Mazda 626 (1979 - 2002) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The Mazda 626 is a mid-size model that carries the authority of being fully imported from Japan. Built to a high standard, it is frequently reported by its owners to be trouble free for years on end.

The Mazda 626 is offered as a four-door sedan with 2 engine options; a 2.0-liter, 125-hp 4-cylinder or a 2.5-liter, 170-hp V-6. Also choose between a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic. ABS is standard.

The 626 replaced the 616/618 and RX-2 in 1979 and was sold through 2002, when the new Mazda6 took over as Mazda's large family car.

Strength:

I rides much smoother than compact cars I have driven. My V6 gets around 26 miles per gallon on the highway.

Weakness:

This car will keep you in the service department.

I'm glad to see Mazda is no longer producing this car. I have only owned this car 5 months and it only has 61K miles on it. I have spent over $1000 in engine and transmission repairs this far. I have owned a few Mazdas in the past and never had a problem. The 626 is not a car to buy used! Walk away no matter the price. A lot of used 626s will be previous rental cars, so most likely the engines and transmissions were treated rough.

UH let's see......NONE!

Weakness:

The car, the dealer, and the corporation SUCK!!!!!

I wil NEVER buy or let anyone I know buy a Mazda!!! This is the worst experience I have ever had with a new car. Three transmissions in 18 months, it rolled in park-the shifter, tansmission leak in new one (installed in Jan 02), emergency brake light is always on, and AC has been replaced, what else can I say?

Strength:

Good gas mileage, awesome looks. The leather and sunroof is very nice. What about the oscilating fan? That is a great addition to the features already implimented. I love the looks and the sporty handling.

Weakness:

The four-cylinder engine is a little weak, but doable. Don't like that there is no power door lock button inside.

I absolutely LOVE this car! I was in the market for a nice, luxurius car, leather, sunroof, loaded. I found everything in this car at a great price! I never thought about buying a Mazda, but I couldn't help myself with this car. The 4 cylinder is a little weak, I wish I had had the choice of a V6, but you get what you pay for. So far, no problems (knock on wood), but I try to take it easy so there are none. I hear horror stories about transmissions, but mine seems fine!

AUTO TRANSMISSION. We just lost our fourth. First time at 62,000 miles. Had AAMCO replace and it has gone out every 13-14 months since! It is not at about 155,000 mileage.

Like ride, handling and confomfort. However, I can top all Auto transmission horror stories.

Model Reviewed: Maza 626

Strength:

1) Strong engine - I don't expect we'll need to replace it before 150,000mi. 2) Starts up in negative 40 degree weather. 3) Heater comes up quickly. 4) Averages 36 mi per gallon. 5) If maintained, does not have uber-expensive repairs, ala most American brands.

Weakness:

1) Rattles a lot (hubcaps, front dash, squeaky suspension, etc). 2) Lots of Engine / tire / wind noise at 70mph. 3) Seats are a little uncomfortable on long trips. 4) Stick shift is extremely notchy - almost as bad as Nissan's. 5) Paint is turning a much lighter shade. 6) Radio stinks (bad speakers, worse electronics). 7) Cold Air AC is slow.

Great first car if bought used. Repairs 1) Door (weird wind noise) ~$50. 2) Clutch @ 60,000mi ~$600. 3) Oil leak @ 80,000mi ~$300. 4) Brakes (shoes and rotors) @ 90,000 mi ~$900. 5) Otherwise, just routine maintenance.

I don't know I have only had the car for a week.

Weakness:

Transmission!!! Cupholders are small. Transmission!

I have only had this car a week and the transmission has a leak in it. It will not hold any transmission fluid in it. I thought I was getting a great buy for cheap. I am also a student and cannot afford to get anything else right now but you better believe when I get the money I will get a new car. Do Not Buya Mazda 626.

Strength:

the car is beautiful. it's a smooth ride, it's roomy. the trunk size is wonderful.

Weakness:

the cupholders suck! computer/maybe transmission problem. power windows lack adequate power. spare tire should be standard size. interior apholstry isn't properly mended.

dear lord. bought the car three months ago. 128000 mi on it. it was fine. just had to replace the brakes. check engine light would come on randomly, but other 626 owners told me to ignore this, it's an electrical problem. last weekend i took it to the mountains. halfway up, the o/d off light started flashing. shifting became less than smooth, but entirely tolerable. since then, my transmission is insane. coming out of a stoplight, the car will rev like crazy but the first gear just won't engage until after about 30 secs. it's dangerous and scary. i was driving it only in 2, which worked for a while, but now it does that even in 2. o/d off light won't go away. for the past few hours i've been reading countless horror stories of tranny problems in this very same model. it's depressing. i'm broke and a student, and i can't spend more than i paid for the car, and it's only been four months. lousy. i have heard that this problem is not in fact a tranny problem but a computer problem. i'll find out this week when i take it to the shop and hope not to be ripped off. there is no way i'll take it to the dealership. mazda dealerships are evil.

Good gas mileage when the thing runs.

Weakness:

You name it, it breaks.

Do not buy this car. There are much more reliable brands out there. I've had more trouble with this car than any of the 5 other brands I've owned. My vote is for anything with the word HONDA on it.

Nice to drive around town. A bit of a pain on the highway due to lack of power

Weakness:

Everything rattles, I'm a well known person at the dealership..I'm sure that they love to see me come in!

This car is a real disappointment. I really liked it until I was finished paying the bank to own it. As soon as my bank loan was done...I've started making monthly repair payments to my dealership. This week alone...the Mass Air Flow Sensor $400, Upper strut Mounts ($600) and Power Steering pump, pulley and belt ($600). I've replaced the entire exhaust system, the radiator, two transmissions just to mention a few items from the past year. Plus all of the 'standard' mazda maintenence items.

EVERYTHING

We got the car in 99. Ever since we got this car it has been nothing but a pain for us. We have had the Timing belt replaced 3 times, tensioner sprin replaced twice, head gasket cover replaced 3 times. The battery has been replaced twice. The transmission/transaxle has had repair. Check engine light is always on and the o/d light flashes all the time. I think with all these complaints on the 626's there should be a big law suit agaisnt Mazda. They don't care about the people who complain about these cars they only care about the people who like this car. I will never buy a mazda again and would not recommend this car to anyone.
