Engaging the "power" button actually changes the internal shift points of the transmission to a "sport" mode. This has dual advantages: not only does the Daewoo accelerate faster because of the longer upshift times, but when you are finshed accelerating it drops down into overdrive automatically. In it's "sport" mode, the Hyundai stays in 3rd gear until you deselect the overdrive override. Can you say "higher RPM = faster engine wear and less MPG"?

I paid $14,800 for my 2000 Elantra GLS with package 6. I could have done much better, had I brought my homework with me to the dealership and not been so tired when I went. A fair price to pay for this car would be closer to $14,300. A super deal would be less than that.

I would recommend this car to anyone who likes champaign on a beer budget. Do yourself a favor and get the fully loaded model complete with sunroof, rear spoiler and upgraded stereo with CD player. Want to make it really stand out? Get the simulated wood trim or an aftermarket wood trim kit. This really makes a difference! Also, upgrading to add factory foglights is akin to Mission:Impossible. If you can, get this option put on by the dealer as well.

I also own a 2000 Daewoo Nubira CDX sedan. The Elantra is comparable in most every way, except for the 4 wheel anti-lock disc brakes that are standard on the Daewoo. I find the Hyundai brakeing system to be an excellant performer nonetheless.

$13K. totally recommend. Even got rear ended the first week I had it. No visible damage but had to replace the rear bumper for underneath cracks. Car that hit me (a VW) had to be towed away and needed a whole new front end. Fast, good mileage, smooth.
