Strength:

Reliability. Who could ask for anything better than not one single problem in 30 months? The interior and exterior styling are eye catching.

Weakness:

The drivers door requires a little bit more effort to pull open, but that's a minor issue. The trunk has plenty of room and fits plenty of suitcases, but the exterior styling causes the rear window frame to protrude into the access area of the open trunk. Sometimes can be a pain trying to wiggle a large item around it - not an issue with medium to small things.

This car is excellent and we have not had one single problem with it. In fact, we have not taken it back to the dealer since buyting it even once - have the oil changed and tires rotated elsewhere. We bought this car in December 2000 so have been driving it for almost 30,000 miles and 2 and a half years. The ride is smooth, acceleration great, and the interior is classy. We got the Mach sound system upgrade, and it is well worth it. The sound is awesome.

Strength:

Crash survival. Comfort.

Weakness:

Head gasket. Hard to work on.

If you have cooling problems with this car (blown hoses and water pump) it is probable that you have a bad head gasket. Instead of replacing the gasket, try Gunk Heavy Duty Block Seal. Follow the directions on the container. See www.gunk.com. You can buy it at most WalMarts. I love this car even though you can never get good service from a service garage because the car is so hard to repair. You have to do the service yourself. My first Sable Wagon was a 1988 3L. In four years I had the following problems: 1 Failed alternator .. not Fords fault, the 'no service' battery went dry and killed the alternator. 2 Starter motor .. Hey, it was 12 years old. 3 Water hoses started blowing (replaced 6) and then the water pump .... sound familiar? Instead of repair I used Gunk. When I replaced the anti-freeze I added 500ml of Bardahl Stop Leak. In four years this car cost about $200/yr in repairs and oil changes... that's not bad. A couple of months ago, a young driver in a Toyota crossed the center line and hit us head-on. We walked away with minor injuries (Please use your seat belts) and $3000 in front end damage (bumper and headlights) ... his car was totaled and so was he. Our car still ran (except for a leaking rad.). The car now sits in our back yard for parts and I plan to make a greenhouse and storage out of the shell. I love that car. A week later we were passing a car lot and there sat a 1983 Sable Wagon 3.8L, we got it for $2000. I knew it had a blown head gasket but I had run the last Sable for 15,000 miles on a $10 repair. I tried Gunk again and it is working perfectly. When adding Gunk, use a wood clamp or vise grips to stop the coolent from reaching the interior heater core. Check all fluids once a week (including transmission) and use 'stop leak' power steering fluid. Our replacement Sable has 120,000 miles on it and other than the head gasket it has only minor problems. The power window switches are poor, but they can be interchanged so that the ones from the rear can be used to replace the drivers window controls. I used a paper clip to repair to rear cargo door release. You must have a Chilton's repair book if you own this car. I love this car.

Strength:

the only good thing I can say is it has a lot of room.

Weakness:

transmissions before 1996 are bad. Switches on dash go bad, brakes are a problem, interior falls apart. In four years I have replaced every major part in this car.

I bought this wagon in 1998 and it had 60,000 miles on it then. Six months later I had to replace the transmission to the tune of $2500. I have replaced the motor and had suspension worked on several times. Now my a/c is going out and my radiator sprang a leak. This car has had regular oil changes and it has been taken well care of,however, it has been a huge money sucking aggrivation since I bought it. The interior falls apart easily and the windshield wiper motor on the back window died right along with the switch inside the car. Why didn't I sell it, well that is what happens when you don't have the money all at once to buy something better. I would never buy this kind of vehicle again.

Strength:

The huge interior, which seats 8. The V6 is not bad, and its very comfortable.

Weakness:

Cheap plastic interior that falls apart.

I have a '95 Mercury Sable GS wagon. I bought it used, but it is still a pretty good car. It is perfect if you have a big family, but you don't want a van or SUV. It has the 3rd row seat and the maximum capacity for seating is 8! I have had some problems with it though. It could be from the previous owner. The problems have mostly been with things breaking in the interior. The inside drivers door handle broke and when we fixed it, the door soon stopped opening again. Also, the cupholders broke and there is some rust. Besides those problems, it has been a good car. The biggest thing I would suggest is to get a '96 model instead of the '95, because the '95 is pretty much hideous.

Strength:

Even with a loose drivers side door, no AC, warped(at the factory I think, because my tauri were the same) brake rotors, and what I optomistically call a traction/motion control automatic transmission, the thing has great heat, is almost impervious to anything my kids can do to it, and has the cool rear facing flip up 3rd row seat. Can leave it unlocked anywhere. ponderously large, making it pretty safe for totin' kids. The fact that if I'm still driving this when my girls are older I will NEVER be asked to take them or their friends anywhere! Still better than a minivan!

Weakness:

It's paid for, which means my cheap self won't buy a new car til forced. It has never gotten less than 22mpg, and on the hgwy has gotten as high as 30, which forces me to not even consider cars with lower mph! Huge amount of cargo space. How could you ever look at another car with less after this!

2nd kid was on the way and we needed a family cruiser. I've owned 2 tauri before, so I knew what I was in for...bad transmission and brakes at the least, but I lucked out and got mystery warning lights too(better check that engine soon, that lights been on for 2 years)! In the past year I've quit wanting to drive this beast, and refuse to repair anything more, alas, the beast won't die! This is my final hope, by proclaiming the strenghts I'm hoping to jinx myself.

Strength:

Great stereo, decent acceleration, distinctive styling, safe, re3liable and parts are cheap (relative to Japanese and German cars).

Weakness:

Noisy and unrefined.

A reasonable vehicle if you are willing to accept its shortcomings. The car performs competently so long as you don't push it too hard. Mine has the 24v engine and 4-wheel disc brakes. The ABS works great in snow and you can start off in 2nd gear to help pulling out into traffic when its icy. The shortcomings are typical in all Taurus/Sables (I've owned a 1990 and 1991 each with over 100K miles and no major problems, and a 2000 that I bought new with similar experiences). These defiencies include, flimsy controls, horrible noise levels at speed and dismal gas mileage, given their weight and engine output. On the positive side, if you buy a good one and take care of it you should get many miles of trouble-free service. I bought this one for my 17 year old to use to go to high school and college. I have no concerns that the car will do what it suppose to.

Strength:

Nice powerfull car

Weakness:

Heard that domestic cars go to recall or body shops more often than foreign brands of the same class

I bought an used Mercury Sable 98' just a month ago. The car was running absolutely well but a week later appeared Engine service soon light on the dash. Car mechanic told me that there is no big problem. This is an error of computer programming. Next week the car didn't start. When I turn the ignition key to the position ON it shows all the lights on. But the problem is when I turn the key to the start position it responds like dead. The most surprisingly thing is when I take the key out of the ignition the lights on the dash still ON. Then I towed to the mechanic and the result was the mecanic gave up but he found out where the problem is and suggested me to tow to official dealer which is quite expensive. There's a bad short of electrical wires. Is there someone who had or has such a problem with Mercury Sable? My only experience riding a domestic cars tells me not to buy American cars.

Reliable

Strength:

The fit and finish was perfect and held up well. Exterior shines like new-excellent metallic paint job. No rust. Interior is good quality. Everything works fine except the door locks recently started acting up. Still running with the original engine, transmission, muffler, radiator and water pump.

Weakness:

Brakes have been the problem on this car. Anti locks gave up at 100,000 (did not get them repaired)Do to age the rack and pinion needs work, heater core just went, and muffler needs to be replaced.

Original owner, car now has 122,000 miles and is over 10 yrs old. It has the 3.8L engine and most options. The engine is still peppy and alway starts right up. It has been a reliable car. I love this car. It has had regular oil changes, trans service and has been garaged.

Strength:

Throughout all the bad there are 2 things that I think were nice about this car, one is the heat was great, and the other was the steering was wonderful.

Well I thought this car was a piece of junk. When I got it I bought it from my step mom, and the back drivers side window wouldn't go down, the air conditioning didn't work, the sealing was coming off the doors, the passenger side window wouldn't go up all the way, and the seat wouldn't go back all the way. Then about a month later, my power steering pump blew and I had to replace it. From then til now, the oxygen sensor has gone out, and the gear indicator is off, it's got a power steering fluid leak and an oil leak, plus about 2 weeks ago the transmission blew. So overall this car was a major disappointment and I wouldn't recomend buying one.
