Strength:

This is a great car for the money, you can't go wrong with the warranty. Lots of power, and great standard features. Also, very high crash ratings for their class. Definately upgrade to the 6 speaker CD player, well worth the money! Sound great for a little car. And I recommend the moonroof, it is great! No wind noise and I didn't even put on the cheesy looking sheild that came with it. It feels much bigger from the inside than it looks from the outside. Very roomy and spacious. Huge Trunk! I couldn't be more pleased.

Weakness:

Had the same problem as other people with my check engine light coming on because the dealer didn't tighten the gas cap, idiots. Also, the seats are kinda stiff, with not a lot of lumbar support, also power seats would be nice considering everything else is power. Other than that, it is an excellent car!

I definately recommend this car to everyone! You can sit 4 people comfortably. The trunk is huge. I have a fully loaded Elantra with a moonroof, AC 6 speaker CD system, Cruise Control, AT, power everything, except seats, and I only paid about $15,000 out the door, with tax title and fees, and they tinted my windows for free! This is my first new car and I feel as though it was the best decision for me! It is something that I look forward to driving everyday, I wish that I lived farther from work now so that I could drive it more often. I find myself taking the long way home or the more curvy road to see how the car handles. I am having so much fun with this car, and you will too. This is a great car for single people or for small families. I have gotten so many compliments on my Elantra, and people are very surprised when I tell them that it is a hyundai.

I sat next to a brand new civic a few days ago and I knew that I paid at least 2-3k less than they did and they had the DX model with nothing in it! I just feel like I made the best decision, by going with Hyundai.

Strength:

This car is the best in its class and price range. For less than most of the competition you get a load of standard features and a fantastic warranty. The base model comes with Power steering, AC, power windows, mirrors and locks. Cassette stereo, front and passenger airbags and side air bags too! An 18/19K Honda Accord doesn't even give you that without a little extra charge!

Weakness:

I haven't encountered any so far.

I bought a base model stick shift and I'm very happy with it. I've also taken a lot of grief from the un-educated people out there that laughed when I told them what I had bought. To all other 2001 Elantra owners out there who are also taking grief from fools. Tell them that the LA Times reported on the Elantra due to it's high ranking with the Consumer Reports magazine. They ranked this car higher that the Corolla, Sentra, Saturn, Sephia, Nubria, Jetta GLS and all but the top Focus. Also, this car recently came NO. 1 in rear end 5mph crash tests. Doing better than some of those high cost luxury cars out there! Hyundai have built a really good car and it won't be long before more and more people start to see that.

Similar Products Used:

I looked at the Daewoo Nubira, Kia Spectra, Toyota Corolla, Ford Focus, Mazda Protege and the Nissan Sentra. None came with the same standard features or build quality that the Elantra has.

Strength:

Great acceleration for a 2.0L engine, and it is a strong, good sounding engine as well. The seats offer great support, everything is powered! The Manual transmission is a blast, and it has a great CD player and 6 speaker sound system. oh, Michelin MXV4 sport tires are great! Oh handling over 130 mph is good, with none of the rocking i had in my Z24

Weakness:

Lacking dual wishbone front suspension, so handling through mountain roads is not as fun as it should be. Um, the paint gets pulled off very easily.

This car is great! It is fun, quick, agile, and a blast to drive in traffic. milage is great, and it handles well at speeds no one should usually drive at :) Also, the car has great high end acceleration, however, I feel the gears aren't tuned ight, because at 65mph in fith, the rpms are too high, and while this gives good accel., it brings about worse gas milage than this car should have. Anyone who wants a good car that's fun to drive at a modest cost should buy this one. Oh, do NOT gowith auto transmission, go with manual.

Cavalier Z24 beats it off the line but this car controls easier at 130+mph.

Strength:

Comfortable, quiet, reasonable acceleration even with automatic transmission, excellent stopping with ABS, nice handling/cornering with traction control (option package #5), good mileage (29-30 mpg), comes with most "options" anyone would want, unbeatable warranty

Weakness:

Was difficult to find one with ABS/Traction Control (option package 5)

Outstanding value. 2001 Elantra performs very well, is very quiet and comfortable, and looks like an expensive European sedan.

Also own Camry and Sable, and also tried VW products. Elantra back seat isn't as large, but otherwise compares very favorably, for much less money.

Strength:

The best qualities of the car include the body, the gas mileage, and the price.

Weakness:

The worst qualities of the car include brakes which have to be replaced about once every six months. In addition to the brakes the gear shifts also have function problems. The acceleration is very slow the car takes a while to gain speed. The transmission is also another big problem. My car only had 12,000 miles whn I purchased it by the time I raeched 36,000 miles it ha to be replaced.

The experience that I've had with my car are all basically bad. It has been a bad deal from the beginning of the purchase up until this very point. I have invested more in this car within the last three years than some people have invested in vehicles that they've had for twenty years. This is not a product that I would recommend to anyone.

Similar Products Used:

The car is basically a low budget car that is not put together well at all . The ride is not smooth at all compared to other cars. Compared to the Mitsubishi Galant the car rides like a wagon on a very rugged hill. I think that it is the worst investment that anyone could make when purchasing a car.

Strength:

Unfortunately there aren't too many good qualities in this car. About the only one I would say that I enjoy the most is the CD player, and it had to be replaced.

Weakness:

The trans. is horrible. The brakes are very catchy, and rough. The ride is hard. And the seats are the most uncomfortable theings I have ever sat on.

This car isn't even worthy of a rating in my book. Since I bought the car in Dec. of 2000 I have had nothing but trouble. The engine light has come on more times than I can count, the brakes need to be replaced, the radio broke, the tran. messed up and the seats kill my back. I only have 50,000 miles on the car and I hate it. It had 43,000 miles on it when I bought it. BIG MISTAKE!!!! I will neve in my life waste my money an another Hyundai again.

This car doesn't even come close to anything I have ever driven before. I will never buy another Hyundai again.

Gas Mileage

Weakness:

Out of box reliabiliy

I have 10,000 miles on mine and it has been great except for one major problem.

My accelerator stuck. The dealer at first said there was nothing to do about it. I pushed them to repair and they found that the speed position sensor is defective on these cars. They kept the car and gave me a loaner for 2 weeks until the new part was available.

Besides that the gas mileage is 32 for combined city/highway driving, and the car is quiet and comfortable. I feel the shifter isn't very precise and is sometimes hard to to shift, but overall the car has lived up to my expectations.

I can recommend this car, but have them check the speed postion sensor and carefully test drive and look for rattles. I went through 3 cars on test drives to find one rattle free.

This is a perfect car for a student, a commuter, or anybody who would like the option of nice new car vs. a used car.

Compared to Civic, Protege, Sentra, and Corolla. These cars were all $3K-$6K more with the same equipment. The Elantra performed better and was more comfortable.

Model Reviewed: Elantra GT

Strength:

The euro-hatchback design is stunningly nice, and looks like almost nothing else on U.S. roads. The overall exterior styling (headlights, design, tail end, fit and finish) not only is great, it suggests a more expensive car. The interior, including the gauges, controls, and standard leather seats, is also reminiscent of a more expensive car. There are lots of standard features for the money. The ride is well-controlled and smooth. There are good color choices (especially the Cardinal Red which my car is in). The automatic transmission shifts smoothly. The interior is quite comfortable and roomy. The safety features are great (side impact airbags in a $15-16K car are phenomenal), though models with ABS-traction control can be hard to locate. The warranty is very good, just as with other Hyundais. The gas mileage is pretty good - seems like it will be about 33mpg highway, though I haven't extensively tested it.

Weakness:

Questionable reliability - time will tell if this car is as reliable as, say, Honda. So far everything is fine, but I've had the car for <1000 miles.
Head room would be a little tight for those over 6' tall in those cars equipped with the optional sunroof.
Because the GT model is in short supply, certain options and color choices are hard to find, and there is not much haggle room. Maybe this will change over time.

The Elantra GT model is a 5-door hatchback model which has very recently been introduced into the US. It currently is in limited supply. I have been driving mine for several weeks and have yet to pass another one on the road (though I have seen a few other GTs in dealership lots). I like the design of this car, the safety features, and the value-for-money, but time will tell if this car proves reliable. The list of standard features for the price is amazing -there is even remote keyless entry, car alarm, and a leather-wrapped shift knob and steering wheel.

Similar Products Used:

More car for the money than similar offerings by Toyota, Honda, Nissan, etc. Also, these automakers do not offer a 5-door hatchback similar to this one.
