Mazda 626 (1979 - 2002) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The Mazda 626 is a mid-size model that carries the authority of being fully imported from Japan. Built to a high standard, it is frequently reported by its owners to be trouble free for years on end.

The Mazda 626 is offered as a four-door sedan with 2 engine options; a 2.0-liter, 125-hp 4-cylinder or a 2.5-liter, 170-hp V-6. Also choose between a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic. ABS is standard.

The 626 replaced the 616/618 and RX-2 in 1979 and was sold through 2002, when the new Mazda6 took over as Mazda's large family car.

Strength:

Good pickup. Love the interior Nice looking car. Fun to drive

Weakness:

The only complaint I have about the car is It sometimes jerks in between gears.

At the time of me writing this, there were 160 reviews on this site. And I read all the 626 reviews for the 1991 Mazda. I was amazed at all the good comments on this car. I recently got in a car accident and totalled my car. I was ok. Well I had to get a different car. After about a week of searching I got in touch with a guy that had this car. I paid $1,000 dollars for it and Am beginning to feel like I stole it from the guy. It looks really good, despite the fact that the paint is quite faded. I found a bra for the car in the junk yard for $10.00 looks even better now. Oh yea I put some chrome hubcaps on it. Anyway It looks cool! And the interior is just like new. It has 160,000 miles on it but its on its second motor. But all that was replaced before I bought it. I have put probably 3000 miles on it and just love to drive it. It''s old, but paid for. Not a bad compromise, if you ask me. Like I said earlier I feel like I got a hell of a deal. Only time will tell I guess. It feels like a good car.

Strength:

It is very roomy and it has power everything. Very good heat and a/c

Weakness:

very nosiy, back transmission, hard to wind up the window(they''re powered)keep getting stuck and they wind-up slow. Bad on gas, low front, front brakes give out quickly

Stay away! I repeat stay away. I ended up with this car becuase i have bad credit and this was the only car my dealer could have gotten the bank to finance. I am a female, 20 at the time, and a new driver. Very clueless about cars. All I know is put the key in the keyhole and start it up.from the day i drove off the lot my engine light was on. I had no idea what it was. I called my dealer and he told me to bring it in. They didn''t know what was wrong( I think they was bluffing because they didn''t want to fix it)becasue 90 days later i brought it back and they sent it to the mazda dealer and i had about $700 worth of repair. From the start my car also started to do a kind of strange jerk everytime it switch gears(it felt like i was being hit in the rear by another car) Come to find out it was the transmission. Like many mentioned before the car SUCKS when it comes to the transmission. Also it is back on gas. A tank of gas only last me a day and a half and i bearely go anywhere.

Strength:

Oscillating vents in the cockpit; Well-positioned Hazard light switch; Large Trunk, with 60/40 folding seats accomodates large items well; Quality of interior materials, including stain resistant fabric.

Weakness:

Faulty transmissions, model years 1995 to 1999, $2500 to repair; Faulty electrical subsystems, $500; Exhaust system rusted (in NC, even), $600; Several other minor mechnical failures, including the tachometer.

Numerous malunctions; unresponsive maker; Mazda knew about the transmissions failing and they never recalled the vehicles. Incidentally, the transmissions were manufactured by Ford. Several Ford models have the exact same failure rates and problems as the Mazda 626.

Strength:

Good acceleration for a 4 cyl. Exterior design looks nice

Weakness:

Poor insulation and bumpy ride. Not a reliable car.

It is the most problematic car I ever had. Radiator has leaked a few times, compressor has given way, transmission''s jerky and just overall dissatisfying. Not many features from a 2 ltr car.

Strength:

Very, very reliable. Smooth four cylinder. Quiet for an economy car. Smooth shifting 5 speed transmisson.

Weakness:

Goes through front brakes faster than any other 5 speed car I''ve owned. I replace brakes every year as with my other cars it was every year and a 1/2. Needs more horsepower and torque. Automatic must be very slow.

I''ve owned this vechile now for five years and it''s been a very good relationship. This is one very reliable car and hasn''t given me any trouble at all. I have 91000 miles on it and i just can''t believe how solid it still feel.

Strength:

Sporty, nice looking, well designed, Sweet factory Sound system(6 spk), good road handling. Great on Gas.

Weakness:

Parts and service are expensive. A/C compressor died within a short period of repair. Almost impossible for installing a trailer hitch. Was difficult to put a remote car starter on the 5 spd edition. ***Advice*** If your in the market for a Mazda 626 you''d be smart to do your homework and stay away from the automatic trany models and the V6 models because of head gasket problems. Otherwise the 626 Cronos LX is the best deal on the market.

After doing some homework I found that the 5spd 4cyl 626 LX cronos was the best deal on the market. I have no complaints about the car. Miner repairs. It''s sporty, chicks dig it, and most of all is fun to drive. Very Reliable!

Strength:

Stylish interior, plenty of leg room (I''m tall). With dealer and factory incentives, the price was reasonable in 1999. Handling is excellent, especially with the factory Michelins.

Weakness:

4 cyl. engine is a joke, the smallest in its class. Boring body style. Transmission problems.

I bought my 626 new in 1999 and have since put 69000 miles on it. At 51000 miles, the transmission went completely out, but Mazda was nice enough to replace it free of charge. The 2.0 4cyl. engine is hardly enough to pull the weight of the car. The handling is great... when you finally get to a decent speed. The lack of power is simply emabarassing. Additionally, since shortly after purchase, the engine has idled very low and will shudder violently and at times completely quit, though it starts again as if nothing happened. Mazda has been unable to find a problem but it has not actually gotten any worse. I was contemplating a 2002 626, but the prices are comparable to Accord, Altima, and Camry for much less car. Mazda still hasn''t improved the engine or body style yet expects current mid-size sedan prices.

Strength:

Comfortable, good resale, reliable.

Weakness:

Trunk leaked and sound system not the best.

This car was very reliable and only required a few repairs. I owned it for four and a half years and only had to replace CV boots, battery twice, air intake hose, and radiator. I didn''t mind these repairs since I drove the vehicle until it had 143,000 miles and was 10 years old. I recently sold it and was still able to profit $1,800, even after refinancing it twice. I am scared to get a new car in fear that they "don''t make them like they used to".
