Mazda 626 (1979 - 2002) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The Mazda 626 is a mid-size model that carries the authority of being fully imported from Japan. Built to a high standard, it is frequently reported by its owners to be trouble free for years on end.

The Mazda 626 is offered as a four-door sedan with 2 engine options; a 2.0-liter, 125-hp 4-cylinder or a 2.5-liter, 170-hp V-6. Also choose between a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic. ABS is standard.

The 626 replaced the 616/618 and RX-2 in 1979 and was sold through 2002, when the new Mazda6 took over as Mazda's large family car.

Strength:

Fast, comfy, reasonable gas mileage for a high strung 6 cyl.

Weakness:

Reliability and Mazda''s seemingly reluctance to help me out here.

From the outside this seems like a good car. I bought it because it was one of the only 6 cylinder 4 door cars available with a manual transmission. It''s quick, comfortable, and reasonable on gas. But...When it was delivered to me it had a bad left front wheel bearing. Before I got it back to them to replace that, the sunroof fell out of its track. Fortunatly, it didn''t rain till I got it fixed. At about 45K, (just before the warranty ran out at 50K) it needed a power steering pump, acc. drive belt tensioner, and the drivers sun visor replaced. OK, not too bad yet but more than I would expect on a car with only 45K miles on it. Keep in mind that 150-200K miles is pretty common on a car these days. Now comes the kicker. At 62K, it overheated and died on the side of the road. Towed it to a dealer and I am now being told that I need a new engine. Needless to say I am not happy about this. So far, I don''t seem to be having any luck with Mazda regarding the fact that they sold me a car that, in effect, lasted only 60K miles. They haven''t confirmed it yet, but I suspect that the water pump seized, took out the timing belt, overheated and either seized the bottom end or crashed the valves or both. Hmmmm, Ford=Mazda these days. The old Ford thing, Found On Road Dead seem to certainly ring true here. I''ll be shying away from Mazda and Ford in the future.

Strength:

Turbo, accelaration, moon roof, huge cargo space as it was a hatchback. winter start...very reliable

Weakness:

expensive parts, cornering,

It was my 2nd car. My first car was a 1990 VW Jetta. Handling was good but Jetta lacked the power. The moment I took the GTX 626 for a test drive I decided to buy it. It was leaking oil.. it was the pressure switch.. $10.00 . Boy did this car pull. The turbo kicks in after 2500 rpm.. and in all gears it just pulls till 6000 rpm. It had 16" wheels... big difference...I put K&F, and free flowing mufler. I used to burn rubber on 3rd. Raced it against 1990 audi 200 turbos and 1996 A4 2.8... smoked them... took it upto 195 km.. steady as a rock in a stright line. The cornerings were sloppy at high speed... I bought it when it was 193K and sold it at 265K. Still miss the turbo. I believe it was the best 626 mazda ever made. Pulled better than my 325. Current modle of 626 sucks.. mada should bring those GTs back again.

Weakness:

it rattles from the sunroof, ocational sounds from the dash.

I bought the 1994 Mazda 626 LX v6 with high expectations. It has 124,000 miles. The exceleration and braking is exellent. It handles well on corners. I highly recomend this car. I put a K+N filtercharger on it and now it really moves.

reliable (except for transmission), quick (for a 4 cyl), and very roomy interior for its size. oscillating A/C vents are very cool.

Model Reviewed: /626 ES V6

Strength:

Ride-sooooo nice, feels more expensive than it is. Interior- Leather seats are way supportive and comfortable. Tasteful layout of everything Acceleration is very strong Decent gas mileage especially for a V6 Great Looks- Anyone who thinks a more expensive and very generic looking or Camry or Accord can match the curves and alloys of the 626 is out of their mind. Reliable Fun to drive with good handling.

Weakness:

Nothing major but sometimes I do get some annoying little sounds coming from the dash...or somewhere but then they go away. Biggest flaw is that the car revs high. 5th gear is NOT overdrive. 70mph=3000rpm...very strange for a 6 but car doesn''t seem to be straining but would be nice if it was geared different. Don''t know if the automatic does the same.

Owned this car coming up on 10 months. It''s my first midsize. ES or LX V6 is the only model you should get of the 626.....don''t buy the 4cyl. Have had no major problems with this car so far.

Strength:

Slick body, driftwood is a beautiful color. Looks just as good or better than a Mercedes or BMW

Weakness:

no comment

I bought this car with 54 miles on it. I have kepted up the maintenance on this car to the"T". Transmission went out at 82,000 miles. No one wanted to own up to it that Mazda does not make a good engine. I like to travel so what was implied to me is that I put too many miles on the car in three years. This is my 2nd Mazda but I won''t buy another one. Reseach shows, too many transmission problems and the company is not doing a recall.
