Strength:
style, price, safety features, power, handling, standard features
Weakness:
trunk sheet metal seems flimsy. body dings easily! For the money, it's an incredibly good car. The 2001 GLE comes standard with air, cassette, power windows and locks, dual front AND side airbags, 5MPH bumpers, rear defogger, power mirrors...everything but cruise (they could throw everything else in standard...why not cruise?) I test drove the 2000 and the 2001 Elantra and there's no comparison...the 2001 is much much better. Gone are the road noise, engine noise, and wind noise that plagued the 2000 model. Plus, the handling is much improved and, even though the same engine is used, accelaration seems better. The feel of the 5-speed manual is also improved over last year. Similar Products Used: None |

My wife and I bought this car new in August,1999 with a $1000 rebate, which we found to be a good incentive. We also liked the warranty, which cannot be beat. The car has nice pickup for a small car and the sound system is terrific (six speakers w/CD player. Its also very roomy inside, lots of leg room, even though we are not tall people.
Weakness:
THE TRANSMISSION (Automatic) STINKS! As I write this, our Elantra sits in storage at the dealer, needing a third (that's right, no keystroke error) transmission. The first problem was with the car slipping frond second to third gear. A diagnostic was performed, found no codes. Removed tranny pan and valve body and changed PCSV seal. Cas was road tested by mechanic and says was shifting good. Rechecked car on lift and found front pump seal leaking. Removed tranny and found allen screw plug leaking at front pump assembly. Resealed screw and retested, OK. Then a month later, tranny was slipping again from second to third gear. This time it was a shift solenoid malfunction, replaced original in valve body. Upon leaving with this car, tranny was still slipping, bought it back, very unsatisfied. Turns out the the tranny was "burned up". Needless to say, I was burned up with the work there, and let the service manager know about it. They replaced the tranny, which took 5 days (they gave us a loaner car). Now it turns out that this tranny has a defective torque converter. Our car has been layed up for three weeks now and they won't get a tranny in until January, three months away. My wife and I have already claimed this car to be a lemon and we are demanding a brand new 2001 Elantra. The service manager was very sympathetic and has told the District Manager, whoever he or she is that we are demanding a new car. The District Manager offered to make the monthly payments on the car until the tranny comes in. The service manager told him/her that is unacceptable and that we want a new car or my wife and I will take them to court and hit them with the lemon law. We are still awaiting a call from this District Manager, who says he/she has to get approval from his/her boss in regards to getting a new Elantra. I certainly would not recommend a 1999 Elantra. The 2001 Elantra looks very nice, totally redisigned and can only hope that the car does not develop a reputation for transmission problems. This car is awesome. I have had it almost 2 1/2 years (bought new), and I have put almost 75,000 miles on it. The gas mileage keeps getting better. Great power with the 5 speed. handles incredibly. roomy, well-designed interior. A-1 reliability. still turns heads
Weakness:
body dings VERY easily. engine is not the smoothest. high noise levels at times. for the price of these cars, you just cannot beat them. Their slogan is "driving is believeing" and that is right on. Everyone who drives this car gets out thoroughly impressed. Mine had the 5 yr/60K warranty; but the new ones have the 100K warranty.................so it's an even better deal. in almost 75K the only thing I had to replace (besides normal maintenace items such as brakes/tires) is the right/rear strut (under warranty) and the interior door panel on the drivers side (my elbow cracked it; but it was still covered under warranty). My friends all wish they had made out as well with their escorts and neons. In fact, a friend of mine just traded his escort in for a y2k elantra! Now I want an 01 elantra! Similar Products Used: 1997 toyota corolla. The Elantra is a much better buy overall. the corolla is SLOW, and soft, and $$$$$$$$$. The hyundai seems to hold up just as well. |

A ton of features for very little cash. Great style with the spoiler and comfort.
Weakness:
For 140hp it should have more pep. Very loud engine noise. It took me some time to find a car that can offer alot for very less. With the features and warranty this car offers it truly unbeatable in its class. This car takes a big lead in its class. Similar Products Used: none |

Came equiped with alloy wheels, CD player with really good sound system,
Weakness:
Can't say too much here except that I've had to replace the front right wheel bearing Twice, and it is acting up again. Yes I would reccomend it, and even more so if you can get your hands on a SE. Gas efficency is really good as well, no matter what the gas of price it seems as though it always costs no more than $30 dollars to fill from empty. I paid about $11,000Can for it, and it is well worth it. Similar Products Used: This is my first car that I bought off my Dad, and he now wishes that he never sold it to me. |

The pick up on the 5 speed is great. Surprisingly enough the stereo system is awesome. I love the passenger and driver side airbags. Power windows, Brakes, and steering. The backseat is amazing. I'm 5'9" and I put the driverside seat all the way back. I then put myself into the backseat...no problem at all. My knees are about a 1/2 inch away from the front seat. My husband is 6'5" and sat in the passenger side with no problem. Great gas mileage. Cute car overall. I'm actually getting more looks from guys in this car then my Tahoe Sport...interesting, huh?
Weakness:
I wish it came standard with ABS. Not too fancy in the interior of the car, actually rather bland. I got a brand new 2000 Elantra 4 door sedan for 11,261 dollars. That's incredible. It's basic, but it has the right components. It has the driver and passenger side airbags, which are very important. It has the great stereo system, and did I mention the great gas mileage? I know that I have only had this car for a week. The reason I bought the car is because of this website. I figure that 17 out of 20 reviews highly recommended it and the price was right on, might as well check it out. Being use to a Tahoe Truck, I didn't think I would like to bend down into a car again. Plus being that it's a smaller car, I would feel a little cramped...but no way. I feel like I have so much room in that car. I love it and I would recommend it to anybody. Similar Products Used: Ford Fiesta. I loved my Ford Fiesta, probably because I put a 2000 dollar stereo system in that vehicle. The vehicle didn't need gas, it would run off the beat of the stero. My fiesta was also a 5 speed, which I love to drive anyway. I would pick stick shifts over automatics anyday. |

For the price you cant beat it. Comes standard will many things that most cars have as options. It picks up and moves if you want it to you just got to lay into the pedal a little. Has a warrenty that you cant beat.
Weakness:
The whole thing about small cup holders that are in front of the stereo. When laying on the gas padel for fast take offs and going up hills, it can put a good dent into your gas mileage. The body also dents realitively easy. You just got to keep in mind how much the car cost, you cant spend $12,000 and expect BMW quality. For the cost, I find it a great car. I've, had the car for about three months (7,000 miles) and i have not had a probablem with it other than a few dents on the body (which a couple are from a deer). I would highly reccomend this car if you are on a budget and need a good realiable vehical. Similar Products Used: Kia |

Everything! I bought this car used with 32000(all highway miles) miles on it and it drives like new. The sound system is great and i have never had such smooth riding breaks. i feel like i should have paid more for what i got. I got it with power everything and cruise control, a luxury for someone who has never been able to afford either.
Weakness:
I have left my lights on like 50 times because there is no reminding beep like my old car. I drive a manual and sometimes it can be tricky getting the car in reverse. The paint has also started to chip away around the door handle. I paid 9000 for this car and it has got to be the best deal i will probably ever get on a car. I feel very safe inside my car. The gas mileage is wonderful and i love the sound system, its very roomy for me but my husband who is 6'3 and 210 lbs feels a little crunched when he drives, but he always wants to drive because he loves my car just as much as i do. I survived a crash at 55 MPH and walked away with a small laceration caused by my watch not getting along with the airbag. Good power, great sound system, and very stylish.
Weakness:
None. I went out as soon as I got the insurance settlement and bought the exact same car. I paid $14,500 out the door tax, title, everything. For the features I got, everything except the wood trim and leather, it is an amazing value. Ironically, my insurance went down $100 dollars per year after getting the new one following my accident. The 100 watt CD upgrade which seperates the woofers and tweeters in the front of the car make an amazing difference. I now have a stereo that sounds BETTER than the system I spent an additional $1,750 on in my Escort. Similar Products Used: '94 Ford Escort - No comparison. Loud engine, poor suspension, radio knobs made for Mini-Me, Mortuary slab style seats, rattle, creak, whine and hiss!Auto trans. sucks the big moose peepee. Not impressed, and I liked the 2000 Kia sephia better. Don't get the performance parts talked about in another review unless you want to TOTALLY void your warrenty!!!!!! Similar Products Used: Had this for a month and a half, new with only 28 miles on it. My company sent it back and demanded a refund after the boss used it to confirm my reports. Terrible! I tried other cars from another dealer and had the same in almost all problem areas. I am now driving a Kia sephia 2000 model. A word of advice...The reviews favor Hyundai over Kia, but my experience has been exactly opposite. ( except the standard shift is the way to go on either! )You should definitely try both! |
