Model Reviewed: Sonata GL 4-Cyl Automatic

Strength:

My Sonata is very reliable,I commute about 50 miles everyday and nothing seems to be breaking apart. The gauges are oriented very nicely and organized. Looks are still not getting outdated and it is very reliable. Power mode makes the Sonata fun to drive.

Weakness:

There are several weaknesses in the car. First, the engine is god damn too weak and noisy. I suggest all people to get the V6, it is worth the extra dollars. Second, all minor plastic materials are getting deteriorated. The center console, passanger compartment, power doorlocks, rearseat fold down switches, are all broken!! transmission is rough and when you dont warm up your car in the morning, oh my gosh the car feels like it only has 2 horsepowers. The take off is slow and takes me about 13 sec. to get from 0-60. You cant feel any torque in the ranges of 2000-4500 rpms and the muffler popped. I think that is about it.

I think overall, car is ok. I mean I did only spend 16,000 for a sedan with full options and I should be happy that it even lasted 6 years and I think it will last another 6 years. The car is extremely reliable but it is just that the quality of the ride is kinda crappy. I maxed out at 105 mph and I was soo disappointed because the gauge has upto 140 mph. Power is really really weak and the tranny is crappy too but the car is god damn realible. I never had to do anything other than oil changes and put in gas. The flaw is that too much minor things break in the SOnata. I heard from everyone that the new ones are really much more improved so I took a test drive and oh boy it really did indeed. But I still like my Sonata and I plan to keep it until it dies out because the resale value is somewhere like around 2500 hahah oh my gosh.

Strength:

It looks cute.

Weakness:

Car has had numerous brake jobs. First brake job was at 2200 miles! A/C Compressor had to be replaced at 4000 miles. I have had 8 major brake jobs in the 2 1/2 years that I have had the car. It was the worst decision I have ever made!

I would not recommend a Hyundai to my worst enemy. My 1971 Valiant had less problems than this vehicle.
I am stuck with it because it is over-priced and the value is zilch.

Strength:

No Rattles, decent power, good for the price

Weakness:

RELIABLITY, resale value is poor. Had to buy another Hyundai because they were the only ones that would give a decent trade-in on the old one.

Bought the car had no problems for the first month. Then dropped a valve going 5 miles per hour and dead motor. Spent BIG bucks replacing that because it happened 250 miles from the nearest dealer who only paid for a little over half of it. Then had idling problems with the replacement motor after about 8 months and 15000 miles on it. Not impressed with tranny shifting either. Have had too many problems with it, mostly small problems, but nevertheless still problems.

My old 86 Toyota truck has 250,000 miles on it and I drive it 50 miles back and forth to work with no problems. So I expect reliablity which I haven't gotten.

Model Reviewed: Sonata 4 spd auto

Strength:

Nice and roomy, rides smooth and better than that of a more expensive make or model. Has good pick up and zip to be a 4 cylnd. alot of extras to be standard. It is a nice ride. Good gas milage

Weakness:

Nothing really. If anything, when I turn the a/c on you hear a noice that's irritating. Other than that, so far everything is nice

Thus far, I have no complaints. It is a nice smooth ride. The engine is quiet and I feel like I'm in a luxury car. It has good pick up for a 4 cylinder and handles nice. Standard came with a/c, power windows and locks, and cruise control. All that is extra money in another car. It fits 5 people comfortable. I got the silver color and with that it makes it look cleaner and richer. I would definitly reccommend this car to someone who is looking for a rich feel on a tighter budget like myself.

Strength:

Awesome ride quality! Very smooth and comfortable. Feels like a small luxury car and drives better than my mid eighties S class Mercedes.

Weakness:

The clutch takes a little getting used to because is engages low in the clutch pedal travel, but once you get used to it it's a sweet stick shift.

Hyundai is an excellent value both in what you get for the money and in quality. The ride is smooth and quiet. When I first test drove this car, I was messing with the radio for a coupel minutes and mext thing I know I am going 90 miles per hour. There wasnt a bit of shimmy and it was not noticibly louder. I suggest anybody in the market for a new car in the mid teens take a look at the Sonata!

I also have a '96 Accent and it has proven very reliable. Compared with a new base honda Accord, the Hyundai is a much better ride, much more satisfying to drive.

Strength:

Quiet, smooth ride. Peppy in the "sport" mode. Looks good and nice stock alloy wheels.

Weakness:

AC could blow a little harder--it gets HOT in Georgia in the summer! Breaks squeal a little--guy at Midas says there is nothing wrong with them, they just squeal.

This car has not given any problems at all. Bought it new in January 1998, so I got a great deal on it. Starts right up every morning. V6 gives spirited performance, but gas mileage is not real good. For the money, I don't think it can be beat. In late 1997, we thought we were going to buy an Accord. At the last minute in Jan 1998, we decided to look at some "Year end closeout" 1997 Sonatas. For less money, we found a car with a larger back seat, bigger trunk and a bigger engine. Resale may not be as good, but I'm glad we bought it instead of the Accord.

Strength:

Like the stereo decent ride when we have it out of the shop, nice color.

Weakness:

Well let me begin with the driving expirience, the ride is rough, the power is non-existant 1st gear will take you up to 5500 rpms and get you going about 35mph before it shifts the car has already been in the shop for about 2 months total time since ive owned it (only driven for about 7 months of the last 9 due to whatever problems you can think of replaced window motor, keyless entry system tried 3 times now to adjust the trunk latch so it will close, and still i must take it back tommorrow so they can fix the dash lights and tail lights. i would never recommend buying a hyundai, nor buying one in augusta at TAYLOR HYUNDAI, the service technicians are not familiar with the cars they work on and can not even perform a proper check to be sure all is working before you drive it off the lot.

this car sucks
