Mazda 626 (1979 - 2002) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The Mazda 626 is a mid-size model that carries the authority of being fully imported from Japan. Built to a high standard, it is frequently reported by its owners to be trouble free for years on end.

The Mazda 626 is offered as a four-door sedan with 2 engine options; a 2.0-liter, 125-hp 4-cylinder or a 2.5-liter, 170-hp V-6. Also choose between a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic. ABS is standard.

The 626 replaced the 616/618 and RX-2 in 1979 and was sold through 2002, when the new Mazda6 took over as Mazda's large family car.

Strength:

Quite nice design.

Weakness:

Lots of space for back passengers, not much for a driver. Back doors longer than front doors.

I bought 1998 Mazada 626 LX just few weeks ago from a dealer who told me they are a "wholesaler". I traded in my Toyota Supra 1989 plus $4700 cash. MILEAGE was 123000 (very high for 3 year old car!) but I checked with lemon reports and no this car doesn't seem to be used as rental car. It drives good so far and no problem except that the "hazard flash" light button gets stuck every time I press on it. I didn't spot a transmission problem on it yet. I hope not! ANY IDEAS WHY a 3 year old car with only one owner (who drove it for 3 years in same southern city) has such a HIGH mileage? Also I must note it accelerates quite slowly and jumping from 1st to 2nd gear is quite rough sometimes.

Strength:

Mad acceleration. Love the antilock brakes-fun to play around with in the snow. Kicked a BMW 325's ass on the interstate doing 135mph. Plenty of room to have packed my friends up and go to Florida for a week.

Weakness:

Will eventually need new clutch do to HARD driving.
Listening to all the complaints from all those who have automatic transmissions.

Bought my 626 May 00. Had missing problems but eventually corrected after changing plugs and fuel filter turns out it was the plug wires $60.00. I have heard the stories of the automatic transmission horrors and am thankfull that I got mine in stick. I had previously owned a 1989 626 non turbo that was a stickshift and loved the car, I put 277,000 miles on it b4 I traded it in on the newer one. My '96 626 came loaded with every option including ABS leather pwr roof. The only thing it didn't have was a spoiler and I had one installed. I absolutly love my car and wouldn't trade it for anything. V6 stickshift is a BLAST!!! I would recommend the one I have to anyone who wants a stick V6. Sorry 'bout the auto trouble get a stick.

Model Reviewed: Mazda 626 - 2.0 litre 4 cylinder

Strength:

Design, space, dashboard, steering wheel, back seat, looks great, drives great, very good speakers, nice factory radio/CD player.

Weakness:

Tires/wheels could be wider, light only on ceiling, outside rear view mirrors to rounded not showing much, inside rear view mirrow to narrow as well. Front space could be bigger/longer and the front doors as well. CD player stops playing some CDs sometimes. My old car (Toyota Supra 1989) was more stable on the road. I get tired of driving this Mazda faster than Supra (seats). No moon/sun/roof. How do I get sap off it?

Great car, nice design, very comfortable, fast/strong enough for a 2.0 litre, great price deal, not bad for a 125,000 mileage car.

Looks almost like Mercedes from rear. Drives like a luxury car. Can't compare, this is my newest car so far. Had BMW 525 before, I liked some features on the BMW, but the BMW was way to slow. I think BMW has to get rid of 2,5 cyl. engines and only install 3,5+ or at least 3 litre. This Mazda 626 could start with 2,5 litre engines for USA and 1.1 litre for Europe heheh :)

Strength:

On 60,000 Engine is working very smoothly
Almost can't hear it
Leather, power sunroof, power windows, etc...

Weakness:

TNANSMISSION- REAR speed is not woking. Shift to rear the car goes forward.
Car doesn't back up intil you reach 1800 RPM.
Very weak, not enought horses.
Leather--hot during the summer, cold during the winter

Economy car, yeah right! Eats gas like a bastard. Fill up the tank, turn around, half of the tank is gone! Sucks! The transmission is the most f**ked up thing in this car! EACH AND EVERY MAZDA HAS TRANSMISSION PROBLMES SOONER OR LATER!
