Mazda 626 (1979 - 2002) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The Mazda 626 is a mid-size model that carries the authority of being fully imported from Japan. Built to a high standard, it is frequently reported by its owners to be trouble free for years on end.

The Mazda 626 is offered as a four-door sedan with 2 engine options; a 2.0-liter, 125-hp 4-cylinder or a 2.5-liter, 170-hp V-6. Also choose between a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic. ABS is standard.

The 626 replaced the 616/618 and RX-2 in 1979 and was sold through 2002, when the new Mazda6 took over as Mazda's large family car.

Strength:

lots of fun, TONS of low end accelration. No maitence required. I have put 8,000 miles on it 4 months. I have had one oil change since i bought it and that is it.

Weakness:

Bad handling on wet surfaces. Not sure if it needs a new suspension or new tires but this thing slides around like crazy in the rain. Once you get used to it it is not a problem and now i look forward to rainy days becuase i like to foll around. No govener. Mos tpeople would not consider this a weakeness but for an autmatic i would like to not have to owrry about peeling out as often. Espially as i mentioned earlier in the rain i have to start it in LOW gear because otherwise my car will just peel out when i push on the gad in DRIVE.

I love this car. It is ALOT of fun. Even though it is automatic i can still do crazy peel-outs. I travel 800-1000 miles a week so the gas milage is a big factor and this baby gets between 30 and 40 mile to the gallon depending on how much fun i decide to have in it. I peel out constantly floor it all the time, do break stands, emergency break stops at high speed, neutral drops and have never had a problem with the tranny or anything. I even drive off road a lot with it at a friend house and at work. I have peeled out many times on dirt/rock even though it is a front wheel drive and the underbelly just takes it. I jsut keep waiting one day to blow the tranny or soemthign minor to go wrong but nothing ever has. This has to baby has taken everything i can throw at it.

none..except for color selections

Weakness:

the whole car

TRASH that's where they should put this car...64000 mi and the transmission is out..the AC is only a cooling system because it takes forever for it to get comfortable. It may be good on gas..save the extra money cause you'll need it to fix the car (there are other cars that are good on gas too..so choose one of them!!) You'll also have to contend with dashboard lights coming on to check engine very frequently.

Strength:

reliable, fun to drive, nice features

Weakness:

not all that great for passing. I often have to go down to third, where the revs can get near the red.

From reading these reviews, here is my conclusion: Do not buy the automatic!! Automatic owners hate their 626's, while standard owners love them. Fortunately, I'm part of the latter category. Other reviewers speak of very high mileage with no maintenance. I agree. Mine has 280 000 km, and has never had any work. The previous owner has an '89 626 (also standard) with 320 000km, also no maintenance. Mine gets 710km (450 miles) on one tank if I set cruise at 70mph. I hope it's not bad luck to talk about how well a car is running, because I'm pretty impressed with this one.

THE TRANSMISSION!!!!! THE TRANSMISSION!!!!! THE TRANSMISSION!!!!!!!!

I HATE MAZDA !!!!!!!! I bought my car in April of 2003. Within one month my transmission went out, Mazda did nothing about it they just sent me to the kennedy transmission, who said it was going to take $2600.00 to rebuild my tranny ! I bought an extended warrenty and I was told it would cover all major repairs when I bought the warranty. But when my tranny went out I had to pay $ 800.00 in repairs. It took three weeks to rebuild my tranny, then the day after I got it back my car broke down again and had to go back to the shop for three more days. Now it has been three months and my tranny has a leak in it. It is in the shop right now. This is the worst car ever !! iCAN BARELY AFFORD MY CAR PAYMENTS I'M FIXING THE POS TO MUCH!!

TRANSMISSION!!!!!! At times, the car maxed out at 40mph and that's after the tranny was replaced. Car seemed to have a mind of it's own, i.e. it runs only when it felt like it wanted to. Air Conditioning was WEAK!!

The car is strong and solid. Good amount of space inside.

Model Reviewed: oldsmobile cutlass supreme FE3

Strength:

2.8 v-6 is even better than it's follow-up the 3.1! Smooth transmission that is geared to perfection! Abundence of interior room Great suspension package! Handles great in all weather(SNOW TOO!)

Weakness:

Too much up-keep is needed to keep the rear disk breaks working (rarely work)

I have had this beast for 4 years and i can't kill it. I bought it with 80,000 mi on it and it now has 175,000 mi. The tranny is still as smooth as it was new. I drive it very hard and very often, but yet it continues to run. This '88 was clearly ahead of it's time with 4 wheel disk breaks, digital dash, power everything, and several other things that we have come to expect of the modern car. Overall I have been pleased with the perfomance of this car. The stiff suspension offers great handeling and cornering. Although the 2.8 v-6 doesn't put out much power, it pushes the mid-sized vehical down the road just fine. Exterior styling is very reserved and the interior provides lots of room and is very comfortable. Too bad oldsmobile had to stop producing the cutlass supreme in '97. I think these quality cars would still sell well in today's market.

Strength:

Bulletproof engine, Has never come close to overheating, Overall trouble-free,

Weakness:

Cassette player is often hesitant to start, Kinda blah styling, Low-beams spontaneously switch to high-beams

Well, it's both pre-Ford (thank God) and a 5 speed (sorry, automatic transmission owners). My 626 is the closest thing to an anvil (essentially unbreakable) I've ever had. It isn't the most passionately styled thing on the road, but it has over 195K mi and still passed our state's emission test first try two weeks ago. Yeah, I had to have the front half-axles, boots, and clutch slave and master cylinders replaced 5000 miles ago, but that was the first major service I'd had done to this car in the six years and 90,000 miles I've had it. I don't baby my cars (other than frequent oil and filter changes) and this gets driven hard (must be the 5-speed). The 2.2L four has enough power and revs smoothly. Compared to my daughter's Honda Prelude, this car is a maintenance-free dream. I have never had a cooling system issue, the AC still blows icy, and the clutch has withstood years of my typical hard launches.

EVERYTHING BETWEEN THE FRONT AND REAR BUMPER!!!! 256,000 MILES AIN'T BAD

Weakness:

IT LOOKED COOL WHEN MY PARENTS BOUGHT IT BUT TIMES HAVE CHANGED. BUT IT STILL ISN'T UGLY. I WISH IT WERE AMERICAN MADE

MY WIFE AND I BOUGHT CAR FROM MY PARENTS 6 YEARS AGO, THEY BOUGHT IT NEW. IT NOW HAS 256,000 MILES ON IT. CLUTCH SLAVE CYLINDER REPLACED AROUND 80,000 REAR STRUTS AT 240,000 NO OTHER MAJOR PROBLEMS. STILL RUNS GOOD BUT NOT QUITE AS STRONG AS IT ONCE WAS. MINOR RUST AROUND REAR WHEEL WELLS. 2.0 GETS AROUND 28 - 34 MPG WITH MIXED CITY/ COUNTRY DRIVING. THIS IS THE BEST CAR THAT I HAVE EVER OWNED WITHOUT A DOUBT. ALTERNATER AND STARTER FAILED ABOUT 2 MONTHS APART AROUND THE 240,000 MILE MARK.
